May I ask whether you consider that given the above Legacy should advise its

[LegacyUG] Printing problem

2014-01-05 Thread Jenny M Benson
I am visiting a couple of church graveyards to-morrow and want to take a
list of the people whose graves i am looking for, so I created a Search
list and attempted to print it. It is printing with white text, so
alternate sections on a pale background are almost unreadable and
alternate sections on a white background are totally unreadable! It looks
perfectly normal in Preview.

I am staying with a relative and using the standard version of Legacy 8 so
can't create a PDF to carry with me on my tablet. Phooey!

Is this more likely a Legacy problem or a problem with this laptop/printer

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing problem

Jenny,

I use a free program called CutePDFWriter which installs as a printer
driver so you can choose that as your printer on the report form then
select print and it will create a PDF file which you save then print using
your real printer.

http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

Just be aware it will offer to install the Ask toolbar so deselect that
checkbox before beginning the install.

I think there are others but this is the one I have always used and it
seems to work well.

[LegacyUG] Attaching a picture

2014-01-05 Thread Jo Poi
I'm curious to find ot why.
If I go to Picture Centre and complete details on the picture of
Caption/Date/Description.
When I attach to any person from the Picture Centre the
Caption/Date/Description all appear with the picture.
But when I attach the same picture via the individual's information to
for eg, an event or marriage picture or baptism picture, the
Caption/Date/Description do not appear.
As the 2nd method is a lot quicker/easier its natural to go this way,
until I realise it is not the way to go.
Why is it necessary to use the long way round ?

The ones that do, only provide that information to a select few users, such as

Re: [LegacyUG] New computer: what order to do these?

2014-01-05 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Dee,

Installing the programs
---

You want both v7 and v8 on your computer, so go ahead and install the
two programs onto your new computer.

For each version, download the installation files from the Legacy web
site and run them to install them properly - don't try to copy the
program from one computer to another, that won't work.

Download v8 from http://legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp and v7
from http://legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion7.asp#7

For each of them, once the file is downloaded, locate that file (in your
Downloads folder), and double-click on it to run the installation. This
installs the program onto your computer.

Copying the data files
--

Then you need to decide how you're going to manage the two sets of data
files. The v8 data file, once you've opened it in v8 and it's converted
to the new format, will not open in v7, so you need to take a little
care to ensure you don't loose the v7 file in the process.

On my computer, I've set up two folders, one for Legacy v7 data, the
other for Legacy v8 data. If you do the same, copy the v7 data files
you have now to both folders - at this point, before doing anything
else, you have two sets of identical copies of your data files.

Don't forget to also copy the ancilliary files if you have them - the
files with the same name but end in .TC, .RGD and so on - to retain your
previous customisations.

You might want to give the v8 files a different name so you don't
confuse them, even if it's just slightly different by adding v8 to the
end of the filename.

(I discovered by chance the other day that if you select all the various
files with the same filename (the name of your data file) in Windows
Explorer, then press F2 to edit the name and change the one filename
that it offers, all the highlighted files will be altered - it's a quick
way of updating when you're going through this exercise.)

Opening the data files in their respective programs
---

The v7 data file is ready to be opened in Legacy v7.

In v8, open the data file in the v8 folder - you will be asked how you
want it handled. There are three choices:

-- Copy my family file to the My Documents folder, convert it to the
new format, and open it

-- Make a backup of my family file before converting it and then open
it where it is

-- Just convert my family file and open it

You've already taken steps to protect the original data (by making a
copy for v8), so select the third option and let Legacy do its work
converting the file to the new structure.

Note that you don't have to put the data file under the My Documents
folder, though it is the default. But it's a good idea to put it there,
unless you've got your own filing system that you know how to manage
adequately (ie backups, etc).

Remember also that any changes you make in one file won't automatically
update in the other. You may like to label one data file as a test, so
you don't confuse which one is the current, working file.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

New computer, Windows7. Advice, please: In what order should these be
 done?

 * Load Legacy7, standard, from flash drive. (Flash drive has two
separate families, which I'd like to keep separate for now.) I do want
to have both Legacy7 and Legacy8 on this computer.

*Load Legacy8 software, standard, from website.

*Load the INFORMATION from Legacy7 into the Legacy8 software.

Thanks for sharing your experience with a technotimid user. Dee in

[LegacyUG] can't open my family files

2014-01-05 Thread Turnham
Hello all

I have just joined this group and hope that someone can help me. I
haven't used my Legacy for some time. I purchased the De Luxe version
7.4 (from my disc) but maybe I updated from there but I can't get into
the program to check as explained next.

