Sherry, this doesn't really help us who are trying to follow the thread.
Saying you replied off list really adds nothing to our knowledge since we
don't know what you replied.

I really appreciate all your efforts normally but I for one would just much
prefer that you don't tell us if you replied off list if you're not going
to tell us what you're comments were.

Sorry to complain but this has always bother me what people have to reply
that they've replied off list.
But I'm sure I'll hear now why it's appropriate.

Since as you say everything before the last/ was deleted by the Check
& Repair Legacy probably added a path http://www.wikitree.com/wiki//
to your Master Media Folder List.

Richard,

Tried as your instructions below; Check & Repair did not crash but the inserted
media was turned from a hyperlink into a ‘picture’ (when checking from the
master source list) which Legacy couldn’t find when I tried to open it.

I used http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gouin-89 and everything before the last/
was deleted by the Check & Repair function so it appears there is a serious
problem with this routine.

There is a very serious problem with the Check / Repair tool in L8.

I am using version 8.0.0.439.

Here is how you can verify it using the Sample file.

For Asa Clark Brown, RIN1, click on his Sources icon. Select any event (I used
Unspecified because it is top of list).

Add a new source called WWW. Edit detail and select Media tab and add media >
Internet Website.

Now paste one of the following into the Website URL and Caption:

  https://www.google.com/

  http://www.detroitnews.com/

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3JY-54F

http://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?genealogie=Beriault_Josephte&pid=732103&lng=fr

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=101062064

http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/record_detail.asp?id=1994102

http://www.fichierorigine.com/detail.php?numero=240491

  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gouin-89

If you use one of the first 2 no problem except they are not a good source. If
you use one of the last 6 (all valid sources from my

database) you crash the Check / Repair tool.

If you add a forward slash on the end of the 6 valid source websites it doesn't
crash but it also doesn't open.

But the problem goes way beyond disabling the Check / Repair tool.

Now go to his wife or anyone unrelated even. Click on Media Gallery and Add
Media > Video (I attached an AVI file but I suspect any video type will do).

Now run the Check / Repair tool and it does not crash.

Go back to Asa Clark and check your web source. It is now a Video icon with the
web address in the caption.

I don't know if the video file has to be avi to mess up the web citation but an
mp4 does not change it.

[LegacyUG] Why no Ireland as county option for census source?

2014-09-27 Thread Kathleen Lenihan
I'm a TMG user looking to switch to Legacy. I really like the Source
Writer, but I'm wondering why Ireland is not one of options when citing
a census record. It looks like every other British Isle location gets
their own template. Why is Ireland left out? Irish genealogy is
challenging enough as it is - throw us a bone!

RE: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities issue

2014-09-27 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Margaret,

If I enter the name just as you show (missing comma?) it does not present a
problem.

Danville, (Independent City) Virginiano issue

Danville, (Independent City) Virginia, USA no issue

Danville (Independent City), Virginia, USA no issue

Legacy's Geo Location Database shows the name as follows:

Danville, Danville (city), Virginia, USA

Danville, Danville (city), Virginia, United States

but neither are recognized by the county checker.

Entering it as you presented is not an issue however 'Virginia' is not
recognized as a State - may still be a work around.

Jay,

Thank you for the suggestion. It seemed reasonable and worth a try.
Unfortunately it didn't connect. It said "There is currently no
default browser set up for your computer. You can specify by going to
customize and Launch tab." IE is my default.

Have you tried following the steps I suggested? I looks more involved
than it really is.

I've had avi video files in my grand kids media gallery for over 10
years. I recently started adding Internet Websites as source
citations. I had about 600 of them attached before I ever did a Check
/ Repair. When I did it seemed to go well and no problems sere
reported. A couple days later after 90 individual's records had been
modified I noticed all 600 website attachments were now avi video.

I made a separate post, "Don't use Check Repair" with step by step of
how to duplicate problem.

I have a restored file from before Check Repair and a sub-file of 90
people modified since. I expect I can merge them fairly easily.

Thank you

As a user, I can sympathise with that. But, as a developer I also see the other
side of things.

Users who are sometimes unable to phrase a problem in terms that the developer
can understand. Descriptions of what the user perceives as the problem rather
than the actual problem. users who seem incapable of following instructions
designed ti elicit further information about their problem.

It's not easy sometimes trying to read users' minds.
