[LegacyUG] Load Source Clipboard / Legacy 9

2018-09-12 Thread Arnold Sprague
This afternoon, I wanted to add a source from the "Load Citations
from Disk" option. However, the "Load Source Clipboard" was blank. I
was unable to "Select the Source Clipboard file you would like to
load." Numbers one through ten appear on the left, but the names of
the ten sources are gone.

What is the name of the file name that maintains these sources?
Is there a way to bring back files that are gone or empty?

Help and thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] FW: Warning about MyHeritage / OFF LIST / Personal Emails

2018-06-29 Thread Arnold Sprague

John, Cathy, and CE,
I would like to voice my complaint that
this message, with the Subject line, "Re:
[LegacyUG] FW: Warning about MyHeritage / OFF
LIST / Personal Emails" has been hijacked and
changed into something far different.

Those of us interested in the original thread have been thwarted.
"...Having difficulty deleting
MyHeritage from my computer" was not even close
to the existing discussion. The responders should
have, at least, changed the subject line to something relevant.

be that Legacy keeps a connection to MyHeritage

MyHeritage on the “All Programs” list but it
cannot be deleted as noted above. John

Others have had refunds on complaint. MyHeritage

On the other hand, as Jennie says, it may not have been MyHeritage.

Re: [LegacyUG] Customizing "My Toolbar"

2018-03-02 Thread Arnold Sprague

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
I have been wanting to make this request for weeks.
In addition to what you are asking, I would like to be able
to put up two "Set Relationships" icons; one for my wife and one for
me. I include both our lines in one file for simplicity and often
need to jump back and forth between her line and mine. I know that
lots of Legacy folks strongly prefer separate family files, but how
else could you find out that your spouse and you are cousins???

Thank you, Dave N.,

Is there a way to add Set Relationships to My Toolbar?

When I click on the Sources icon in Family View, the "Show all
Events" box is checked by default. Since I use but few of the many
Sources available in Legacy, I would like to be able to see only the
Sources I use for each individual. Is there a way to have the "Show

I've looked, I think, at all the options in "Customize Legacy."

[LegacyUG] Two sources / Two sets of parents

I have a Sarah Baldwin ( - 1669).
Source A shows her father is Sylvester Baldwin.
I now find that Source B shows her parents are Richard Baldwin and
Isabell Harding. This is probably the realistic parentage of her.
How do I handle this? In her Notes? "Alt. Parents" would be nice,
but I do not see a way to do that.

Thank you.

Anthony,
I think that Henry T. Peterson came closer to answering my
question when he sent an example of what the Legacy master source
would actually look like.
Perhaps you might address the part of my question of the
document being updated annually and potential change of editor. Would
I thus need a new master source for each year reflecting the *annual*
update, for example? Or is what Henry suggested more than sufficient?

Thanks,
  Arnold

I need to source a .docx document. It is available from the Murphree
Genealogical Association's website
http://www.murphree.us/ .
The document can *not* be used on-line due to its size of 5.4 MB and
length of 3,818 pages.
On the website, the document is referred to as the Murphree
Genealogical Association Database, (July 2015 Edition). As to the
author, we are shown this: "This official MGA database is available
for download, thanks to the work of the MGA Genealogist & Historian,
Bruce Jordan, and the Murphree Newsletter Editor, Linda Jordan."
Further, we are told, "Because of the massive size of the database,
it will be updated only annually, so additions will not be made immediately."
So, I know it is a word document, it is updated annually, and
the people putting it together may change.

I would like to have some help on how to source this document. It is
an invaluable resource for my wife's family.
Thank you.

Gary,
#1. This is a public list and requesting a private reply
deprives the rest of us who can learn from the responses you receive.

#2. I strongly suggest Simply Hosting
http://www.simplyhosting.net .
as a host. The price is right and the help provided is the best. I
run two websites with them:

#3. If you decide to create a website, strongly consider

to provide a most useful graphical user interface for your visitors.
Please note that Simply Hosting will install TNG, for free, for you.
However, installing it yourself has its own pluses, if you are
comfortable with big/detailed installations. For TNG user support,
there is "a support forum, a wiki, a blog, and two mailing lists."
TNG is large, so there is a pretty good learning curve.

Hope this helps,

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do List

2016-02-29 Thread Arnold Sprague
This, too, has been my hard-learned experience when it seems
that Legacy is locked up.
Brian is correct that an open Legacy screen is buried
somewhere. You just have to find a way to expose it, to bring it to
the surface. He spent some time figuring out how to do it. Thank you.

At 05:15 AM 2/29/2016, you wrote:
When Legacy appears to lock up and a function is not visible it may

Here are two tricks to make the window visible. It requires a
keyboard and I do not have a Surface Pro3 so I cannot test this with
any onscreen keyboard or add-on keyboard.

