Re: [LegacyUG] Swap Split Screen Windows

2017-09-07 Thread Roberta Montpetit
When I bought a new all-in-one computer in May, I decided to keep the
monitor from the old one.

Just love what I can do with it. Only think that I can't move over the the
old monitor is Legacy so, if I am searching Ancestry and find something of
interest, I simply move Ancestry over to the old monitor, then record what
I found (after checking out what I find) in my Legacy Family Tree.

Re: [LegacyUG] HELP WITH PICTURES

2017-09-07 Thread Leon Chapman
Gary:

You have about 4 steps to get your iPad pictures into Legacy.

I will outline the process.
1. Transfer your iPad pictures to your PC
2. Edit / Resize your pictures (e.g., 400x400 pixels)
3. Copy / Move resized pictures to your Legacy picture file folder (e.g.,
Windows 10 --- c:/Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Media/)
4. Attach 1 file to Individual and/or 1 file to an Event for individual or a
marriage event for a family picture. This events picture is the only way to be
able to print the picture in a report. When the pictures r printed in a
report, they normally are only 1.5" high by 1" wide. For a scrapbook, I would
print either 4 or 6 per page and this is why you want to resize / crop the
picture used in Legacy to something like 400x400, 400x300, . you need to
experiment with the scrapbook report and see how many you want to print on a
page and size all of your pictures so that will work correctly.

Here are some other tips but will not go into depth of how to.
Step 1 above:
Several ways to transfer iPad pictures to PC --
- Use iTunes and connect iPad
- use a USB stick like sans to copy and transfer
- use an app like PhotoSync on iPad and PC on same Wi-Fi ( this is my favorite
way)
- use a cloud service like DropBox

Step 2 a I like FastStone Image Viewer. It is free and simple to use for
resizing pictures. About 10 minutes and you r good to go.

Anyway, that's a start. The devil is always in the details.

If you look up File Extensions in Help you will find a list of many of
Legacy's files and their purpose, but I don't know if it includes ALL of
them. (Suspect it doesn't.)

To be on the safe side, don't delete ANYTHING unless you are certain it
is no longer needed. But if you are finding the proliferation of files
with the same name confusing, why don't you rename your current Family
File? That way you will know which files definitely belong to the
current working file. You could then move the older files to some same
place from where you can restore them if you find they ARE wanted/needed.

As I understand it, Lega cy software will continue to be a
standalone desktop software.

I have been with Legacy practically since its inception.
Besides using Legacy for recording research and writing
reports, I use Legacy to create my own website, which I then
upload to GoDaddy, a regular non-genealogy related web host.
This gives me complete flexibility in the creation and
ownership of my website.

Since MyHeritage pushes family trees on its own site, will
Legacy continue to give us the capability of creating a
genealogy websi te of our own with the Legacy software?

Is Legacy the only genealogy software that allows you to
create your website independently and then upload it to a

Any thoughts on this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Is MyHeritage Worth It?

2017-09-07 Thread Anne Lo Forte Willson
My input on this thread...I am not impressed with MyHeritage's records.
>From what I can tell, they are all copies of what is available elsewhere.
However, I have found more of my Scandinavian family in trees on MyHeritage
than in other places, including pictures and sources...all new information
that someone in Norway posted regarding their family.

Also, I like on MyHeritage that even when the records or trees that are
'Smart' matches show up, I can mark them as a match, but NOT add any
information from the record or tree. FamilySearch, of course, has only one
tree, and you have to look in the Duplicate finder to find duplicates.
Ancestry gives me hints for individuals in matching trees, but I can't do
anything with them, so I 'Ignore' them and leave them sitting in the
'Ignored Hints' folder, this is a problem for me, because some of the trees
that I 'Ignore' are about my same people, but others are not and Ancestry
has no way to distinguish between the two. MyHeritage does, because you
can mark them as matches, but not add any information from them.

Sorry, a little convoluted, but I hope you can understand my meaning.

As for a coordinated list of all the records available at each
sitemaking a chart sounds good, but with all the sites continually
adding more records, that's not a task that would be finished any time
soon.

And whoever it was that mentioned most of their research was in Rochester,
NY, Wow! You are SO lucky! Mine is literally all over the world. I've
learned about a whole lot of different records because of it!

Obviously, you have never been held for ransom, or you would never go to a site
about which you have been warned. Many times, the site is trustworthy, but a
hacker has stolen the link to the trusted website! McAfee picks those up too.
It is one of the most common sources of being infected.

Anyway, I am s glad you have the patience and TIME to sit through an hour
long video.

McAfee is well known for ‘exaggerating’ – nothing wrong with the link / site
for the handout.

It’s well worth getting over your aversion for videos to watch this one – I
hate videos as well but this was worth it. Watch it on your desktop if you can
to appreciate it fully – otherwise why not watch it at your local library – a
much UNDER utilised resource.

I have Malwarebytes and Windows Defender on my PC. Neither one reported any

removed McAfee from my computer long ago because of the numerous false

If all you are seeing is tree info, you have the hint settings incorrect.
Switch the check boxes for my heritage, or if you want to see both sets of
hints check both boxes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Swap Split Screen Windows

2017-09-07 Thread Cathy Pinner
There isn't a shortcut to swap but you can drag and resize those two
windows and so you can swap their sides.

Better is to know which file you want on which side. If the one you're
in when you go to Split Screen isn't the one you want on the left, when
asked whether to open another file, simply say No and then highlight the
left window and use File - Open file to open the one you want.
