Re: [LegacyUG] List of individuals with Ohio connections

2014-08-29 Thread Cathy Pinner
Provided locations are entered in a consistent way, you can do this
whether or not you follow the 4 field entry method. I don't use the 4
fields but find everyone living in a particular place often.
I just sort my location list Right to Left and then find the first entry
with my search term in it
eg: Australia, Victoria - and then highlight all Victorian locations
eg: England, Dorset, Sherborne - and then highlight all Sherborne locations.

The key is that the locations have been entered consistently always
including "state" and country.

If once you've used Show List, you choose, Create a Search List, you'll
have the option to open that list once you've closed the Location list.
Saves searching for the Tag.

The instructions aren't quite accurate.
At step 2 where you choose the radio button for Selected Records

[LegacyUG] Focus Group

2014-08-29 Thread Pat Hickin
I am trying to generate a focus group that will be the basis for a .gedcom
doe a relative.

In Leg 8 Help > Focus Groups, I am told

"The *Focus Group* window can be reached from several locations.

"1. From the *Export* window, click

*[1] Record Selection*, choose the

[2] *Selected Records Contained in the Focus Group *option, and then click

*[3] View / Set Focus Group*.

But after I choose step [2], I don't *get *the step [3] option.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong??

[LegacyUG] Import Gedcom from Family Tree Maker

2014-08-29 Thread Gary Davis
I created a tree in FTM from a Gedcom out of Legacy. It was a very large
file - about 18,800 individuals. Over several months, some updates were done
to both files, independently of the other. In order to sync my files again,
I created a Gedcom from the modified Family Tree Maker and imported it to
Legacy. Only about 3,000 individuals would automerge, leaving way too many
to check individually. The only option for an export is Gedcom 5.5. Any
suggestions?
Thanks

Rebecca:

Here is a solution, assuming you have followed the 4 field definitions when
inputting your data as City, County, State, Country using Legacy 8

1. Go to View, Tools, Master Lists, Locations
2. Select the Sort button and sort by State, City, County, Country
3. In Master Location window that is sorted, Find OH -- this will find the
1st Ohio location
4. Highlight the 1st OH location, then hold the SHIFT Key down and scroll
to last OH location and click on it -- this should highlight all of the
Ohio location
5. With all Ohio locations highlighted, Hit the OPTIONS button on right of
window, Select Show List
NOTE: This should bring up a list of all people who has OH in and location
field - I has 2052 people. this took a while to search my whole database
of 36,000 people.
6. Now you can untag everyone in your file and then use Tag 1 to tag
everyone in the list. You can Print the names of everyone from this
window, but you will probably want to go into reports and do a Family Group
Sheet or Individual report for each of the Tag 1 people.

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] List of individuals with Ohio connections

2014-08-29 Thread Ron Taylor
Rebecca,
It is pretty easy.
1) Clear tag1
2) Master Locations List, sort as needed, highlight all desired locations (hold
Control key while clicking)
3) Click Options>Show List then wait until the list of "All Individuals who use
this location" is displayed
4) Click "Tag Everyone in List" with Individual Tag set to 1 then Close and
Close Master Locations
5) Search>Find>Detailed Search for Individual Tag1 Equal to Tagged then click
Create List
6) Click Print and change List Report Options as desired
7) Click CSV file then click Create to export the data for Excel import
8) Exit Legacy, invoke Excel, import the CSV file

or instead of steps 7 and 8 you can Preview the report and Print it from Legacy

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources from one project to another?

2014-08-29 Thread MVMcgrs

Here is what I call a template. I use templates for my citations of
sources.

This is for the 1850 Federal population census:

family  entry; p , lines , [city],  County, [state] Population of Census;
(National Archives Microfilm Publication M432, roll ); Seventh Census of the
United  States, 1850; Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29;
National Archives-Washington, D.C. Digital images, Ancestry.com,
http://www.ancestry.com: date.

It is a basic source template for the 1850 census that has been digitized
by Ancestry. Many of my citations are to NARA microfilm which was used
before Ancestry et al digitized the records.

The basic template is what I want to copy to a new project. I do not want
to copy source details, they vary with each person. I literally fill in
the blanks with the specific information on each family.

I must have 50 or more templates. I started doing this when Visual Roots
went out of business. So how long ago was that? It was long before Legacy
was doing their version of source citation.

The original template is saved in it's basic structure, 1850 Fedrl.

The information to that specific person/family is saved with specific name

What I want to do is copy the basic templates to a new project. I don't
want to transfer already filled in source templates, just the basic template.

Cathy,

Won't that move what sources Marie entered in the other
file, not /just/ the template for data-entry?

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources from one project to another?

2014-08-29 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Marie,
The sources of course will be converted to version 8 when you convert
your various files.

However, I think you are asking how you copy the Master Source list from
one file to another as the files have a related topic even though the
people aren't related so that they use many of the same sources.

When you are in the file you want to copy sources to, go to View -
Master Lists - open one of the Master Lists (may as well be sources
since that is what we're talking about but it doesn't matter).
When in the Master List, click Options and choose Import
That will open a dialogue where you specify the Family File from which
you want to copy the list and a place where you tick the lists you want
to import. So you can import a Location list and/or Event Definitions
etc as well as the Master Source list.

For more help, click the Help button on that dialogue or search the Help
index using Import and look for lists/Master lists in the sub-topics.

If by Basic Source Templates you mean Master Sources, open the file you
want to move the list INTO and on the Master Source List page clcick
Options>Import List... then select the family file which has the Sources
you want to copy and tick the box for Master Sources. There is the
option to only include tagged Sources if required.
