Re: [LegacyUG] Messed up my upgrade from Legacy 8 to 9and also lost my family file
Hi Brian , thanks for responding to my call. I have located my family file but am unable to open it. It comes up in the Open File on the ribbon. The problem I think is my entering the Legacy 8 customer No instead of the legacy 9 Customer No, when opening the Legacy 9 download. I have been back to the download area with the download password, to try downloading again, with the legacy 9 Customer No, but the download page is unavailable. I feel confused looking at a blank screen when I have always had the family looking back. Is there someone from Legacy Family Tree monitoring the user group or should I go elsewhere? Your family file will have the extension .fdb. If you have a shortcut on your desktop to open Legacy 8 it will open 9 not 8. You can use Windows Search to find all files on your computer with the .fdb extension and it should find your family file. Note the folder where that is located then use Legacy File > Open File, point to that location and Legacy will open your file. I'm having trouble understanding this error message; "the changes you requested to the Table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain the duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again. (Note the cause of this is often fixed by doing a Check/Repair on the family file) Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN ? " Choices are; YesNoQuitOnline help Clicking Yes or No seems to have no effect at all. Quit closes Legacy and I am trying to avoid online help because I have since entered a lot of material. Could someone explain "changing the data in the fields" bit ? And "remove the index' and 'redefine the index' to permit duplicates. The cause of all this was a photo that was attached to someone, and I renamed it to correct spelling, and another photo I added to his father. I was using the Picture Center (which I think is a brilliant addition) After half a dozen Check/Repairs the Picture center did reopen and seemed OK so I carried on like a diligent Genealogist. But it is now shut with Error 3022. Re: [LegacyUG] Problem correcting locations in Mapping the Family
Brian and Cathy thanks for the response, I have fixed the Lat/Lon. Cathy your comments are so helpful, I did not realize the geo_code was not connected to the Geo Database. I need this as I have many US locations. It must be this database that could be improved by the facility to add locations, Provinces etc. It would probably be helpful for other countries as well. I Will put it forward as a suggestion. Charles.NZ - Original Message - From: Cathy Pinner To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2015 5:06 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Problem correcting locations in Mapping the Family Charles, The easiest way is to go to the Master Location list as Brian says and then highlight the problem location (if you access the Master List from the arrow at the end of the location field in the Individual View, it will already be highlighted) then click the Geo-code button above the People using this location list and choose Do not auto geo-code the current location. This removes the Lat/Long co-ordinates and puts a - in the L column. Then you can use a nearby location already entered and properly mapped to get near the place in order to manually map it by right clicking. Just make sure you've shifted the highlight back to the right location before doing the right click on the map. Note if you sort the Master List from right to left then all the New Zealand locations should be together if you've entered your locations consistently ending with the c ountry. Moving the map to the right place as Brian suggests is really awkward when crossing the globe and it's really easy to do something and see the map fly all the way back to the wrong location. Marking the location first to do not auto code stops that fly back. Note that the Geo-code button has nothing to do with the separately downloadable Geo Database. That's something I don't use at all as I have very few USA locations and I don't find it helpful for non-USA locations. I research and map all locations I enter checking the Verified checkbox when I'm happy the pin is on the exact spot. I include churches, street addresses etc in the location as I don't like the output when they're entered as Addresses. Cathy Brian/Support wrote: To edit the lats and longs for locations go to View master Lists Location. If a place is incorrectly mapped you can move the map to the correct place then right click with your mouse where you want the place to be marked. Legacy will get the lat and Long from Bing Maps for that spot and update the values for that location. You can also manually edit the lat and Long values on the Master Location list screen but you must use degrees minutes and seconds for the coordinates. Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database
Hello Michele Thank you for helping. I downloaded the Geo Database and it appeared to install ok but nothing is happening when I click to search. When I first installed it I got a message from Vista to say it may have a compatibility issue and to install using windows compatibility fixes, so I did that - but program not work. I then reinstalled it without the compatibility fixes but still - no work. The geo database is working in legacy 7.5 on the same computer. Any further suggestions? I will send you a special link you can use via a private message. You should be able to download it fine from there. Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with the Living Indicator and 'M', 'F', '?'
I have a couple, who both have birth and death dates on the form but all the indicators are grayed out for both. The dots for M and No for the man, and F and NO for the woman are slightly darker. I'm sure they were lit up in Ver 7.5 before going to Ver8.Very Strange My entry shows a dot for living but the M is gray, my son has 2 bright dots for living and M Eerie I don't mind the exclamation marks, I'll have to live with them, they do their job, and my success rate at getting rid of them is very low. You cannot modify the male female indicators when a person is married or linked in a similar relationship. To change gender in those cases you can use the swap husband and wife on the Edit menu to change the gender of both participants. Living = No will also be set and cannot be changed if you have entered anything in the death or burial fields. Those red exclamation marks are showing potential problems, if you do not want to see them on screen Go to Options Customize 8. View and turn off section 8.11 Monitor Potential Problems. Thanks for straightening me out. - Original Message - From: Brian/Support br...@legacyfamilytree.com To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thursday, November 27, 2014 6:35 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with the Living Indicator and 'M', 'F', '?' Your memory is incorrect. Legacy has always greyed out the gender when a person is involved in a marriage and has changed living to No and greyed out the setting when any details are entered for death or burial. Your M is grey because you are married. Your living is active because you have not entered anything related to your death or burial. Your son is not married so his M is active and you can change him to your daughter by setting that to F. Same with his Living, it is not greyed out because nothing has been entered for his death or burial.