If you tap the Alt key that will frequently bring the current active
window to the foreground and make it visible.

Another trick, in case the hidden window is not in the visible area
of your display, is to use hold down Alt and tap the spacebar. That
key combination brings up a windows menu for the active window. If
the window is not visible the menu will appear off to the edge of
the display closest to the window.
Choose move from the menu then you can use the cursor keys to move
the menu location towards the centre of the display (if the menu
was on the top edge use the down arrow for example). When you have
the window positioned on screen hit enter to exit the move option.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source List

2016-02-24 Thread Arnold Sprague

Don,
I am an
unimaginative LUMPER. Here are some samples:
Book: Bio. - Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge - American Patron of Music
Book: Misc. - Notable American Women - The Modern Period
Cemetery: MN, Ramsey, St. Paul, Resurrection Cemetery
Census/U.S. Federal: 1910
Informant: Milstead, Claudia
Newspaper / U.S. / IL: Chicago Daily Tribune
Place / U.S.A. / MA: Billerica, Vital Records of, to the Year 1850
Surname / Phelps: Phelps Family of Amer & Eng Ancestors
Thus all
books, cemeteries, places, surnames, and on, appear grouped. Lets me do
the "quickly find" thing you mention below..

Curiosity question: How do other Legacy users quickly find a Master
Source for editing or selecting for a citation?

I have always prefixed my Source List Names with the File ID – ex. “2423
– 1920 US Census, Parks Bar Twp., Yuba Co., CA – Three Scott Families” –
which is also part of the attached media name – ex. 2423_IMG.jpg
(obviously I’m a splitter, not a lumper). That makes finding the source
easy, but a list of all source names, sorted alpha-numerically, looks
“helter-skelter.”  When sorted by the text after the File ID, the
source names are better organized and visually useful in finding typos
and inconsistencies in data entry.  But then it seems much harder to
find particular sources for editing or citation selection.

I’ve suggested to the Legacy folks that a “search by File ID” ability
would be very useful (and it would solve my problem).  But until
that happens I’m looking for ideas from other users.

One caveat – I can’t use source details for “primary” source information
and attached media (ie, no lumping) as my TNG website won’t “see” media
attached to source details in a GEDCOM, just the Detail Information and
Text/Comments.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Export / Source

2016-02-08 Thread Arnold Sprague
When I do a Legacy Export to make a GEDCOM file to put on my website,
the name of the source that appears on the website is what I had
entered in the "Source List Name (name to display in master source
list)." What I would like to appear, instead, is what I entered in
"Title." The rub is that what I entered in "Source List Name (name to
display in mater source list)" is for my own use and makes no sense
when it appears on my website.
Before I submit a suggestion on this matter, is there an overlooked
way for me to "customize" the source when I do an Export?
Thank you.

Cathy and Michele,
 Thank you for your replies.
I was looking for the link Cathy gave below:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/508bulqmn2a8p6f/LFT-Dragon.mp4?dl=
I had come across it earlier but could not find it again. Bobby
Johnson provided a super demonstration.

Windows 7 has free, built-in "Speech Recognition." See link below:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/set-speech-recognition#1TC=windows-7
Note that "Speech Recognition is available only in English, French,
Spanish, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese."
I will give this freebie a try and let you know if I like
it. My needs are simple: Entering a name or place, no ambient noises;
so this may well serve my needs.

[LegacyUG] "Set Tag Colors" (Customize 9.2 / Other User-Interface Colors)

2014-02-22 Thread Arnold Sprague
It appears that a tremendous amount of time and effort went into
designing "Color Palettes" and "Pre-defined color sets" for "Set Tag
Colors" (Customize 9.2 / Other User-Interface Colors). However, the
new subtlety does not make the Tags really stand out as before. For
example, with L7.5, I set up Tag one with a bright blue background,
two with bright red, and three black. Without paying much attention,
I easily knew when I had birth, marriage, and death certificates for
an individual. Now, not so apparent.
Is it possible that a standard color set for tabs be the "Legacy Classic" set?
Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Manual password

2014-02-12 Thread Arnold Sprague
Hi Wendy,
I would have to disagree with you on this matter.
Jane has a legitimate complaint that she is precluded from being able
to copy/paste her password to easily open a locked PDF file. Instead,
she is required to enter the password manually.
I have bumped up against this problem elsewhere and was told it was
the webmaster's decision. While I assume Legacy's webmaster did not
require this, someone did and I would be curious as to the rationale.
IMHO, it is not user friendly.
Take care,
Arnold

[LegacyUG] Click / double click in Legacy 7.5 / In Legacy 8?

2014-01-07 Thread Arnold Sprague
A wonderful feature in Legacy 7.5 was, in Family view, to be able to:
1. Single click on a parent and be taken to the "Individual's Information" page
2. Double click on a parent and have that person now be in main box.
In Legacy 7.5, this was achieved via Options/Customize/To Move Names
in Family View.

