Has anyone tried burning the fdb file to a cd rom and seeing if it can be
opened by Legacy?

The semantics of Windows' READONLY bit on files is not the same as Linux'
Immutable attribute (immutability on Linux requires 'root' to set/unset) -- i
don't know if there's a true equivalent. So, i'd suggest that given that you
have no control over Legacy's insistence that it erase the READONLY bit [1],
that you try to use elevated privileges (another account at least) to set ACLs
on the file(s) in question to allow READ by Everyone (or those in question),
but only allow full-control by an elevated account. You may have to use

Once you've done all this, i bet you will run into Legacy fatally faulting and
exiting, however (which is why i'm not bothering to test the validity of my
theory). I suspect the engineers have made the assumption that they MUST have
write access to the file, and there's either deliberate code conditionals that
gracefully exit the program, or ungracefully take an exception.

I don't know if there are restrictions on mention of other vendor products on

Anyway I will +1 the idea that Legacy should have a View-Only mode.

Yes you can copy the .fdb file to a CD but Legacy will not let you work
on it there. It offers to copy the file to your hard drive where it can
be modified.

RE: [LegacyUG] DNA testing

2015-03-16 Thread Ann Barry
Yes. I was able to confirm a line that had circumstantial evidence but I felt
needed one more hard fact. However, unless you are willing to share your tree
on Ancestry, you will not get full benefits. I pull out a barebones GedCom from
Legacy and uploaded it to Ancestry and link it to my test. And I periodically
update the Ancestry upload as I add more information into Legacy. I strongly
advise keeping Legacy as the file you make changes to.

And my husband was able to connect with a lost side of his family.

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA testing

2015-03-16 Thread Thomas Jay Kemp
Go for the FamilyTree DNA testing: https://www.familytreedna.com/
Very effective.
They let you 'add in' your DNA test from Ancestry - so you get both sides
of the testing - so do both.

Very impressed with the practical results for genealogy research - we
confirmed an entirely new wing of the family - that linked from the
pre-records period - this would never have happened without this testing.

Even though there are few people with our surname - we were able to sort
out the surname into 5 completely different families. Only DNA has let us
accomplish this.

It's essential - do it.

[LegacyUG] Report Options not available

2015-03-16 Thread Jane Sarles
OK here's the thing: I need a descendant report from ancestor X. I am
certain there is some simple box to check or button to click that I am
overlooking here, but I can't select any options on the Report Option
screen. They just seem like they don't recognize the check. They don't
look greyed out, but they apparently are.

I have done jillions of reports in the past. Has the old brain lost too
many neurons at last, or is their a bug I don't know about?

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA testing

2015-03-16 Thread Wendy Howard
Judy Russell, aka "The Legal Genealogist"
(http://www.legalgenealogist.com/), writes about DNA each Sunday (her
time, Monday for me). You may like to take a look at some of her
columns, they're well-written and easy to understand.

Late last year she ran a "best of" series, including this one on her DNA
posts through the year -
http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2014/12/29/2014-top-posts-dna/

From what I've read of this blog, you need to consider what you are
trying to determine from the testing, and who you're going to test,
before deciding which tests might be the best one for you.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Jane,
Once you get to a jillion, the brain needs a reset. Likewise , maybe the
report settings need to be reset. Try the reset button in the lower right

[LegacyUG] RePosting - still need answer and is Mail list working??

2015-03-16 Thread Jay at 1familytree.com
Well since I havent received mail since March 6

I am reposting this, even tho' I see in the archives list, it made it to
the list.

OK, having a moment here where I know this should be fairly easy to do, but
the logic is escaping me.

I want to tag all of the spouses of my blood related persons.

I can use the "Related" selector which gives me all my blood related AND
their spouses.
But how do I trim out the blood relatives, leaving only their spouses?

Thank in advance for any help.

[LegacyUG] Searching for spouses of related

2015-03-16 Thread Jay at 1familytree.com
After a further search I see Cathy did post a response.

But really, to do this for all of my relatives I have to go to each of my
end of the line GGG___GP and create groups? I have over 100!

There should be an easier way

Hi Jay,
What you say is not quite correct. If you search for Relationship equals
Related, you do not get the spouses - only the blood related individuals.

To get just the spouses, first set a focus group or a tag for the line
you are working with.
Descendants of the furtherest away ancestor(s) relevant to that line -
not Entire Descendant line - just Descendants. Descendants does include
the spouses.

If you use a focus group, you need to turn that focus group into a
search list which can be done from the Miscellaneous tab in the search.
If you tag the descendants you need to first search for that tag (or in
the Name List use Search - show all tagged)

Now search within this search list - use the radio button at the bottom
of the Detailed Search screen - for Relationship does not equal related.
There's your list of spouses.

Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Report Options not available

2015-03-16 Thread Jane Sarles
No...high hopes, but I guess not. I did and it didn't. The column on
the left allows some checks, but none at all on the column on the
right. There are boxes with the letter C to the right of some of the
items on the right side. I do not remember seeing those before. That
does not mean they weren't there, of course.

Thanks for the quick response.

Re: [LegacyUG] Report Options not available

2015-03-16 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Jane,
The C means Clear

I wonder if you're not in the report you think you are. Have you gone to
the Descendant Chart instead of the Descendant Book Report or Descendant
Narrative Book Report?

If you are in the right report and reset settings didn't help, sometimes
it helps to close Legacy, delete the relevant .usr file and then restart
Legacy. That definitely returns reports to default settings.

For Legacy 8 the usr files are at Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\usr
Desc.usr is for the Descendant Chart
Descend.usr is for the Descendant Book
DescNarr.usr is for the Descendant Narrative Book

Note .usr files are text files which can be opened in Notepad and what
they're for is in the top line. Just don't edit them.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Report Options not available

OK here's the thing: I need a descendant report from
 anc estor X. I am
certain there is some simple box to check or button to click
that I am overlooking here, but I can't select any options on
the Report Option screen. They just seem like they don't
recognize the check. They don't look greyed out, but they
 apparently are.

I have done jillions of reports in the past. Has the old brain
lost too many neurons at last, or is their a bug I don't know
 about?
