RE: [LegacyUG] importing from Ancestry
The owner of the online tree only has the options of downloading to FTM or a GEDCOM file. The GEDCOM you can download directly from within your tree. If you want all the images, you'll have to purchase a copy of FTM for that. Once the images are saved locally to your hard drive you should be able to export to a GEDCOM and save the image paths. I know this works from Legacy to FTM because I do it all the time, but from FTM to Legacy I'm not sure. I'll have to try it sometime. I only use FTM to find records at Ancestry because Legacy is a better program. This is why most people will NOT merge data into their data files. If one is to look at Page 234 of the book and then step 4 at the bottom of the page. It states “merges those that have EXACTLY the same information.” Since there was something different in these marriages information a duplicated was made. Aren’t these lovey new tools just GREAT. That “White area” is because the image is NOT the same size and/or ratio (height x width) as the thumbnail area is. Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages
Kathy, Did you happen to stop the merge process, then start it again? That can cause some problems. Also, there could be a glitch in the Legacy software, so you need to report it to Support. I had some sources duplicated by Legacy inserting normally hidden formatting code into text in notes and other places. It appeared to happen with only one revision of Legacy 7.5. A soon as the source notes are opened, the rogue formatting code disappears, so it is only visible in the preview. It was a lot of work to open all the duplicate sources, which removed the visible formatting code, and then use the new option to merge duplicate sources. [LegacyUG] Right way to add essays or excerpts from others to Family File
I have several essays written by others that I would like to include in my family file somewhere, but I'm not certain the best location to put them. Should I put them as sources, general notes, event notes, etc??? Example.. I have a two page essay written by H Caraway titled My Mother Bertie Le Mills Fish 1906-1997. It is basically memories of H from her childhood regarding her mother. So what is best practice to document this? Re: [LegacyUG] Right way to add essays or excerpts from others to Family File
Hi Jessica, They could well be sources for other information in the file - so you would want to record them as a source just as you would an email from someone letting you know of a new arrival in the family. However, so long as I had permission to include them in reports etc, I would put them either in General Notes - eg the General Notes for Bertie Le Mill Fish OR in an Event - maybe make a Memoirs Event. In my experience, few people actually read the sources though more are pleased to know they are there - and if you did put them in as the source text, how often do you include the Master Source text in your output? But it is these writeups that give life to a report. Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages
The merge shouldn't produce duplicate marriages. If it is, something is going wrong either in the merge itself or the way it is being done. Of course David, the merge enables you to merge people who don't have EXACTLY the same information. Only the automatic bits of merge require EXACT. I don't think there are any new tools in the merge part of Legacy in Legacy 8 apart from a special merge using FamilySearch IDs. The merge isn't trouble free when it comes to sources of events apart from the vital events. I'm not sure of other problems but haven't tested merging for awhile. I have other reasons for not merging data from someone else into my family file as a general rule. Someone else rarely has the same standards for data entry and sourcing that you have. I think it's better to be slow but sure when entering data. However, we all have different reasons for doing family history.
