Re: [LegacyUG] Names list - resizing columns

2017-07-08 Thread Brian Kelly
It is not an issue unique to Legacy 9.0, you have never been able to
resize the columns in the name list window. The only control you have is
in what is displayed; (you can select all 9 tags or only 3), you can
turn off display of the hints and potential problem icons. Those choices
are in the Options button at the bottom of the window.

The only other alternative is to change the width of your Name List
window which will make more room for the Name. The details of the
selected person can be shown using the detail tab, is that what you mean
by needing to "hover" over each?

Using Options > Customize > View section 8.1 you can elect to include
birth and death years after names in the name list (and other displays).
That could help you identify your Cargill (and other surname) individuals.

It would be convenient to be able to do so: for example just now I get
several pages of CARGILL, and have to hover over each in turn to find
the one that I want.

Resizing the surname column, even at the expense of losing the other
columns or having to scroll to see them, would be more convenient.

[LegacyUG] Default Marriage Wording

2017-07-08 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
I changed my 'Default Marriage Wording" in If Not Married - Person 1 to
"Never married". In the individual view it now says "This individual never
married and had no children", which is what I want it to say. However,
that option is now grayed out in the individual view, so that I cannot
check on it. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong? I just cannot
figure it out. I am using Legacy 9.

Re: [LegacyUG] Hints

2017-07-08 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
Ah. Thank you Cathy. That explains a lot. It takes me to a FamilySearch
tree (which I do not consider a valid source) BUT when I click on the
source material "record" on the screen to see a source it takes me to
GenealogyBank and demands membership.

It appears the solution - the one I am going to try next anyway - is to
disconnect the FamilySearch part and see what shows up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default Marriage Wording

2017-07-08 Thread Brian Kelly
You probably have the person married to an unknown person. Right click
on the marriage box for that person and select remove the marriage link.
That will make him/her single and the never married box on their
individual screen will then become available.

It was mentioned as a needed feature but it does not exist yet. It is on

Re: [LegacyUG] digest mode?

2017-07-08 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

If I'm not mistaken, this group is hosted under the Mailman program.
I checked the Mailman website and discovered this:

"Q. What does Mailman's "digest" checkbox do?
"A. Mailman's "Membership Management" screen shows the subscribers
to your list and the various options set for each subscriber. One of
these options is the "digest" checkbox. If a subscriber has the
"digest" box checked, that subscriber will not receive each message
as it's sent to the list. Instead, the day's messages will be
grouped together and sent as a single message. If your list sends
several messages a day, the digest option gives the subscriber a way
to cut down on the total number of messages in his or her "in box",
while still seeing everything sent to the list."

So apparently it would be possible for this list to support digests,
just by checking a box for the individual subscriber. There seems to
be no technical reason for Legacy UG not to support this. Legacy
managers, would you be willing to do it if a subscriber requests it?
Is there a downside?

Best regards,
Michael Feldman
Portland, Oregon

Re: [LegacyUG] digest mode?

2017-07-08 Thread Ronald Bernier
The biggest downside is that there are too many people who do not know how
to respond to messages in a digest (they tend to send the whole digest back
to the list repeatedly), and most of those who don't know how to respond
will not/have no desire to take the time to learn how to respond to digest
messages.
