The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email
providers will also work but you will have to give them a try.--- Begin Message ---
I belong to both.  I appreciate the "newbie" questions on facebook.  I also
appreciate all the people willing to take their time to answer what may be a
simple question to some of you.  There are no snarky attitudes on facebook.
As I understand it, you can join facebook and only participate in the Legacy
group if that is what you wish.  You do not have to be a part of the "social
media" aspect.

Legacy does have a web forum on Facebook.

I don't use it because I prefer forums that use the mailing list or newsgroup
format.

But the book report only allows one to do that with the ancestors or
descendants of a single person, and not everyone in the database.

Though that is what I would do if I were seriously looking for missing
information.

You do, however, seem to be participating in this forum.

People may have their preferences about which format and technology they like
to use for forums -- mailing list, newsgroup, web page etc. But they are all
forums for discussion and exchange of information.

In some cases it is possible to pick and choose - the soc.genealogy.britain
newsgroup, for example, is gated to a mailing list AND to a web forum by
GoogleGroups, so people can pick and choose which format they prefer.

But Facebook, unlike Google, does not allow such a gating option.

Some seem to be asking that Legacy set up another web forum, not on Facebook,
but that would have the disadvantage of having three forums instead of just
two, so there would be even more chance of not seeing the question that
interests you because it was on one of the other forums.

I don't believe it is possible to gate messages between Facebook and the
mailing list, so they will have different content.

I don't belong to the Facebook group, because I find the mailing list is a
far better format, because it is easy to save and search for messages with
useful content.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing information search and report.

2016-09-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Terry,

There are various ways to find Missing information.

Go to Search - Find - Missing Information tab and you can get lists of
people who are lacking say a birth place or whatever you've chosen.
Then you can use Sherry's advice to get a printout. The Search List is
the same Format as the Name List but only has the people that match your
search.

You'll also see that the Search has a Missing Sources tab.

Or you may prefer to do a book report and use the option to include
underlines for missing information.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy User Group Mail List vs Facebook User Group

2016-09-14 Thread Don Quigley
I hope I am typical of most Legacy folks. I belong to both the FB group and
this message board. In my case I do not use
FB as a social medium, but only as a way to be in relevant groups, like FB and
TNG, where I can view and participate in discussions of interest. I will say
that FB does make it easy to include images – say of a screenshot from Legacy
in support of a topic. I have found the Legacy FB group posts to be much more
of the Q variety than “social medium” (which suits my interests just fine).
The downside (without trying to appear snarky) is that quite a few of the
posted questions are obviously from “Newbies” and of little interest to me.
Having said that, we all were “Newbies” once and desirous of all the help we
could get.

I don't have a problem with it. I am on Facebook but have not joined the
Facebook page. If the mailing list were abolished, just think of how many
people would not have the ability to get their questions answered because they
refuse to join Facebook.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mailing List vs Online Forum

Thanks, Michele, I inferred that from other posts here in the list.

Is the Facebook page searchable? Are the questions/posts organized by
subject or category?

Although I have a Facebook account, I don't have a high regard for it
and refrain from using it as much as possible.

I'm new to this mailing list (but not to genealogy). I seems to me that the
mailing list format is a bit 'old school'. I wondering why Legacy doesn't
create an online forum instead? Forums have the advantage of allowing the
user to pick and choose the topics they want to read and reply to, instead
of getting 10s of emails every day (I joined on the 6th and already have
over 120 emails).

Are there reasons Legacy doesn't have a Forum? Opinions?

The two groups are not the same. This mailing list and the Facebook page are
in completely different formats. There are people that are only on one and
some that belong to both. Totally up to you. It would be impossible to cross
post everything but whether you ask a question here or if you ask it there, it
will get answered :)

Once you've brought up the Name List, you can create a report of who
shows in the list by clicking on the Print button and selecting the
appropriate fields to show in the report.
