RE: [LegacyUG] Same event for many people - SOLVED

2012-09-16 Thread Jan Roberts
Only problem with using the repeat button (which I had noticed but never used
before, so I have learnt something) is that it doesn't copy the source. By
using the copy icon (two paper pages) and then the paste icon (clipboard with
paper on it) on the new person's event screen you can repeat the whole lot with
ONE click, source, notes and all.

Cheers
Jan

Thanks for your replies.

They did not seem to answer my question, but when checking your answers out, I
found the REPEAT button inside EVENTS/FACTS. It works beautifully.
Just type the data in for the first person and click click ... REPEAT for the
rest.

Strange I couldn't find reference
to it in the handbook for EVENTS/FACTS,
but it is mentioned in ADDING AN ADDRESS.

Thanks again for pushing me in the
right direction.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same event for many people - SOLVED

2012-09-16 Thread Jan Roberts
If you go to Events in the Help file in the program this is what you see -
Using the Event Clipboard

To copy an Event to the clipboard:

 1. Click the button. [shows the copy icon - removed because this is in plain
text]

To paste an Event from the clipboard to a list:

 1. Open the Add Event window for the person or marriage you want to add the
event to.
 2. Click the button. [shows the paste button - removed because this is in
plaint text]

I doubt you could get much plainer than that.

There are many easy to use features in Legacy (and other programs) it is too
bad that help menus are rarely written in plain language that doesn't require
learning a totally new tongue to find something.
Most helps don't help unless you already know what to look for. One of my pet

Re: [LegacyUG] Same event for many people - SOLVED

2012-09-16 Thread Ron Bernier
Using a help file requires using some logical thinking. The OP was
questioning how to use the same event for multiple people. When
searching the help file, you need to ask yourself what are you trying
to accomplish - in this case, the OP wanted to enter the same "event"
information for multiple people. You would first search for the main
"topic" EVENT. Once you find the section for event, you then need to
read through the various sub topics until you locate the information
you are seeking. In this case you would read about copying and
pasting events by using the event clipboard.

As I previously stated it is virtually impossible for anyone to write
a help file based on how people think, because everybody thinks
differently. If people would take some time and carefully search the
help file, you can usually locate what you are looking for.
Unfortunately, too often people don't want to take the time and effort
required to carefully search the help file.

Re: [LegacyUG] attachements, plain text

2012-09-16 Thread Ron Bernier
Lloyd,
It doesn't happen with RootsWeb. Attachments are blocked and the
email is rejected. If a message is not plain text, the RootsWeb
server attempts to strip out the HTML code and then "posts" the plain
text. If the message can't be scrubbed it is rejected. A very simple
solution.

You have to remember, RootsWeb lists are a convenience for people to
communicate. RootsWeb isn't concerned about insulting anyone for
rejecting the person's email. On the other hand, the Legacy list
serves two purposes - first, it allows users to exchange ideas.
Second, it is also used for users (customers) to communicate with
support via the list. Unfortunately Millennia doesn't want to offend
customers by having email rejected, so the have made a conscious
decision to use email software that cannot be configured to block
attachments and HTML messages.

I agree: This is a list and lists have rules, just follow the rules!

-Original Message-
Unfortunately this is a discussion that arises on a fairly regular basis. Two
main issues with HTML and attachements is the fact that this is an
international list and there are still many subscribers who access the internet
via dialup (for some there is no choice, for others it is a financial
situation). Second, it is a well known fact that HTML and attachments have the
potential for harboring a virus "hidden"
within the message. Although the majority of us do have excellent anti-virus
software installed on our computers, we should not be "forced" to have to put
our anti-virus software to the test.
Unfortunately, every time this discussion arises, there are certain individuals
who basically respond that they will post in whatever format that they choose
to post in and they display a total lack of concern/regard for everyone else on
the list.

Re: [LegacyUG] attachements, plain text

2012-09-16 Thread Jackie King
Let me make it very easy because I used to be on the other end -

There are still some 19 million Internet users (recent survey) in the
United States that cannot get high speed internet access. For them,
attachments can be a real pain. I remember one night on another list
waiting almost a half hour for a message with an attachment to download
- and of course, on my service, I had no other way to get to other
messages until that downloaded. For many its not just a matter of what
we would like to see.

For some it is also a matter of fees - there are some people who still
get charged for the amount of bandwidth downloaded. For them it can be a
pocketbooks issue. It's not a matter of trying to exclude likes - it is
a matter of trying to include folks.

I now have my high-speed, but only because I moved.

Use the Copy and Paste buttons on the Event screen. They're under the
Help button on the right. You don't have to put your cursor anywhere.
Enter the information for one person as you want it. Then click the Copy
button. Go to the each of the other people one at a time, open to that
same window and click the Paste button.

Michelle,

Legacy support has always maintained that there software cannot block
attachments. They always relied on users to refrain from sending
attachments and/or HTML messages. Finally thy gave up on saying no
HTML because some users simply refused to follow the guidelines. At
least, they haven't caved on attachments even though some users ignore
that also. It would be really nice if they would look into software
that can block/reject messages sent to the list in HTML and/or
attachments, but it doesn't look like that will ever happen.

I would suggest the new iPad, with the Families app for your Legacy program and
the Scanner Pro app to scan any and all documents. Plus it has a nice camera
for pictures. I find it this combination great for researching away from home
and so much better than a laptop or anything else out there. Enjoy your trip.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Sources added when addding to do item

2012-09-16 Thread Thomas Ramey
Thanks Russ:
I understand that is the way it is designed to work but was hoping for a
select button or a work around. In my way of thinking, it just seems to me
that it is inappropriate to add a master source when no source has been
tied to a fact or event. Its not a major problem, just woks different than
I wanted it to. Still learning the more advanced fetures. Tom

Single click then 'save', not open. Save it to somewhere you will remember.
Then follow the instructions in the options.

PLEASE do NOT send attachments or inline images to the LUG List. This is a
strict No-No!

We have many listers who are on limited internet access or on dial-up and this
can eat up their bandwidth or be very slow for them to download. Many of our
best helpers on the LUG list refuse to open emails that are in HTML or contain
attachments or inline graphics for the reason of safe computing - those types
of emails can harbor viruses.

I strongly suggest that you review the Legacy User Group Guidelines at

Re: [LegacyUG] Can not open legacy

2012-09-16 Thread Sherry/Support
Please turn off your return receipt request when you post to the LUG list.

The solution to these error messages can be found on our website
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Help Center > Technical Support.

The first one you mentioned is under Solutions by Error Description >
Download and Installation Problems > • The Message File record # 12601
was not found The Message File record#12655 was not found
etc., etc.

The second one is under Solutions by Error Number > Error 380.

2012-09-16 Thread Sherry/Support
Alwyn has a legit question about an error message.

A lot of people use return receipt for various reasons - it's just so
they know you got their email - and don't think to turn it off when
posting to a group.

I don't know whether this is genuine or a spammer. I do know that this user
requested a read receipt.
Is this a way to collect email addresses?
