Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Website

2015-02-03 Thread Gerald E Boor
I took a look at the websites mentioned, but it doesn't appear these websites
are designed to allow one to view the hierarchy of a family tree. It appears
these sites, though quite good and detailed as to information, only show static
lists.

I guess that's why there are a great many of us who use Legacy on the desktop,
but TNG - the next generation of genealogy sitebuilding -on the web. It
depends on how you want your information to be displayed, as to what you might
choose to use on a website. But in our case, we would not be satisfied with
static lists without the ability to dynamically display actual family trees.
Just my thoughts for what it's worth.

Hi Barton

Thanks for your kind words about my site.

Re your question (NB there are no dumb questions!)

Each Family Tree created by Legacy (Legacy dubs "Web Pages") can be uploaded as
a stand-alone website, and some people do that - no coding needed.

However, my personal website at http://cmy.iay.org.uk/, created and maintained
by MS FrontPage 2002, incorporates two Family Trees. When I create a set of
Legacy Web Pages, I save it into a folder on my computer, where the rest of my
site is stored. Creating a link from the Home Page to the Legacy Pages is easy
and only required the first time. After that, the Legacy pages can be updated
and republished anytime with no effort at all. It's nice to learn some coding,
but you can do without it.

Mary, what a nice website. Now for a dumb question -- is the Legacy you used

you could create a website using the software. Is that the case? If so, are
the instructions on how to go about doing that on the software somewhere? I am
not at my home computer so I can't check. Was it difficult to do? It would
seem you need some experience coding to do it or someone would have to do it
for you.

Thanks Rachel. Legacy is very easy to use when creating a site and it allow
you to present your information in various ways. The front page (index page)
was the only page I actually designed and again it very simple.

[LegacyUG] Shared Events and Address Lists

2015-02-03 Thread Jane Colquhoun
Hello All

I'm just starting my Genealogy Go-Over and as part of that I'm filling
in the address information for events and the individual's information
panels.

I've found that if I share events eg a census entry, the only name that
is attached to the address in the address list panel is the primary
individual. The other family members who I share the event with don't
appear in the address list under that particular address. Is there
anyway to ensure that all family members appear, or is this not possible
using shared events?

Many thanks.

Jane

[LegacyUG] Women Homesteaders and Genealogy - BONUS webinar by Gail Blankenau now available in webinar library for subscribers

2015-02-03 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Dear Legacy Family Tree Webinar Subscribers,

I'll admit...I wasn't too sure if the topic of this webinar, "Women
Homesteaders and Genealogy" was really going to be for me. Turns out it was
one of my all-time favorites.

Sure, I've got lots of women in my pedigree (about half of my ancestors...)
but didn't the men take care of the homestead applications? Turns out, it
doesn't matter, because one resource Gail Blankenau mentioned solved one of
my brick walls - for one of the *men* in my pedigree. While she was
speaking, I casually did an online search in the database she recommended,
for my Nathan R. Brown ancestor. What I found, I had been seeking for
years! The 20-page homestead file, which was published in its entirety
online, gave a potential *exact* place of birth for my Nathan!! He signed
it with his personal signature.

*Never miss a Legacy Family Tree webinar, regardless of whether you think
it is for you or not!!*

This was our second recorded BONUS addition to the webinar library (not
available as a live broadcast). If you have U.S. ancestors alive during the
passage of the 1862 Homestead Act you need to see this webinar. Be sure to
download Gail's 15 pages of supplemental syllabus materials as well.

 the 54 minute
recording of "Women Homesteaders and Genealogy" and download/print the 15
pages of supplemental syllabus materials or click here to subscribe
.
Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Website

2015-02-03 Thread Lucy McDonald Shore
Kay, as a former Brothers Keeper user I, too, found Legacy to be the best
'next step' if I can call it that. However, I made the move to Legacy
several years ago (I think I may even be one of their earlier users!!).
I've never looked back - I still love the program. I must admit, though,
that I haven't yet set up a website so it's good to see what is possible
(as well as easy!). Thanks Mary!

Hello Mary, I really appreciate the information about making a web page
with Legacy. I started out using Brother's Keeper years and years ago and
only just last fall made the change to Legacy, so I am still learning how
to use it. My maternal ancestors are Scots-Irish (Cannon); my
grandfather's name was Montrose which I think just has to have some
connection to Scotland, but I may never know for sure. Interesting to
speculate, though.
Your web page is excellent and a good model for me to follow.

2015-02-03 Thread Mary Young
Hi Barton
Thanks for your kind words about my site.
Re your question (NB there are no dumb questions!)
Each Family Tree created by Legacy (Legacy dubs "Web Pages") can be
uploaded as a stand-alone website, and some people do that - no coding
needed.
However, my personal website at http://cmy.iay.org.uk/, created and
maintained by MS FrontPage 2002, incorporates two Family Trees. When I
create a set of Legacy Web Pages, I save it into a folder on my computer,
where the rest of my site is stored. Creating a link from the Home Page to
the Legacy Pages is easy and only required the first time. After that, the
Legacy pages can be updated and republished anytime with no effort at all.
It's nice to learn some coding, but you can do without it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event "location" somehow got changed

2015-02-03 Thread Howard Cady
Paula, My Legacy Option settings, the use of Geo Mapping and access to
FamilySearch make it easy to show that Legacy has several paths where the
internal workings of Legacy perform an automatic “combine/combine with”
function that ignores the values for Latitude and Longitude. Perhaps the
easiest way to see this function in action is to find a new family using the
FamilySearch feature of Legacy that has children born in the same location.
Use the “this is the same Person as mine” and “Share” option to download to
your file one of the individuals and the event using a location of interest.
Then go to your Master Location list and the location of interest. Look at the
list of individuals using that location. Go back to FamilySearch and download
(share) another person and event that uses the same location. Return to your
Master Location list and the location of interest. The list of users of the
location now includes the newly downloaded individual (an automatic
“combine/combine with” for the location).
Similarly editing the names for a location from the Master Location list so
that saved location names are now identical with those of an already existing
location will cause a location merger even though the Latitude and/or Longitude
differ. The new Lat/Long are discarded in favor of the older existing ones.
If you desire more information, let’s correspond directly – off list.

Bill, I know about the one where I select the two locations to be combined,
but this thread made it sound like there was some internal logic that
automatically combined locations. Or maybe I was reading it too late at night?
 Thx. --Paula

Yes the feature to combine locations is there. I use infrequently but have
used, in fact last night

The OP made me think of how many similar locations I have and that sometimes
I don't type enough letters to get the correct one to display before I tab on
to the next field... and how maybe tabbing accidentally to the field and then
doing something (I know we all "do something" unintentional & don't notice it)
caused a similar location to display & subsequently be saved. I hadn't seen
any mention of what the new location is on the records in question. Just a

I have noticed that when editing locations that my current option selections
and version of Legacy V8 (the latest) has an automatic internal
“combine/combine with” feature that sometimes creates unexpected results. I
have not determined what particular set of matches causes this automatic
combine, but I am not using the conventional US 4 place location convention and
I do know that mismatched lat/long entries do not prevent combining. This
might be the cause for others to have unexpected event changes.

Mary, what a nice website.  Now for a dumb question -- is the Legacy you
used to create the site the same as Legacy the genealogy software?  I
wasn't aware you could create a website using the software.  Is that the
case?  If so, are the instructions on how to go about doing that on the
software somewhere?  I am not at my home computer so I can't check.  Was
it difficult to do?  It would seem you need some experience coding to do
it or someone would have to do it for you.

Thanks,
