Re: [LegacyUG] File cleanup

2013-08-02 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Bob,

You could make a copy of your file and work on that - so that if it all
turns to custard, or you decide a different approach might be better,
you can start again without any permanent harm to your original file.
In fact, I'd work on a copy anyway if you're handling a major task like
that. And do a backup before starting - cover all your bases! :-)

Along the same lines, you can copy your Legacy file to a flash drive, or
a CD, or to a Dropbox folder (or other cloud storage service) to share
with someone else who can help you. Note the word copy - keep your
original safe until it's all over.

And don't go making any further data entries to it while the work is
going on, 'cos you'll only have to repeat it when the repairs are completed.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

It is a common problem, but I think that it is one that Millennia should
seriously consider providing an optional workaround. Information will be lost.
Legacy should include an option on export to unlink the shared events into
separate, standard events in the GEDCOM. By not doing so, it forces Legacy
users to consider avoiding this new feature if we ever expect to share data
with relatives who do not use Legacy.

I see this as similar to the problem with SourceWriter sources. Legacy should
have an option to reformat the source citation so that it makes sense when
converted into a Basic source in the GEDCOM.

In general, proprietary features are great, as long as there is always an
optional way to mash them into the current, inadequate GEDCOM standard.

Legacy will export the information to share the event but, as with any
non-standard GEDCOM feature, we use custom GEDCOM tags for that data.

Legacy 8 will re-import the shared events correctly but programs that do not
support shared events and possibly even those that do but which do not
correctly interpret the custom tags from Legacy will not know how to import
that shared event data.

This is a common problem when programs have features which are not supported by

Of course they won't!

As a standard, GEDCOM is moribund. Consequently, any developer that adds new
features to their software will be inherently unable to transfer those features
to other software (or web sites) via GEDCOM - not that they would wish to :-)

What people actually need is an independent developer to produce a program that
can read one native database and produce another, native database. Even then,
there's no guarantee that moving from Legacy to anything else will preserve any
proprietary structures or data.

Les,

Suppress details for living is just that, and a picture is a detail.
They will not print with suppress details turned on.

The jpg vs jpeg question, is so far as I know an issue with people who
use web pages and want their files on their web server named with the
*.jpeg extension (a legal form for the file name) instead of *.jpg.
Legacy converts all images used on web pages to the Joint Photographic
Engineering Group (JPEG) format from all other formats such as tiff, bmp
etc. that are recognized in Legacy. It then stores that converted file
with the .jpg extension in the web page project pictures folder and all
webpages link to that copy of the file. If a user has linked a *.jpeg
file to someone then that file is copied to the web page folder and
renamed .jpg.

The tiff issue is related more to the overall size of a tiff file versus
the more compact formats such as jpeg. With a lot of tiff images linked
to your file the need to process and display those large images can
cause performance problems. The same issue can arise with any bitmap
non-compressed format such as bmp as well. For normal use in Legacy we
usually recommend making a copy of your image file as a jpeg format
which is much smaller and has more than adequate quality for printing in
reports and display on your monitor.

Re: [LegacyUG] File cleanup

2013-08-02 Thread Leslie Jackson
Hello Bob,
Speaking from a PC point of view using Windows; Yes you can make a backup copy
of your file(s) on a flash/thumb drive.
The steps to accomplish this are:

1. Insert thumb drive and make note of the drive letter assigned by Windows.
2. Open Legacy, or switch to Legacy if it is already open. Click on File
(upper left) in the Legacy window.
3. Dropdown menu will appear and choose Backup Family File
4. Window will open named Customize Backup.
5. Click the rectangle box labled Select Name and Location for Data Backup.
6. Scroll down in the left lower window to find the drive letter from step #1
(E:) or (F:). Click on the letter that was assigned in step #1.
7. Click Save. This will close the explorer window and take you back to the
Customize Backup window for Legacy.
8. The Drive letter assigned in step #1 will now be below the box labled
Select name and Location for Data Backup.
9. Click Backup and Legacy will let you know when it is through.
10. Be certain to eject the Flash/thumb drive properly so you don't damage
the drive and possibly lose information. (see instructions with your drive)

With the backup stored on the flash/thumb drive, you can now proceed with the
repair database or the procedure of choice from the manual to correct/cleanup
your data. When you attempt to repair or Cleanup your data, Legacy will ALWAYS
ASK you to backup your data before beginning. That way, if it doesn't work the
way you like you can restore your data using the Thumb/Flash drive or one of
the backups on your hard drive from C:/Legacy.
Be not afraid, Trust the technology!

[LegacyUG] LEGACY ON TWO HOME COMPUTERS

2013-08-02 Thread Bob Joyce Tuxford
Can I set up a home situation where I have Legacy installed on both my
desktop and laptop computers so that the two computers can be used at the
same time for Legacy data entry, but the Legacy data being entered into both
goes into one master Legacy programme? If so, how do I go about it?
Both computers are home-networked.

Re: [LegacyUG] LEGACY ON TWO HOME COMPUTERS

2013-08-02 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Joyce,

Can I set up a home situation where I have Legacy installed on both my
desktop and laptop computers...

Yes you can do that, but...

...so that the two computers can be used at the same time for Legacy
data entry, but the Legacy data being entered into both goes into one
“master” Legacy programme?

No, you can't do that.

Your Legacy database can be open on only one computer at a time.

You can put the Legacy file into a folder that is shared with another
computer via cloud storage (such as Dropbox), so that when you open the
file on either computer (assuming it's closed on the other computer) you
are opening the current and up-to-date file.

You might also like to look into intellishare in the Help files - if
you're wanting to collaborate with another person, that might fit your
needs.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] MERGING 2 GEDCOMS

2013-08-02 Thread les-williamson

A nice feature that I use is from the “Tools” section “Compare Two Files For
Duplicates”. This allows you to view potential duplicates in your own file and
your wife’s, and tag the ones that you would wish to merge. The simplest way
(assuming that you are not using these tag numbers already) is to use the
number “1” tag on one file and the number “2” tag on the other file.
You then import the “wife’s” file into yours, find the tagged individuals and
manually merge them. Most often when you merge one duplicate Legacy will
automatically switch to duplicates mode and find other potential duplicates,
usually your tagged persons.
When you have finished merging, go to the names list, click on the “Search” box
at the bottom of the list, choose the “Show All Tagged Tag 1 Individuals”.
The list should now show all these individuals with both tags “1” “2”. Any
individuals that only have only tag”1” still require to be merged with their
tagged “2” duplicate.

Sam,

Let's give you the correct terms for what you want to do so it'll be easier to
find the instructions in the Help file.-

You *import* one file into another and then *merge* the duplicates.

If you look up Import and Merge in the Help index, you'll find great
instructions for doing both of those processes.

Sherry

The instructions in the help file are very confusing.
What I want to do is merge my wife's to mine to get one big file to look at.
We have few common ancestors and I would like to see who they are.
What is a simple way to merge them?
I have them in a split screen but can find no menue to merge them together.
