It should be mentioned that SourceWriter sources are converted to basic in

Re: [LegacyUG] Data limit

2017-02-06 Thread Sherry
I've seen files with over a million individuals and a smaller file (fdb)
size and one with over 500,000 individuals pushing the 2 GB limit.

Besides individuals, notes, sources, events, etc all need to be taken into
account when determining what the file size is going to end up being.

But the more people and related data, the slower the file will run. I spent
several hours trying to do a file conversion of a super large file with
lots of sources.

Good thing media files aren't embedded!

I have seen strange problems occur with files that get too big - anything
much over 1.5 - 1.75 GB. It bogs down when running check/repair and other
tools.

Yes, 2 GB is the Access limit.

The Rootsmagic program keeps its data in an SQLite database. If you are
approaching the Legacy/Access data limit you might want to look at that, but

it would be best not to discuss it here, as this forum is for Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with Source Writer & Clip Board

JoAnne,

If your Basic sources are well formatted there is no point in converting
them to SourceWriter sources.
If they aren't, then the SourceWriter Templates can help you create a
better source.

I've converted some and not others and still have some to go. That's
because when I was first sourcing 15 or so years ago, I didn't do it
very well for some sources as I didn't fully understand what I was
looking at.

Legacy does not work on a Mac out of the box.

You can use Parallels or VMWare or others to run a version of Windows in a
Virtual Machine. Then you can install Legacy under the Windows operating
system on a Mac.

I am using Parallels with Windows 10 to run Legacy on my MacBook Pro.

the Master Source list and cite them to the correct people in my Tree
later ?? . **or do I have to immediately add them to a specific
person in my Tree.*

No, you can set them up and then wander off for as long as you like
before going back and attaching the Source to the relevant peopl/events.

*In other words, can I use the Source Writer to build my Master List and
afterwards, go back and link these sources to the correct people and
info and use the Clipboard to do this more quickly *

Yes!

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with Source Writer & Clip Board

2017-02-06 Thread Brian Kelly
1. Any source (Basic or SourceWriter) can be copied to the source
clipboard from a person's source list and then pasted to any other
person or another event for the same person.

Yes you can add as many New sources as you wish without immediately
linking them to someone. The easiest way to do this is from the "Add a
New Source" button on anyone's source list screen or via the Master
source list itself (View > Master Lists > Source) using the add button
there.

I do not think you can add New sources without linking via the source
clipboard because it wants you to add a source detail (the specific
details for one person).

2017-02-06 Thread Michele/Support
1) Yes, you can put Basic Style Sources on the Clipboard
2) Yes, you can add sources to the Master Source List without actually using
them yet HOWEVER be careful that you don't do OPTIONS > PURGE UNUSED or you
will lose them all AND you want to be VERY careful with FILE > FILE MAINTENANCE
> LIST CLEANUP because there is a check box there that will remove unused
sources.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Help with Source Writer & Clip Board

Forgive me if this is a really dumb question but I just started trying to learn
to use the Source Writer and Clipboard.

I need help / clarification on something (although I have already read the
book and watched the video's !!)

In the past, I was just using the Basic System. I have 15-20 sources entered
using that system and have connected them to people in my Tree. Can "Basic
System" sources be used on the clipboard ?

If I wanted to add a "bunch" of new sources Can I just add them to the
Master Source list and cite them to the correct people in my Tree later ??
. or do I have to immediately add them to a specific person in my Tree.

In other words, can I use the Source Writer to build my Master List and
afterwards, go back and link these sources to the correct people and info
and use the Clipboard to do this more quickly

Thanks for your guidance
