Re: [LegacyUG] Version 8

2020-12-01 Thread Cathy Pinner

Marie,
You should take advantage of the current 50% off sale until Friday and
get Legacy 9. Legacy 9 is simply Legacy 8 with some new great features,
mainly hidden, and bug fixes. You likely won't experience any
difference, especially if you turn Hinting off at Options > Customise
8.13 which I think is the only really visible change.  The upgrade is
straightforward, unlike the upgrade from earlier versions to Legacy 8.

But if you really want Legacy 8, there's a link to earlier versions on
the Download page of the Legacy website.

I use version 8. When I went on the website Legacy is only showing
version 9. Is there any way to get the latest version 8? I know it
isn't being updated but I like it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Nicknames

2020-12-01 Thread CE WOOD
I have several persons who are and have been always called by their second
names. I have put the first name within parentheses, and use that as my "main"
name.

Some of the above have always signed documents using their first initial - J.
James x, for example.

If you sort by last name and have all variations as alternate names, you can
always find them. I include misspellings too because those are often found when
searching documents. Having all variations included in your alternate list, and
showing them in the Index means you can always find the person in documents,
newspapers, letters, et alia.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Nicknames

When someone is known by a name other than his given name, I write - for
my father - Ralph "Pat". For official documents his name is 'Ralph';
just one name. Otherwise he was never known as anything but 'Pat'

But what if John James were always called by his second name? If I write
John "James" i would imply that James is not a real name.

What do others do?

One of my father's brothers had Edward Oscar on his birth certificate but
was always known as Oscar. I used Oscar as his name, with Edward Oscar as
an aka.
