RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database

2014-11-30 Thread Michele/Support
Charles,
A couple of simple things to do to make sure that Legacy can see the Geo
Location Database. Close Legacy, reboot your computer, then start Legacy back
up. If that doesn't work reinstall the current update from here.

Legacy's date field is just that - for dates. You can include the time in
the date field but you will get warnings about potential problems and age
calculations can't be done.

I usually recommend adding the time to the Notes for the event.

Pat,

I have a lot of births and deaths in Germany and their birth and death
certificates include the time. I think it is interesting information so I
definitely want to include it. I use the Birth Notes and the Death Notes to
record this. To the right of the birth or death field you will see a + sign.
This is where you can add additional information such as addresses, notes and
photos.

Hi Pat,
There isn't a particular field for Time of Birth or Death in Legacy. You
may want to submit a suggestion for it to be added. (See the Home Tab in
Legacy for a link to submit suggestions).

When known, which I don't for most people, I put it in the Birth or the
Death Notes which are accessed from the plus sign at the end of the
input line for the event.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Customing a Global Event

2014-11-30 Thread CE WOOD
And then there are, for Christians, First Communion, Confirmation, etc. But
these, like the others, are probably better handled by creating an Event.
Ordination, for instance, is an adult rite, which is included in the Legacy
list of Events. Marriage is too, and, although important for genealogical
purposes, is merely a rite when there are no offspring. I think there was some
heated discussion here about still calling it Marriage now that many are not
getting married...but then, genealogical databases are filled with progeny of
parents who were not married.

Isn't that that the purpose of Events?

Submit your Hindu list of Events as a suggestion. Legacy does have Bar
Mitzvah and Bas Mitsvah in its default Event Definition list already but
those, although Jewish, are not near birth events like Chr/Baptizm since
they are adult transition rites. Before someone else takes me to task I
know some Christian Sects do use Baptism as an adult event instead of
 infancy.

If you make an event for DNA match using the fields as you like, then

Will that work for you?

Syble,

I am curious. What exactly would you like to see on the Individual’s
Information screen and Family View DNA wise? yDNA and mtDNA value sets are
much too long to try and display there. Are you wanting to see the haplogroup?

If you are wanting the haplogroup you could easily enter it in the User ID
field on the Individual’s Information screen and then on the Family View change
the labels so that the User ID field is visible there.

[LegacyUG] TMG looking for new home Legacy vs RootsMagic 7

2014-11-30 Thread Dawn Beeks
I'm A TMG user but now have to look for new home, since TMG will no longer
be tech supported, just forum.

I've narrowed down to these 2 software programs and both have great
features. I think it's coming down to the coloring features. TMG has a slew
of colors to choose from, for however you wanted to setup your lines, such
as, non-related lines with same name, unknown lineages, adopted lines, lines
from Europe, etc etc.

In Legacy, I'm not fully understanding the coloring system. It seems line I
can only do two color scheme in each project. I have one project with seven
different lines of the same name. I don't want to make 7 projects because a
lot of the people are in the wrong lines and I need to switch over into
correct colored line. Also I have only the standard Legacy, I haven't
bought the deluxe, so maybe you can do this but only in the deluxe level?

II read that Legacy is working with TMG to do a transfer file, will the
color system be worked in, to be brought over?

Or has any TMG switched and found the color coding to be okay. I would hate
to do this and find my coloring system gone. TKS

2014-11-30 Thread karenhappuch
Dawn,
I've migrated from TMG to Legacy over the past few months. I looked at the
same programs that you have, but chose Legacy as my main program. At first the
lack of flags (Legacy calls these tagging) and the lack of accent colors
bothered me. While improved tagging would be great, I no longer miss the
accent colors.

The free version of Legacy has only 3 tags, but the full version has nine.
Mine were assigned very quickly and I want more, more, more.

IMO TMG users considering Legacy should buy the full program. That's the only
way that you'll see all of Legacy's functions and options.

Then you haven't followed anything that's been said here about being able to
customise the fields that appear on the Family View.

Right-click the any of the labels (or left-click, both work) and see the
Customise Family View window. Now, select the least-useful Field Name and click
on the small button with three dots on it: you'll get a list of field names to
display. Select the Event... entry. This is mandatory since the data you want to
display is help in an Event record. You should now see the Master Event
Definition List. Pick your event and you're back to the Customise window. Adjust
the Display name and Short name to personal taste and close the window. Viola!