I went in today and tried to open a family file. It said that the
format had changed and did I want to convert to the new format and
cautioned that if I did that I might not be able to see the data or
something like that. I clicked don't convert but I could not open the
family file. Would someone please explain what is going on? Thanks for
any help.

You have to allow the conversion to take place in order to view the file in v7.5

Go to our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com Download and in the
Frequently Asked Questions selection on the right you'll find a link
to earlier versions of Legacy (the current version is v8).

If you ever want to go back to a previous version of Legacy, you'll
have to create a gedcom in the version you're using and import that
gedcom into an earlier version.

If it's added to the Attached Pics tab, then it applies only to that

15 Dec 2013 reads 2-15-2013

It appears that all of the dates are missing the first character of the month.
I have reported this as a bug.

 15 Dec 2013 reads 2-15-2013

It appears that all of the dates are missing the first character of the

have reported this as a bug.

Also, UK format dates are being converted to US style. Not that this matters too
much because it doesn't look as though the birth and death dates are actually

Re: [LegacyUG] CORRECTION: Legacy 8 User Manual

2014-01-05 Thread Charles W Aubin
Ron,

I am in agreement with you that the already updated PDF manual should be
available for download. Those of us who live in Canada had to pay $15 shipping
and handeling - doubling the price of the already oudated manual. On top of
this the manuals were printed in Canada, shipped to Arizona and then srent to
Canada, go figure.

  Ron,

Having worked with computers since 1964 when many still had vacuum tube
amplifiers, and having worked as a programmer, senior technical writer, systems
engineer and database manager, among other duties, as well as acting as a beta
for a wide variety of software manufacturers, I feel that I am very familiar
with the software industry.

You obviously did not read carefully what I wrote. I did not advocate, nor
mention, providing program updates to Millennia's software at no cost to the
customer. I only speculated on alternative means of providing more current
versions of documentation to Millennia's customers who had already paid for the
program and its documentation. In the case of the PDF manual version I fail to
see where offering a free download update to that PDF file to those customers
who had already purchased a PDF manual would represent any significant added
cost to Millennia if they are udating that PDF version regularly anyway.
Naturally such customers would have to provide their customer number to
validate their entitlement to the updated PDF manual.

I am always amazed at how people manage to comment on other people's writing
without reading that writing. Any software firm is faced with a juggling act
between holding production costs at bay while also supporting their customer
base with adequate documentation. My suggestions were made with both concerns
in mind, and I feel they offered options that might satisfy both needs.

Perhaps a better, or alternative way of providing the Legacy printed reference
manual would be for Millennia to use an on-demand publishing service, such as
Lulu. That way they could provide the publisher with updates on a regular
basis and customers purchasing a printed manual would get the latest version
when they buy.

The PDF version of the Legacy reference manual should be constantly
updated along with the Help files. Those who purchased a PDF Legacy manual
should be provided with a means of downloading the latest version of the PDF
manual whenever it is updated, and at no cost to the customer. Updates to the
PDF manual could be provided to an on-demand publisher of the printed version
to keep that version in sync with the PDF version and the Help files.

I am a huge fan of Geoff Rasmussen's Legacy webinars, and have attended
almost every one of them. Although Geoff's book, Unlocking Legacy 8 is very
useful and enjoyable to read, because it is patterned after the Watch Geoff
Live webinar presentations it is not well-suited for use as a easy reference
work because it lacks an index. One must be willing to read through an entire
chapter in search of a particular setting or partial process.

Legacy/Millennia already provides free upgrades to their software - most of
those free upgrades have been substantial updates to the software that many
companies would have called a new version and charged customers for an update.
Millennia has not done that. Updating the user manual every time there has
been a change to the software could and would become an expensive undertaking
for Millennia, yet you think that they should undertake this additional cost -
free of charge to their customers. The help files are kept updated and I
personally think that is sufficient.

I'd be curious to know what other software company/companies update their
manual (whether printed or pdf) every time they have an update to their
software. I am always amazed at how people have this mentality that a company
has bottomless pockets and therefore being a customer entitles them to all the
freebies they can get regardless of the cost to the company.

2014-01-05 Thread CE WOOD
She is wondering why the convoluted process. It is a major pain to have to jump
through so many hoops when most pictures have the same caption, date, and
description.

Considering Legacy is based on Access, it is possible to allow the entry at the
Individual/Event/whatever level to carry over to the Picture Center and ALSO
have a way to add specific details to a specific use of that picture.
Programmers can do it; it's just a matter of doing it

When you're in Picture Center, if you add the Caption Date and
Description to the Picture List tab, then it will be automatically
added when you link a picture.

If it's added to the Attached Pics tab, then it applies only to that
 instance you're linking to.

This is fully explained in the Help file for Picture Center.

