There are other things I would rather have the programmers working on.

Hi Tony and Greetings from Melbourne, Australia.

I can think of quite a few other applications for your idea.
For instance some census records give the place of employment (e.g. "banksman at
Whitworth Colliery") so it would be useful in this way.
Could it also be used where a person, for example, is appointed to a position
and later resigns so we want to record those different dates?

Or a person may have different positions (e.g. secretary, president etc) at
different times in one organization.
In addition some business people have two entries in directories - one for the
business and one for the residence.
At the moment I have all these examples recorded as multiple (messy) events so I
like the idea.

Lots of luck Tony. Many months ago I suggested the addition of additional
variables for the customized internet search. Specifically, the addition of
City, County and State along with some spouse information. Currently only
variations of the current person's name, birth date and death date are
available. I haven't heard one peep from anyone since I made the suggestion.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Event sentence redesign

I have just found a school admission register for one of my cousins.
This gives the school to which she was admitted and her home address.
Now I'm a lumper as far as event sentences are concerned and I don't like
having multiple Legacy events describing one physical event. With the current
event sentence structure, we can only have one location in a sentence, so I can
either use the home address or the school address, but not both.

Also, with the current scheme, we have to build 8 sentences, depending on which
fields are filled. Adding one extra possibility into the current scheme would
mean 16 sentences and two more would mean 32, which would be silly.

I have designed a completely new approach to building event sentences, which
means you can have as many variables as you want in just one sentence. If you
need 2 dates, 3 addresses and 4 narrative fields, that's fine. You can even do
simple logic, such as describing a child as "baby" up to 3 months, "infant"
from 3-12 months and "child" above 12 months.

Now this is a complete rewrite of the event sentence area of Legacy and they
won't touch it unless there is a perceived demand. If I'm the only one who
would like this, so be it. However, if there is sufficient support from this
list, I'll go to the next stage and send it in as a request.

So, what does everyone think?

Tony

I like it when people leave the actual 'thread' so I can see what was said

footer/signature line that duplicates itself with each post but even that
gets too long with more than 3-4 comments. I'm removing just the

[LegacyUG] Event sentence redesign

2012-10-25 Thread Tony Rolfe
I have just found a school admission register for one of my cousins.
This gives the school to which she was admitted and her home address.
Now I'm a lumper as far as event sentences are concerned and I don't
like having multiple Legacy events describing one physical event. With
the current event sentence structure, we can only have one location in a
sentence, so I can either use the home address or the school address,
but not both.

Also, with the current scheme, we have to build 8 sentences, depending
on which fields are filled. Adding one extra possibility into the
current scheme would mean 16 sentences and two more would mean 32, which
would be silly.

I have designed a completely new approach to building event sentences,
which means you can have as many variables as you want in just one
sentence. If you need 2 dates, 3 addresses and 4 narrative fields,
that's fine. You can even do simple logic, such as describing a child
as "baby" up to 3 months, "infant" from 3-12 months and "child" above 12
months.

Now this is a complete rewrite of the event sentence area of Legacy and
they won't touch it unless there is a perceived demand. If I'm the only
one who would like this, so be it. However, if there is sufficient
support from this list, I'll go to the next stage and send it in as a
request.

So, what does everyone think?

Thank you Brian. What I need is an editable table not graphic lines. But
good news. I think I have a method

And it works!!

I would also work with ms word but I'm better at the wordpertect macro

Hi all,

I rejoined this group a couple of months ago but haven't been getting
any emails. Hopefully this will reach you.

After the Civil War webinar yesterday I became interested in that
period. Isn't there a way to search L.F.T. for persons that would be of
a given age range in a given time frame? As an example perhaps, 18-40
in 1862.

Thanks very much,

Russ, I am sure you just over looked it, but the two characters are
actually three

--Space here. You need three characters. I see a lot of users use TBird
which puts them in correctly. Just highlight what you want to, then hit
reply, and Bingo, or put it at the end of the post like Russ did.

I agree all it takes to have them trimmed is to add these two characters --
before your signature line and most of the work is done for you and then you
just have to be diligent in trimming the rest of them out of users replies.
But lets not get to trim happy and trim out the pertinent messages so you

Re: [LegacyUG] Ipad App for legacy

2012-10-25 Thread MJ SA
Thanks everyone. As you may have guessed I have some disabilities and
I do need something very light weight. Although i have had legacy for
a few years, I don't know how to use the program so well. Than my
laptop crashed 2 nights ago. Thankfully, I backed up my family tree
on a thumb drive.

I get so confused with all these computers. I wonder if the ULTRABOOK
that I plan to buy tomorrow with Windows 8 will have enough memory/gig
etc to run Legacy, my Itunes, hold all my pictures, documents.

So if anyone wants to suggest a good ULTRABOOK for me, I would greatly
appreciate it. I would wait to get the new IPAD, but I will be on bed
rest after a surgery on November 5th and does everyone really want me
to ask a million questions on how to run FAMILIES :)

2012-10-25 Thread Bill Wilson
I use the Families app on my IPad and iPhone. It works great for being able
to take your family with you wherever you go. All my pictures and documents
and events transfer from the PC to both devices. Everything seems to be
there which is great. As a personal preference I consider my PC as the gold
standard for my family data so as a personal preferenceI never transfer
from my moblie devices to my PC. Also, the functions for maintaing, adding
and deleting information using the Families app is seriousely lacking when
you compare it to Legacy on the PC. I would definitely not recommend
Families as your primary database.

RE: [LegacyUG] Ipad App for legacy

2012-10-25 Thread Paul Gray
The OP needs, if I read the post correctly, a computer to run Legacy. For that,
one needs a desktop / laptop /netbook / ultrabook. Legacy will not run on any
tablet computer that I am aware of.

It appears from a post yesterday by Paul Brodsky that Legacy runs fine on
Windows 8 “full version – i.e. not RT), so it is immaterial (regarding Legacy)
whether the OP gets a new computer with Win 7 or Win 8. I bet there are still
lots of Win 7 computers available with no cost or low cost Win 8 upgrades. Best
of both worlds – start with the known Win 7 and upgrade to Win 8 only if it
proves out to be a good product.

Families is a wonderful product, but it is not a full featured product like
Legacy (e.g. little or no reporting). I use it on a tablet and consider it to
be a great companion product to Legacy, great for carting around my data while
travelling. But, if one has a nice light laptop or ultrabook, I'm not sure
there is any need for an Ipad or other tablet.
