Re: [LegacyUG] Version 8

2013-08-12 Thread Tony Rolfe
Hi, Wendy

That is strange. I have just gone back 3 pages in the archive and
neither my original nor this second attempt appears there. I did have
an earlier thread "V8 Shared events" which does appear there, but this
one - nothing.

However, I've just looked "By Date" and both are there. "By Thread"
neither are there. How odd!

Thanks for getting in touch

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony,

I'm sending this reply both directly to you and to the list, to ensure
you see it.

Several people responded to your original post - my email service shows
14 emails in that thread.

You might like to check the list's archive for them. :-)

Kind Regards,

[LegacyUG] Version 8

2013-08-12 Thread Tony Rolfe
I sent this to the list a week ago and it didn't appear, so I thought
I'd try again...

All the features that have appeared in "Legacy 8 Revealed" articles are
interesting and nice-to-have. The tagging options and the instant
duplicate checking alone will be worth the upgrade for me.

However, I was wondering whether Legacy 8 will attack the fundamental
problems with Legacy 7? Specifically the requirement for non-standard
installation, the use of old-fashioned file requesters and the inability
to have more than one window active at a time. These have dragged on
ever since I first used Legacy 4 and now the new programming environment
is being used I'm hoping that these issues will disappear.

The other thing I'm hoping to hear is that locations have become
time-sensitive, so we can keep track of how towns have moved from county
to county, countries have changed name etc.

Here's hoping

Re: [LegacyUG] File ID numbers ( & CLOOZ question)

2013-08-12 Thread MVMcgrs
I don't know if it will integrate with each other. I keep each as a
separate program. I also use the KISS principal and label my documents Birth
001,
Birth 002; Death 001; Military 001; Nat 001 etc. I don't have a wide
variety of categories. Obits, tombstone info, death notices all go under
Death.

Same with births, baptisms, birth announcements, newspaper announcements
that deal with Birth get listed under Births.

The number goes in the Legacy File ID number. I enter the document in
Clooz, give it a category and number, link people to the document and fill in
the detail screen or not. The program does much more than I use it for. I
just want to keep track of the documents I've already got copies of. Then I
know if the info came from an index I know I need the actual document.

Thanks, Ron. Are Crown Dependencies categorically different
from a Protectorate? Or can I use the analogy?

Cheryl

Cheryl,

Apologies for the slight delay in coming back to you - I have been away for
a few days.

As I understand it a Protectorate is rather different in that the
relationship between the state and the mother country is much closer, with
the mother country exercising some degree of control over the state. Whereas
with the Crown Dependencies GB only takes responsibility for their defence,
or to be more general their foreign policy. For example, the CI and IoM are
not constituent states of the European Community, but are associated through
their relationship with the UK.

Very true.
I think I will go for the CD as the main entry, and then reference the specific
Gazette from within the citation, that way I have just one master source for
the 20+ citations

(G) As the editor is famous for saying -- I don't need it
GOOD, I need it NOW! (g)

There are so many ways to cite something, someone will
always think you're wrong. I must have had 30 or 40
different style sheets, and none of them agreed on much of
anything, by the time my son got out of high school.

How about Books>Book, edited (Reprint)>Edited by an agency>CD/DVD book
(images)?

There are various alternatives you can select if that doesn't exactly
suit. For example, Authored rather than Edited.

I don't think you need get *too* hung up on getting exactly the right
template according to what it's titled or what the fields are named. As
long as you are able to include the information you think is important,
that's what counts. And remember, you don't *have* to enter information
in a field just because it (the field) is there.

Thanks Marie,
After looking at that site, I think I'll stick with my own method - I'd get

You don't need to change your choice in Options if you only want to add
one Source in Basic style.

When you click on Add Source, the first option in the list on the left
is "*Add a Basic Style Source" and clicking on that takes you straight
into the Basic Source screen, rather than through all the selections for
a SW template.