[LegacyUG] Missing boxes on Pedigree tab

2014-01-05 Thread Robert57P_gmail
In 7.5, we could turn on 2 boxes in the Pedigree tab:
Spouses/children
siblings

But I can't see a way to do that in version 8. I know you can hover
over a person to get their spouses/children, but I like having the boxes
fully visible.

In 7.5 I did NOT like the fact that the Spouses/children box did not
have a labeled, but I did like having the boxes there all the time.
Made it easier to see relatives at a glance, and made it easier to move
to other people. (The hover doesn't always seem to work or sometimes it
seems to come up slowly.)

Where I have specific dates with specific ages I use about
aged X in Y - born About Z

Where I have an event occuring at a date and that event can only happen
after a certain age - marriage, voting, etc - then I use Before
on an electoral roll in 1921 - born before 1900 (notes: based on min legal
age of 21 to vote in X location at that time)
marrying in 1867 - declared as of full age - born before 1846 (notes:
based on of full age being the age of 21.)

When I have a child of a couple being born/baptised at a known time, I use
other clues to establish marriage
Baptism - does the register indicate base born or natural or illegitimacy
in anoy other way? Yes? then I note that no marriage had occured at that
time, otherwise I leave it blank as unless you have confirmed ages for the
parents at that time and therefore know that marriage it likely to be
within the last year.
If I had a child next year, and an assumption was made that I married the
year before the child was born, they'd be wrong. I got married 18 years ago.
(Yes, Legacy would throw up First child born too long after marriage
warning signs)

As for whether to use About or Estimated - I prefer About/Abt simply
because Est can also mean Established.

Re: [LegacyUG] When to use est and when to use abt

2014-01-05 Thread Robert57P_gmail
My thought would be:

abt = you have some pretty solid evidence, but not exact (or if the
evidence said about)

est = YOU made an educated guess, or you KNOW someone else made an
educated guess. For example if you had the birth date of 1st and 3rd
child, and you had no date on 2nd child but you stuck in a date so 2nd
child would show up in correct order. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY PUT A NOTE
about this for that child, stating that it was a guess and not based
upon any solid evidence. But I'm not sure if putting in things like
this is wise 'cause someone else might not see your notes and may take
the guess as solid evidence for their file . . .

on an electoral roll in 1921 - born before 1900 (notes: based on min
legal age of 21 to vote in X location at that time)
marrying in 1867 - declared as of full age - born before 1846
(notes: based on of full age being the age of 21.)

When I have a child of a couple being born/baptised at a known time, I
use other clues to establish marriage
Baptism - does the register indicate base born or natural or
illegitimacy in anoy other way? Yes? then I note that no marriage had
occured at that time, otherwise I leave it blank as unless you have
confirmed ages for the parents at that time and therefore know that
marriage it likely to be within the last year.
If I had a child next year, and an assumption was made that I married
the year before the child was born, they'd be wrong. I got married 18
 years ago.
(Yes, Legacy would throw up First child born too long after marriage
 warning signs)

As for whether to use About or Estimated - I prefer About/Abt simply
because Est can also mean Established.

 I have now confused myself:

Child born 1867 with no marriage for parents - marriage est/abt 1866 -
source: marriage date assuming this is the first born child
 Parents of above
 child F born est/abt 1841 M born est/abt 1854 - source: birth
 dates assuming
parents aged 26 and 22 at time of possible first born child

Re: [LegacyUG] No Legacy News?

2014-01-05 Thread Robert57P_gmail
I have the same issue - no news shows up. My Options are set to
allow. And even if I click options and then check internet now, I
still get no news.
Clicking on the LEGACY NEWS header DOES take me to their web site.

No, there is more going on here. Looking at the source code, the a
href=”legacy.link.news.refresh” is the link for the Make sure you are
connected…message. That link doesn’t load regardless of any (or no)
prefix used. It is the same in Firefox as IE 10.

On the Legacy Home tab, there is an Options button in the upper right
corner, click that and then the Options item on the popup menu. On
the dialog box, make sure Allow Legacy to Connect to the Internet is
selected. But this would only block the news items from coming up by
default, they should still come up when you click on the “Retrieve”
message. Only thing I can think of is there is something external to
Legacy that is blocking that particular function for you, possibly a
firewall or antivirus function but it seems strange that the news
retrieval would be blocked and nothing else. If you click on the
Legacy News header, does the Legacy Family Tree News webpage open? If
that also fails it may be a problem with your ISP’s Domain Name Server
not recognizing the *news.legacyfamilytree.com* name (vs
 www.legacyfamily.com http://www.legacyfamily.com or just
 legacyfamilytree.com).

No - you're not alone.  I get the same message
