Greg,

You can do that provided you don't have the database open on two
computers at once and provided you make sure all the syncing has
completed - upload and download - after you close the database on one

Ron,

If the cemetery is entered into the Addresses, then you need to go to View -
Master Lists - Addresses - Event, highlight the right one and use Show List.
Once you see the list, use the Create Search list button, then close out
back to the main Legacy screen and you should get a pop-up asking if you
want to view the Search list you just created.
There you can use Options - Assign a Hashtag to everyone in the list.

How you get a relevant search list depends on how things are entered.
eg if you had entered a special Cemetery event and put the name of the
cemetery in the Event Description, then you'd do a Detailed search on Event
Description.
If it was only in Burial notes then you'd search Burial notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Resize of Legacy Application

2017-05-22 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
Still using Windows 7 pro and Legacy 8. Normally everything works great.
Have had Legacy "act up" after waking up my computer, etc. Closing
Legacy and re-starting it usually solves any problems. If not,
re-starting the computer does. I have made some firmware updates in the
past on my now old ASUS Notebook. Have Windows set to update
automatically. Does it at shutdown and then completes it at the next
startup. Once in a while that causes the loss of most of my "home" icons
and shortcuts. Re-start usually fixes that. If not, start with F-8 and
use the repair option. From my memory, hope this is understandable.

As a general note, this might not be an issue with Legacy but with
Windows. I have the same problem with Outlook quite regularly and
occasionally with other software.

Re: [LegacyUG] Resize of Legacy Application

2017-05-22 Thread d . mossfritch
Chris,

Have you considered the problem might be with programming in the computer
(driver or firmware)? As I wrote in my initial post, the first thing I did was
check the drivers of both the graphics card and internal graphics section of
the computer. I next check the BIOs level. After checking that, I only then
moved on to the application. And that was because the problem had occurred in
only a single window (main) in Legacy.

The only problem I ever had with 'Windows 10' since the release of that OS was
traced to the firmware of the HP computer. It took a while, but checking HP
support online I finally found the problem listed (deep into support) stating
that 'some' models of the desktop I had would not 'wake up' from sleep mode. HP
had a fix that 'might' correct the problem by flashing the firmware. I still
run Windows 8.1 on that computer (no problems with that OS for which the
computer was designed).

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-05-22 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - What exactly are RINs and MRINs?

(All versions, Legacy 7/8/9 for Legacy Charting and Legacy 8/9 for
FamilySearch)

We get this question all the time. RIN stands for Record Identification
Number and MRIN stands for Marriage Record Identification Number. These
numbers are automatically assigned by Legacy. Legacy is a true database
program (think MS Access) and it needs these numbers to function.

You can include or exclude them from view in Option 8.2. Some people like to
use these numbers as a reference and then tie the number to their paper or
electronic filing system. For example, John Doe [42] - all of John's
documents would be filed under the number 42. Some people prefer to file by
marriage. John Doe and Mary White MRIN 15. All of their family documents
would be filed under number 15. These are only two of many ways you can file
documents.

If you do chose to use the RIN or MRINs as part of your filing system, you
need to turn Option 4.4 OFF. Also, you do not want to go to TOOLS > RENUMBER
RINs or MRINs. If you do, Legacy will compact your numbers which will mess
up your filing system.

If you do NOT use the RINs or MRINs as part of your filing system, you can
reuse the numbers (Option 4.4) and renumber them (Tools > Renumber) which
will compact your file. For OCD people like me this is a good option. Having
gaps in my numbers drives me nuts.

Some people will write in because the total number of people in their file
does not match their highest RIN number. These numbers won't match if your
RINs aren't compacted (and don't forget, if you are using these number as
part of your filing system you don't want to compact them).

If you want to have certain people on certain RIN numbers you can do that
too under Tools > Renumber. For example, there are some people that want
their direct line ancestors on the RIN that corresponds with their
Ahnentafel number. You have to renumber one person at a time. For me this is
way too much work but you can do it if you want to.

If you have some of your RINs memorized, there is a shortcut to pull people
up. If you are on the Family or Pedigree Views, you can simply hit the
letter G on your keyboard and a little Go To dialog box will popup where you
can enter a RIN.

In the Multiple Lines of Descent Report you need to know the MRINs of your
starting couples to create this report. By the way, you can turn RINs and
MRINS on and off in Reports depending if you want to see them or not. Click
Report Options and then the Include tab and it is at the bottom of the first
column.

If you are on the Name List, you can sort the list by RIN by clicking the #
button at the top left of the screen (you can also sort by Given name or
Surname by using the corresponding buttons at the top). You can also sort
any Search List this same way AND you can sort the Index View this same way.

If you are on the FamilySearch interface screen you can sort by RIN there
too. Under the People field you will see 4 buttons. The first one on the
left is the one you use to sort by RIN, Given or Surname.

If you are in Legacy Charting, if you click the Current Person button on the
toolbar you can sort this list by RIN, Give or Surname in the very same way.

Have fun playing with your RINs and MRINs :)

Cathy,

Interesting. However, as I wrote:

"I never had problems with Legacy 8 for the few months use before upgrading to
version 9"

Nor have I experienced this resizing problem until the past week. Strange.
Whatever is the cause, just hope the problem disappears and suddenly as it
appeared.

Denise and Dave,

whatever the problem is, it's not a Legacy 9 problem as I have a friend still
using Legacy 8 and this has been driving her nuts for ages and nothing I've
been able to suggest has helped.

I'm currently using a baby 2 in 1 computer/tablet as my main computer (laptop)
has a monitor hardware problem.
I'm getting this difficulty resizing sometimes on this. I've found that it
resizes better if there is nothing under it but otherwise I'm still looking.

Thanks Dave. I was preparing to write about this same problem when
your note hit the list.

Sherry, thank toos. However, the solution you mention (deleting the
legacy2.usr file) has limited relief only.

I deleted the file three times yesterday afternoon alone. (I am still
‘cleaning u p’ after a massive GEDCOM import, currently working with
the location list.) I’ve check the graphic card drivers of this
laptop. (Up to date and okay there.) I only have the problem with
Legacy 9’s main window. The other windows (for example, the
Individual’s Information window), dialogs, messages, and Help have no
problems resizing. After deleting the .usr file I can open and size
the main Legacy 9 window once only. After that first sizing, any
changes to the window acts like a ‘rubber band’, snapping back the
window to the first sizing position and not allowing changes.

This problem is really frustrating. I never had problems with Legacy 8
for the few months use before upgrading to version 9 (the reason I
migrated to Legacy). Do you know whether this resizing of the main
Legacy 9 window is a ‘known’ and reported problem?

Hi Dave,

With Legacy closed, go to the Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\usr folder and delete the Legacy2.usr file. It will be
recreated when you reopen Legacy and that should reset the size and
placement of the windows.
