Re: [LegacyUG] RINs and MRINS

2019-04-10 Thread Chris Hill

Hi

RINs and MRINs are auto-generated identities applied to individuals
and marriages as they are created. They are there so that the various
parts of the Legacy database can connect to the correct individuals and
marriages. You might say that Frank married Ann, but Legacy will know
that the people Frank and Ann have unique RIN values and that their
marriage will have a unique MRIN value and have links back to the RINs
of the pair.

Remember that while Legacy will 'show' you various parts of the
data, they are held separately and need various identity codes to link
them together. Absolutely needed, from a programmers view, and totally
hidden from the users view.

The only exception to these are the RIN and MRIN identities, and I
suppose that there was a point in the past when they decided to make
them visible. The RIN shows up in the Index and Individual Lists, as the
1st column, and the MRIN shows up in the Marriage List. Unless you are
deeply into the system you can totally ignore them - do not print them
out and do not renumber them.

For the Descendent Book and Descendent Narrative Book, which are
different in the format and content, there will be a large choice of
options that you can use to control which data is included, and it is
worth running it on a small group so that you see what the various
choices will produce. Remember, also, that it will be based on one
person and their descendants.

If you want to include information on multiple groups which overlap
you can use the Multiple Lines of Decent Book - that will produce a
report based on multiple marriages at the top and will stop descending
every time it finds a person who has already been printed earlier in the
report, with a reference to them. Very useful if you have traced back
multiple lines of Ancestors and you want to produce a consolidated
report.

To produce multiple, different reports within a single report, with
single indexes etc, you can use the Publishing Centre to build the list
of reports, in sequence, as needed.

Always try out the reports on small sets of people to decide which
information you want to include, before you want to run it on a large
tree.

Regards

Chris

I definitely need to understand RINs and MRINs as I am getting ready to
create a Descendant Report - 12 generations. I do not have any of
these numbers on the names I have entered into my Legacy file.
Obviously it is something that I did not set up. And, how to these RINs
and MRINs work and what are they for.

I have printed out the following, but do not always understand the
directions:

Report Title Options
Renumbering RINs and MRINs - I need to number them!
Displaying RINs on Names
Descendant Report
Report Options
ARE THERE ADDITONAL REPORTS I should print to help in this process?

Since I am 80 years old and trying to 'wrap' up a lot of genealogy
reports, I have to ask for baby step information and explanations. And
if you wish to privately send me the information with your email, that
would be best for me, if I have to ask additional questions. I don't
want to clutter up the Group with a lot of posts.

Also valuable when you are comparing your data with others the number is a
simple method of Identification within your files.

Especially when or If you have 3oo Donald's with the same last name.

I suggest you don’t include them in reports. You don’t need them and those
persons reading your reports won’t understand them.

These are autogenerated numbers that database programs need to have. Some
people tie the RINs/MRINs to their paper filing system (I don’t).
