2019-04-16 Thread Reg Sherlock
Hi John, Sadly has been intermittent since Sat 6th April 2019 (AEST), same
message appearing.
Tried again as message implies and after few attempts connected only to do
complete sign in again (I am a registered LDS/Family Search member), this was
worse on Sun 14th April 2019.
Have had no problems since, my operating system is WIN 10 Ver 1903.

I was doing extensive FamilySearch testing this morning for several hours
and had no problems whatsoever. You may need to re-install just the
FamilySearch module. You can send an email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com
for step-by-step instructions.

Andre,

Welcome to Legacy. I made the switch from Brother's Keeper to Legacy in 1998.

You can keep your media wherever you like but it's best to tell Legacy where
the top folder is at Options-Customise 6.2. Many people keep it in a different
folder to the default.
One reason is that there is a path limit of 260 characters for media. That's
from the drive letter to the end of the filename extension.
The Legacy default Media folder is already some layers deep. Normally
C:\Users\\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\
If your Documents folder has been properly moved, the section before
\Documents\ will be different and probably shorter.

Re Backup.
You need to keep a number of data backups and it can be helpful to just thin
them to one a month rather than delete all but the last 10. It can be
encouraging to restore an old backup and to see what progress you've made in
the last year or the last five years. If you're in the habit of deleting people
or notes, it can be helpful to be able to retrieve them when you realise you
shouldn't have deleted those people.

You do not need to keep lots of media backups.

I don't use the media backup at all unless I need to send the media with part
of my file to someone else.
I keep my Legacy media in Dropbox (and I've moved Dropbox to shorten the path).
I then backup my Dropbox folder to external drives regularly along with all the
other data on my computer - like my Documents folder and email and other
pictures ...

To see what images you have in a folder that aren't yet attached to Legacy, go
to the Picture Centre on the Tools Ribbon Bar. Images that are attached will
have a plus sign in the first column. If that column is blank the image hasn't
been attached.

With your split between photos and documents note that pictures of people that
are in PDF format are considered Documents and Documents that are in Image
Format are considered images in the Legacy Media Gallery Add dialogue.

The main thing with handling media in Legacy is to not change the filename
after you have linked the file. The only exception is if you change the name of
an image file in the Picture Centre.
Otherwise you will break the link and the Media Relinker tool will not be able
to find it.

On the other hand you can change your folder structure whenever you like and
the Media Relinker will be able to find linked media and fix the links.

Cathy

I am a new Legacy user (Deluxe edition), switching over from Brother's Keeper.
My questions are basic but it will help me avoid poor choices which would
result in more editing!

File structure:
What is the most common (& recommended) file structure users adopt?
I do want to keep all linked files within the Legacy directories.
Media --> Pictures to only contain actual photos of people?
Media --> Documents to contain everything else?

I use to have sub folders for each surname but considering having just the 2 above
& more meaningful file names (e.g. Smith JA-Census 1881 England). If necessary
for duplicates I could add the RIN?

Backup:
It seems that the Legacy backup covers all media files which are linked to the
database. Any file which may be in the Media folder but not yet connected to an
individual is ignored (not backed-up).
Is there a report to list files in the Media folder which are not yet connected
to any individual ('work in progress').

Any suggestions much appreciated.
Andre

Re: [LegacyUG] Home network question - Legacy 9 Deluxe

2019-04-16 Thread John Faulks
Thanks Chris - good detailed answer. My network is pretty solid, I moved
off an old Dlink NAS last summer with SMB V1 precisely because of the
security risk (love my new Synology DS218).

Your point about the lock file and Windows networking is well taken - I
recall getting some warnings when I try to start a second instance, but
that could be the weakness, especially if Legacy has some local
configuration settings. Thanks for pointing out the Legacy configuration
repair process - next time.

And thanks Kevin - your thoughts on using backup avoids the issue. If I
simply allow the backup to happen at every exit, I can use restore when I
want to use a different PC. I probably use one PC more than 80% of the time
(in the room where my mother's paper sources are stored). The other PC is
near the printer when I want to generate reports etc. (or when my wife is
using the primary PC).

BTW I do use the Legacy cloud for the family backup but it does not backup
the media files. I have enough NAS space for frequent local backups, but I
have an external USB drive that is exchanged with a fire-safe duplicate
every two weeks and a cloud copy of critical files (such as Legacy) about
monthly because I am paranoid about backups and have spent too much time
collecting what I have.

Cheers

John