I have looked and looked, but do not see where to do this in Legacy 8.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel Report

2012-05-28 Thread Arnold Sprague
Howland Davis and Gene A,
I agree with Howland that Legacy does *NOT* provide an Ahnentafel
Report. At best, Legacy provides a semi-stripped down ancestor report
which passes for an Ahnentafel Report.
IMHO, an Ahnentafel Report simply provides the following:

#1. My name
#2. My father's name
#3. My mother's name
#4. My father's father's name
#5. My father's mother's name
#6. My mother's father's name
#7. and on

Legacy adds much more, such as information pertaining to the parents
of each person above, generation numbers, spouses, and on.
Howland wishes "to create a short Ahnentafel report in order to find
my first unknown ancestor ." I would like to do that for my family
also, but the Legacy report is *NOT* short, not concise, etc., as the
generally accepted Ahnentafel Report is.

Re: [LegacyUG] Window sizes

2012-04-13 Thread Arnold Sprague
Sherry,
In your final paragraph below, you suggested deleting
Legacy2.usr. I did that and nothing has improved.
I run three monitors on Windows XP, SP3. I place Legacy on
the RIGHT-hand monitor.
   1. If Legacy is maximized when I close it down and then
reopen it, Legacy opens in the MIDDLE monitor full sized.
   2. If, however, Legacy is "Restored down" (not minimized)
when I close it down and then reopen it, Legacy opens in the
RIGHT-hand monitor, but not maximized.
This is repeatable and has occurred for years.

My question is how can I run Legacy maximized (in
full-screen mode) on my RIGHT-hand monitor and have it open there
again, full sized, after I close Legacy?
 Thank you,
   Arnold

Re: [LegacyUG] Converting Source Citations

2010-05-07 Thread Arnold Sprague
Rich is correct when he writes below, "For
accuracy sake, when Source Writer was added, the conversion tool was there."

I only add this message to this long thread as it
was pointed out by several people that I was in
error in my message of Sat, May 1, 2010 at 8:46
PM stating Legacy users once had access to a
built-in Legacy conversion tool. The tool was
there and then it was quietly gone with an
upgrade. The conversion tool worked just fine for
me. I was saddened by its sudden demise.

I apologize in advance if this post is in html.
My mail program let me stipulate that it is
"plain," not "styled." If I messed up, please
write to me OFF-LIST at . Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool

2010-05-01 Thread Arnold Sprague

Jim,
For a short while there was a conversion tool built into Legacy. It was
wonderful. It made my life very, very nice. Unfortunately, it was soon
removed in an update; far, far before I could **easily** convert all my
sources. One must strike while the iron is hot
The reason we were given as to the removal of the conversion tool was
that it did not always work correctly and that there were some unhappy
campers as a
result.
I, for one, would be **most** willing to take my chances with the Legacy
conversion tool.

I pulled up the Master Source List, clicked Options.  But I do not
see Source Template Conversion Tool on the submenu.  Here is what
is listed:
  Delete Master Source
  Tag/Exclude Options
  Change Surety Settings
  Combine Duplicates
  Purge Unused
  Import Lists

What am I missing?

I am currently running version 7.4.0.25

[LegacyUG] Number of Notes in Legacy

Families, and Sources I have. However, I would also like to know how
many Notes I have.

Is there a way for me to ascertain the number of Notes in Legacy?

Dick,

Go to

and scroll down to Legacy Family Tree 7.0 User's
Guide (Download Only), $9.95, The official,
336-page Legacy 7.0 User's Guide. PDF version. On
the same webpage is a printed version for $14.95.

I do not see anything for Legacy Charting.

RE: [LegacyUG] Moving to a new PC

2010-01-23 Thread Arnold Sprague
Sherry,
I went to Tips/Moving Legacy Family Files between Computers
as you suggested. Unless I am mistaken, the .usr files are NOT
included/transferred when I perform the steps enumerated in
Tips/Moving Legacy Family Files between Computers. At least, I could
not find "usr" when I looked at the seven files in the zipped file.
If I am correct, what other files do we have to move so that
the two computers are identical in terms of Legacy?
 Thank you,
   Arnold

Re: [LegacyUG] GEO Updates Coming?

2010-01-18 Thread Arnold Sprague
Mr Fry writes below, "I suspect that they might even be slightly
embarrassed by ever making such a facility available and now have no
real means or inclination to upgrade or make more general purpose."

I, for one, am more than satisfied with what Legacy gave us. It works
most of the time. When I write "most of the time," I mean 80%-90% of the time.
I see no cause to insult Legacy. And I run a website which has
31,000+ places (24,000+ in the USA) on it.
