[LegacyUG] Unused Surnames

2013-01-06 Thread M. Brenzel
I am trying to find surnames in my database that are not being used.

If I don't know the maiden name of a woman, I enter her surname as [[Smith,
wife of John]]. Once I find her maiden name, I update her record
accordingly but I know that I may not have gone back to the Master Surname
List and deleted the temporary name. I would like to clean them up now.

If I run the Surname Summary list, these surnames don't show up in the list
and I suspect that they might be included in No Surname.

If I open the database in Access and look at tblNR, I see that there is a
column for Used. I thought that those not used would have Used = 0 but
this is not the case. Some of the ones that are used also have Used = 0.

Can anyone provide some insight into this?

Thank you!

Mary

could do a series of individual reports, one for each child, but that seems
a paper waste. Thanks for any hints.

Tag the children of the chosen couple with an unused tag and then do a
Search for Individuals with that tag number.

When the Search results open in the Name List select Print and then
choose the fields and the layout that you want.

 Hello Jane

I would tag the children (e.g. tag 9). Then Search for Individuals tagged
 9. Click on Print at bottom of screen. Select from Options what I would
like to appear in report. Click on preview. If happy with result. Click
 Print all pages.

2013-01-06 Thread M. Brenzel
Thanks, Jenny! I didn't look far enough down in the Options list to see that
command.

I'd still like to know why the Used flag in tblNR is 0 when the surname is in
fact used. This is contrary to the Y/N bit (1=true, 0=false).

Re: [LegacyUG] Blank e-mails [blocked due to bad URL]

2013-01-06 Thread Ward Walker
I did think of that before, but then I expected my Vipre Antivirus program
to tell me that it has found a bad e-mail, or that it has replaced suspected
content with a message saying so. However, prompted by your note, I looked
further. Sure enough, the Vipre history log does list the messages that had
appeared with blank content! These e-mails are listed as Quarantined, and
the risk is shown as Blocked URL. Inspection of the details further shows
that the offending URL is http: //www. jgen. ws/ jlog/. (spaces inserted by
me.)

This URL is the same domain as JLB's e-mail address. I have no idea why
Vipre decided to block it. Further, I am not happy that Vipre removed the
entire message body, rather than just replacing the URL with a message. I'll
have to look to see if there is a setting that I can tweak.

The LUG e-mails from JLB (and some, but not all, of the replies to those
e-mails) are showing up with blank message bodies in my e-mail client. Even
the Legacy footer is missing. (See below.) If I go to web mail or iPhone,
the same messages are not blank. My client is Windows Live Mail on Windows
7. Is anyone else experiencing this?

[LegacyUG] Adopted child

2013-01-06 Thread Tony Rolfe
This is my first time facing this particular problem, so I want to get
it right. How should I record this person?

He appears in 1881 as Percy Turner, born abt 1876 in Fletching, Sussex.
He is shown as a nephew of George Lay and Hannah nee Langridge.

Hannah's parents were George Langridge and Harriet Turner, so it seems
likely that Percy was the grandchild of one of Harriet's siblings.
Unfortunately, I don't have any of her siblings recorded.

By 1891, he is still with George and Hannah and is recorded as their
adopted nephew Percy T. Lay (known as). Presumably the T is for Turner.

I've searched for his baptism without success, but I appear to have his
birth from FreeBMD. Even if I get his birth certificate, and find his
parents, they almost certainly won't be in my database.

So, should I record him as a child of George and Hannah, even knowing he
isn't theirs?

What is the best way to deal with this?

Thanks in advance

Tony

In children's settings there is a drop down screen that you can make note of
this. Relationship to Father and Relationship to Mother. The down arrow gives
different suggestions, one is adopted.
