[LegacyUG] Jewish patronymic

2014-10-08 Thread Jennifer Crockett
I have a small branch in my tree where a second cousin married a Jewish man.
I have been researching this family for my cousin and have now come across
records which give the Hebrew patronymic names. Where should I enter those
in Legacy?

Regards,

Jennifer

[LegacyUG] Can't believe I deleted whole family

2014-10-08 Thread JUNE HARVEY
I entered a lot of data yesterday and found an error this morning linking a
child to the grandparents instead of the mother. Panic took over and I think I
deleted the mother. All my work and a whole family is gone.

After a long think, decided that I would open a new family file and upload
yesterday's backup to it. The backup is compressed in WinRar and I have
fiddled around with it, but failed to load it.

I have created a new family file (empty) with a new name, but cannot get
yesterday's backup into it. Have tried, but WinRar keeps popping up. Would
someone please help me - I am desperate.

[LegacyUG] Welcome to FamilySearch Indexing! Free webinar by FamilySearch's Devin Ashby now online

2014-10-08 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
The recording of today's webinar, Welcome to FamilySearch Indexing!, by
Devin Ashby is now online for free for a limited time at
www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com http://www.familytreewebinars.com/. Devin
taught how to index records using the FamilySearch Indexing software. He
also explained the background and history of indexing, where FamilySearch
fits in, and showed a preview of the new indexing software to come in the
near future. Most of all, he showed how we can each pay it forward a bit.
A few comments from our viewers:

   - I have had indexing on my mind for some time. Looks like there is
almost zero learning curve. This should motivate me and many others to jump
in. The water looks nice and warm at the beginners' end of the pool! And I
surely have been a user. Now I can give a little back. Even considering
just all the Legacy webinars I've viewed, I need to give back plenty.
Thanks for such a worthwhile afternoon!
   - Excited to get back to indexing. You are so right it is a way to give
   back.
   - EXCITING, INSPIRATIONAL. We have a Family History club of Seniors (av.
age ~70) that I want to share this video with explain how they can
volunteer for indexing and at same time learn to use(search) FamilySearch
more effectively for their own genealogical studies!
   - I was so happy to learn about indexing today. I wasn't aware of this
project before. It's a great way to give back while searching for your own
family. Thanks again for a great webinar!

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't believe I deleted whole family

2014-10-08 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Sheila,

In Legacy 7.5 and earlier versions we frequently experienced users who
accidentally deleted their entire family file. Thinking they were
deleting just one father-mother family with kids, they would click on File
Delete Family File and confirm the deletion. Their whole family file
(.fdb) would then be sent into the Recycle Bin. Usually restoring from the
Recycle Bin would get everything back or they could restore from their
backup file and get everything back. The only permanent losses were a few
people who emptied their Recycle Bins before contacting us and only backed
up very infrequently, like once every month or two. I recently helped a
user restore from a backup. The most recent one he had was six months
old.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't believe I deleted whole family

2014-10-08 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi June,
What a time you've been having.

Your Winrar file is probably your Legacy Backup just with a Winrar icon
because you have Winrar as the default to open zip files.

You might find it easier if in Windows Explorer you go to Folder Options
and untick hide known file extensions. In Windows 8 the process is
different. See the View Ribbon and tick File Extensions. Then you don't
get confused by the icon Windows chooses to give your files though
they're still there when they're helpful.

To restore a Legacy backup - which is a zip file - you don't need to
open a new Family File.
You go in Legacy to File Restore and find the zip file you want to
restore.
In the restore process you can give it a new family file name so that
you don't override your current file.

You don't restore a family file which has an .fdb extension (and a
Legacy icon) - you open it.
In Legacy - File - Open.

If you are using Legacy 8, I suggest you move your family files from
C:\Legacy\Data which was the Legacy 7.5 and earlier default location.
Put them in ...Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data

Next time, when you find a link that is wrong, don't delete anybody.
Unlink the wrong connection.

There are good instructions both for restoring a backup and for what to
do when you find you've wrongly connected someone in your file on the
Tips page under the Help Center on the Legacy webpages. See Tips on
Fixing Relationships

[LegacyUG] Media File Names

2014-10-08 Thread William Hoff

I've read here that media file names should have no caps and no spaces. Are
there any other rules / best practices one needs to know about?

Re: [LegacyUG] Media File Names

2014-10-08 Thread Sherry/Support
Yes - edit file names *before* linking to them. Otherwise you have a mess
in relinking them!

Don't worry about the file names if you don't plan on posting webpages with
media files.

Legacy has accommodated the mixed case file names.

In the Web Page Creation options, on the Formatting tab, are options under
Filesnames to Don't change case, Convert to lowercase letters or Convert to
Uppercase

From the Help file in Legacy for Web Page Creaton:

*File name Format*

Some web page hosting servers have case-sensitive file name links within
their web sites. You can choose to have all the link names converted to
all lowercase or all uppercase if needed.

So you can use any case you want when creating your file names.

It's best practice to not include spaces as they'll be converted to %20,
which looks crazy g. I use dashes rather than underscores between words
since they're easier to type!

John-Brown-Birthday.jpg would work just fine.

Also, on the Other tab, there's an option to Ensure unique filenames

Again from the Help file for Web Page Creation:

*Ensure unique picture names*

If you have linked in pictures from different locations that have the same
picture filenames, you can have the duplicate names changed to ensure that
they are different. (To ensure a unique filename, a number is added to the
beginning of the name. For example, *sample - brownasa.jpg* might
become *f1_1_sample
- brownasa.jpg*.)

Sherry
