Re: [LegacyUG] Encrypting cloud storage

2014-11-09 Thread Lucy McDonald Shore
Hi David

I haven't had any issues...usually. If there's a problem all I do is copy
the file to another directory which usually removes the encryption (yes, I
use Dropbox for my Legacy backup files). I transfer files between my
desktop, a laptop (recently replaced with no issues), a tablet, and my cell
phone. But, as I said, this is with Dropbox. I don't know how well it would
work with IDrive...

Thanks Michelle. Don't think I have ever looked at this. However, I am not
sure I like it. I just clicked in the marriage event of one at random to
look at the data. Never changed anything but it says the data was modified
as of the time I looked. This doesn't seem very good idea. If I had
modified any of the data fine,.. but I didn't.

I've looked, but not sure if this is really what I want.

I store my Legacy data & picture files in a sub-folder of the Google
Drive directory, so the syncing works happily in the background.
In other words within Legacy itself (Locations 6.1 & 6.2) I point the
program to run the data files from the Google Drive folder & it works
just fine.

If I encrypt those data files they're not going to be usable in
Legacy though are they ?

[LegacyUG] Encrypting cloud storage

2014-11-09 Thread David Cripps
I'm happily using Google Drive to sync all my Legacy data and pictures
& videos, and equally I guess this question applies to those folk
using Dropbox as well.

Does anyone on this List use Encryption for more security on the Cloud
services ? What are their experiences of doing so ?

I'm only pondering this question as my son has just popped around to
finalise his resume and with his permission I now keep a copy in
Legacy under an event.
Over a coffee I started wondering about the advisability of doing
this, then of course thought about the possibilities of encryption.

I guess I might be a tad pedantic as not every file needs securing
and anyway if I was serious about something in particular I could use
the password facility with 7Zip.

Thought I'd throw the question out there and see the responses.

2014-11-09 Thread Paula Ryburn
Glenn, I just tried the FGS for a family where the husband and wife each had
events, the marriage had events, and both of their two children had events.
All of the events printed out just fine, in the numbered, non-bulleted &
combined versions of the Event Sentence Formatting, as well as the List Style
Formatting (which is now the same as the numbered). Do you have all three
types of events checked on the Report Options > Include tab? Sounds like that
might be the problem. Good luck! --Paula (Richmond, Texas)

Re: [LegacyUG] Creating a mtDNA LIST of ancestors

2014-11-09 Thread Paula Ryburn
Hey, Ron. I finally found some time to try out your procedure for finding
mtDNA matches for myself.
I have a very short "longest" maternal line, so it was easy to verify results.
My mother & grandmother had no sisters, but my great-grandmother had two
sisters. The sisters show in the final results, but their daughters do not. I
can see that an intersection of my (or my daughter's) ancestors and Abigail
Whipple's descendents wouldn't include the sisters' daughters, but if I were
looking to see who else was alive that might be carrying the same mtDNA as
myself, I would want to include these daughters, and their daughters, and so
on. Any thoughts on how I could tweak the procedure? Not urgent for me, just
wondering.
Thanks,

I use a SourceWriter style source using the Message broads/forum template.
Name Facebook
Name of Forum Facebook
Type of Forum Social Network
URL www.Facebook.com

Using that template the details for each citation include:
Author Last Name
Author Given names
Author Suffix
Title: If it is a status update I use the intro to the post for data
from info pages such as About I use the name of the page.
Date: The date of the post for status updates, I usually leave this
blank for about info unless that includes a date.
Date Access: self explanatory

I will also usually use copy and paste from Facebook to complete the
Text of the source.

[LegacyUG] Yikes! new problem with pedigree-style webpages in latest build of Legacy 8

2014-11-09 Thread Kirsty M. Haining
I’ve been working very hard to do a major update on my website, which uses
Pedigree-style webpages generated by Legacy 8. Unfortunately, since I last
published webpages in April, a new bug has appeared. I don’t know which build
created the problem, but now living people show up with all their details in
full view, regardless of checking the privacy options to hide them. It didn’t
used to have this problem in the pedigree-style webpages (although it was a bit
buggy in some of the other styles of webpage output). And, obviously, this
will not do.

I need a fix, quickly. My guess is that probably the easiest fix will be to go
back to an earlier build of Legacy 8, if I can figure out how to do that.

Thanks,

Kirsty Haining

I have created a Basic Source:

Source List Name: Website - Facebook.com
Type: Web Site
Title: www.facebook.com

All other fields are blank.

When I use this source, I put the pertinent information about the post
concerned in the Source Detail, ie the name of the person under whose
account the post was made (their real name as well as their Facebook
name, if they're different), the date of the post, when I read it
("retrieved"). Depending on the situation, I often also put a copy of
the post itself in the Text field.

Hope this helps. :-)

Lloyd,
Hover your mouse over the extreme bottom right corner of the screen, just to
the right of the M:1 box and you will see a colored square appear. Click that
square.

RE: [LegacyUG] facebook becomes a primary source

2014-11-09 Thread Michele/Support
Barb,

I wouldn’t use Facebook as a source per se. I would use the PERSON that owns
the Facebook page as the source. I would either use the personal knowledge
template or maybe the interview template. In the detail comments I would write
HOW the person knows the birth or death to be true. If it is the mother or
father of the baby posting then it is a no brainer. “John is Megan’s father
and was present at the birth.”If it is a death, “Mary is the Josephine’s
daughter and was present at the hospital when she died.”

As far the as the photos go, make sure you get permission to download and use
them in your file. I use the photo notes area for this information. “Photo by
David Anderson, used with permission.”

How are listers handling facebook as a source for births, deaths, and etc?
During the past month I’ve received notification of two deaths and two births
through facebook.. The births had pictures from the hospital.

I would appreciate your thoughts regarding the use of these and how you
document and use the photos.

Each to his/her own opinion of course, but I see no reason at all for
including all that location information in the Source Detail. The
purpose of the Source Citation is to indicate where you found the
information you have included in an Event/Fact. As long as you give the
full Census Reference (eg PRO RG 11/2117 folio 105 page 4) and indicate
the Head of Household (or the person of interest on that page) any
further information is a bonus but not absolutely essential.

The existing SourceWriter templates (which give an output which accords
with the advice of Elizabeth Shown Mills) additionally gives fields for
the Civil Parish and County (Sherborne, Dorset in the example I quote)
and for the nature of the Source (digital images, for example) and the
Website/Repository where you accessed the record.

If you wish to record every single detail of the Census Sheet, as you
indicate, this can already be done in the Source Text field. You also
have the option to record the full address with house number, street
name etc in either the Location field or the Event Address fields. I do
not see that "recording information from a different time period
when life was a lot simpler adds to the problem". If someone's address
is recorded in the Census as being "1 High Street, Sometown, Cumberland"
one simply records that, even if number 1 was later renumbered to 4A,
High Street was renamed Town Road and Sometown is now in the new county
of Cumbria, Cumberland no longer existing.
