RE: [LegacyUG] Privacy issue when creating GEDCOM?
It could also be that TNG 10 is mistranslating some other tag to Private on import, particularly since at least one of the persons indicates he has no private tags in his Legacy Gedcom. Whether that is the case or not I do not know, as I haven’t yet had time to move to TNG 10 yet. I’m using the most recent build of Legacy, and do not see this happening in TNG 9.2.2 Brant Gibbard Toronto, ON http://bgibbard.ca http://bgibbard.ca/ From: Boyd Miller [mailto:bo...@vodafone.net.nz] Sent: February-16-14 1:22 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Privacy issue when creating GEDCOM? [LegacyUG] Names not being saved on adding new people
I remember a week or two ago people were reporting a problem I had noticed about the same time. When adding relatives mentioned as surviving a person in an obituary, I would often, but not always, find that the name would not save when I saved the new person. The name would be reported as unknown. In entering an obituary today where the deceased had a great many siblings, some deceased some not I noticed that there seems to be at least some, but not total, correlation with whether or not they have information entered in either the birth and/or death slots. For the living siblings I do not know when they were born, and clearly they are not dead, my only data point is the fact they were alive on the day their sister died, so I enter the date in a custom event called Living to indicate that they were alive at that time. The majority of these living siblings lost their names when I saved them, and I had to go back in and re-add the name, re-tag the name with a source (although I had tagged the name with a source before the first save, that source was lost along with the name in my first save). This does NOT happen in every single case, as at least one of the names of the seven living siblings did save properly. When I then went to add the seven deceased siblings, every single one of them added correctly on the first save. I don't know the day they died, but I did enter Before 25 Jan 2014 so there was an entry in the death spot. To test whether the correlation might actually be with the Living: No radio button, rather than with the dates I have also tried by adding five non-existent Test siblings, for which I entered a recent year as a birth date (so would be living), and every one of them saved correctly on the first save. RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
In TNG when I load a picture with data in the IPTC fields (I use Irfanview to enter the data in the IPTC fields first) into TNG all the information is automatically pulled from the IPTC fields and displayed with the picture. In this picture for example http://bgibbard.ca/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=4779 All the information shown in the grid below the picture was pulled automatically from the data stored inside the jpg itself. And if I change the data in the IPTC fields and refresh the page, the displayed data changes with it. Could something similar be done in Legacy? In that way even if the picture is moved the data is contained within it. I've just linked the same picture to several individuals and every time the caption, date and description was transferred to the Attached Pic and I was able to confirm that in the Media Gallery for the individuals. First, does your present version work properly for you. Does it do all you want it to do? Second, do you want more, another feature or three? Third, is the update version really ready? Or is it having issues? I'm still using version 5, since it does all I wish of it (except fully work in Linux OS). I've read about the new features, but they don't raise my heart beat. Maybe this will change, maybe not. But I do see that some of you delve much more deeply and you do need a much more comprehensive version than I do. Personally I like speed and updating to a newer version will not give me greater speed. In fact the newer the version, the slower it is. If you wish to use Family Search Tree, you need to be on the latest version of Legacy 7.5. Further, since Legacy 8 was introduced, Legacy 7.5 was likely frozen, including the FamilySearch add on. The updates to that will likely only be available with Legacy 8. The best way to look at L8 and see if you might wish to move there is to download the free version and install it. There are many features in the program that apply to the USA only and if the bug is there, I'd never find them and they wouldn't bother me. And the improvements in 7.5 weren't improvements to me, I just plain didn't want them. At this point, there are just too many things that are not debugged or missing in comparison with version 7.5. And too many useless-to-me bells and whistles features. Good luck with your database. [LegacyUG] Excruciatingly slow gedcom export
I sincerely hope that some effort is going to be put in to optimizing the gedcom export code for Legacy 8, particularly for large files. In Legacy 7 the export to gedcom of the section of my file that I use to update my TNG site took about 10-15 minutes to complete. In Legacy 8 the same process on essentially the same file with the same options just took 3 and a half hours!!! The biggest culprit appears to be the marking records stage in between the first pass and the second pass. That portion gives the appearance of sticking in one place with no apparent motion that could easily give the impression that the export had hung (although it does eventually move on after over an hour to the next stage) Brant Gibbard Toronto, ON http://bgibbard.ca/ http://bgibbard.ca Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). [LegacyUG] Shared events
Has anyone had a chance to experiment with Shared Events, and if so, what was your experience with it. I am particularly interested in seeing how gedcom export is handled. To the best of my knowledge gedcom does not intrinsically support shared events. What happens when a shared event is exported to gedcom? Is a separate event made for each participant? I ask because I publish my data through TNG, and I would like to have some idea as to whether shared events will cooperate with my scenario.
