Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to unsubscribe

2014-03-25 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Thank you Wendy !

When I said I sent a message I meant that I fulfilled the requirementsof
the site to do this by selecting unsubscribe.
I got acknowledgement and a "Thank you " each time.

My apologies for the type I am really having trouble with the font size
in Thunderbird.

Re: [LegacyUG] Still using 7,5 for some files

2014-03-12 Thread Anne Hollingshead

Mike this was the solution.

I assumed the "part" was a dysfunctional file

There was no indication that the download was in progress.

I had not waited long enough for the update to complete.

There was no indication that the download was in progress.

This was caused in part because my wifi was extremely low.

  I have contacted my provider

However there appears to be no update. The version number is the same.

  It was all very confusing.

I was about to give up.

I have just bought a new computer ( W8) to upgrade from XP.

  I dread making the switch.

Many thanks indeed to all those who tried to help me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Still using 7,5 for some files

2014-03-09 Thread Anne Hollingshead
The problem is I don't have an option.

If I open 7.5 - go to open family file - the file of all my old files
opens - I select a file - press open and I get the message to convert.

If I say no I get the message I have an older format.

2014-03-07 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Cathy,

Could you explain how you can do this.

"search the current database for people modified
after that date and export them and then merge them into the restored file."

Also in merging can you find entries in notes that are different and can
you merge two entries manually.
I find automatic merging scary.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering info in location field

2014-02-26 Thread Anne Hollingshead
I use the multiple comma solution to be able to sort my locations right
down to addresses.

I use a dash after the town and add the address so that they will sort
well and when I am entering a location it usually automatically fills in
if I have a similar entry.

This way I can easily make a list for cemetery visits or be alerted that
another family of the same name lives in the sames street for example.

All I need is for legacy to provide the option of deleting more than one
comma for reports. I can do this in RTF for some- much easier to do it
in Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations

2012-11-05 Thread Anne Hollingshead

Most of my ancestors are UK or AUS and I use the four part
solution and I use a hyphen to the place name.

I find that this works well in my location list for sorting and
  checking.

My main problem is getting rid of the two commas in reports.

I do hope Version 8 has a delete two commas anywhere option.

Re: [LegacyUG] Rin missing on event report

Thanks,

I tried to create this report 6 times and finally got a report
of 9000 pages which was great (including Rins) but I cannot
discover the order that Legacy uses. It is not Rin number and it
is not alphabetical so I am not sure it includes everyone.

Also I asked

Where can I find the date that I first entered information on an
individual. I don't want the last modified date.

Re: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

I have just run a text file to capture the text in my whole family file
then copied that into Word so that I could edit it easily.

It ran to 7000 pages and transferred reasonably quickly.

I have lost quite a lot of formatting but it is very readable.

I now intend to do my main family lines on PDF.

Re: [LegacyUG] Getting rid of commas

2011-08-27 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Ron,

The benefits I find are ease of use.

If I have many entries for the same town/city ( I am not hung up on what
a town is or how big it is I just use common usage)

I put

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-9 King St, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-St Peter's Church, , Lancashire, England

This way when I enter a new Liverpool location I immediately go to

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

from there I click on the arrow and can check if I already have an entry
for an address for that town. If not I quickly create a new one
selecting and editing e.g. Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

When I go to the location list I have all my entries for each town together.

I have quite a few farm names or farm settlementsso

Longtown-Oakbank, , Cumberland, England

I use the third position for counties or states whichever is relevant to
that country.

When I sort I can immediately see e.g. all my Cumberland entries.

I use the second position for suburbs in large cities.

Camberwell, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

It works for me.

Can Legacy find a way to solve this problem so that non US users can

[LegacyUG] Getting rid of commas

2011-08-26 Thread Anne Hollingshead
I posted this with a poor subject so am trying again.

I use the 4 space method of entering locations but when I try to print
reports I cannot get rid of the excess commas.

I have tried both

Report Options ---Format Remove one or more leading commas from
locations

Report Options ---Format Remove two or more leading commas from
locations

Neither seem to work.

I have just done a check repair and have these type of results.

I can make no sense of them. None of these entries have Alternate names.

Surname ("Wright") for the Individual in RIN 955 doesn't match the
Alternate Name. Individual Surname=Wright, IDNR=679, Soundex=W623,
Alternate Surname=Wright, IDNR=246, Soundex=W623.
Changing Alternate to match Individual Record (m:256)

Surname ("Campbell") for the Individual in RIN 1114 doesn't match the
  Alternate Name. Individual Surname=Campbell, IDNR=672, Soundex=C514,
Alternate Surname=Campbell, IDNR=283, Soundex=C514.
Changing Alternate to match Individual Record (m:256)

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Source Clipboard- a cautionary note

I think a cautionary note in the Help file would assist.

If there is a common problem in using Legacy that this list has
highlighted (e.g. that has difficult to retrieve consequences)then that
would be a good source for taking this step. Perhaps those who have
fallen into this trap could suggest some wording for a cautionary note.

Re: [LegacyUG] Index view appearance

2011-06-21 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Yes Sherry I am adding these sets of information (DATA) which is not directly
related to one individual as "unlinked individuals". The information that I
store I may like to use at some stage in my reports so I am "uncertain where it
fits". Really I am just using Legacy as my filing system on family history as
well as my family history program. I can search using notes - general or notes
reference. I use the To-Do feature just for things that I have to find.
I don't see any need to use "inserting underlines for missing data" for my DATA
entries.
I have only about 2500 people in my file and Legacy seems to have so much
capacity. I am afraid it is rather unorthodox but it works for me,

Hi Jan,

I use the color green for ? red for female and blue for male. I can
easily see the unknown person entries because they are green and
scattered through my index. It is not important but I would really like
all entries to be in normal text and use color to distinguish them. If I
don't know the sex of a child I always use ? I have over 60 DATA entries.

Re: [LegacyUG] Index view appearance

2011-06-20 Thread Anne Hollingshead
I am sorry I didn't explain this very well. I don't put ? in data
fields. I just use unknown sex (?) with DATA as the surname to indicate
that this is not data about a person that is part of my family tree but
it is an entry in Legacy which I use like a filing system where I store
the information that I collect that may well be relevant to my tree in
the future.

Re: [LegacyUG] Index view appearance

2011-06-20 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Thank you Sherry.

I would really like to have that option. I use the ? slot for my data
that I can't yet relate to a particular person or for things like ships

This way it does not interfere with my index because it is all together
e.g.

DATA Family name -Country abbreviation- State abbreviation

DATA Town- State or County Country (for towns where I have many families)

DATA Ships Name of Ship

I find italics particularly hard to skim down and it doesn't achieve
much purpose if you have color to highlight those individuals where the
sex is unknown.

Re: [LegacyUG] Events residence address

I do a similar thing but I put:

Columbia-Columbia Cemetery, Boone County, Missouri, USA
Columbia-Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Boone County, Missouri, USA
Columbia-1492 Easy St, Boone County, Missouri, USA

This way when I start typing a location the basic entry comes up first and I
don't have to scroll to find it:

Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, USA
