[LegacyUG] Event Report - to NOT include

2022-07-15 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
Hoping some savvy Legacy user can assist me as I set up Individual Group
Record to set up as a .pdf.

Under the Event Report I want to block/not include the names and email
addresses for those I want to keep private. I did enter them with the
event title of 'descendant' and
in the next column I have listed (this is how I would have m myself listed:
 'descendant' and Cynthia
Russell [[fergusresearc...@gmail.com]]
It would show up only as 'descendant' and Cynthia Russell (the
double brackets keep the email blank), but it does give my name. I do not
want any names showing as it would be confusing to many. Can you tell me
the baby steps to do that? Keeping my fingers crossed!I have promised my
19,500+ that I will never divulge anyone's email as it is only for MY use.

But I would like to do the columns without my name or email. How do I do
that?

[LegacyUG] Updating my Legacy program . . . help please

2021-12-28 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
My interest in genealogy began when I was 17 years old and received an
English assignment to write. My wise mother, also a teacher, sent me on my
way on the elevated train to Chicago, only a 30 minute trip, to research at
the prestigious Newberry Library . . . what a beginning! Now 65 years later
I am still thoroughly enjoying knowing about my many family histories. I
was self-taught, and, now after migrating through a number of genealogy
programs I have kep up with Legacy's many moves too. But, now as I am
considering retiring I want to leave my Legacy program in 'good order' to
pass on to other family members. Hoping some members can give me simple,
easy to follow steps to tidy up.

Yes, I made up things as I went along hoping that down the road another
insight might appear . . . now I want to clean it all up, please consider
useful suggestions.

As I researched I would add things such as the following, now I am
wondering if I should just delete these items which truly do not have much
of a connection:

For instance:
Unknown Russell, perhaps a date, perhaps not, or a place, I would make M or
F, if known. I am no longer using UNKNOWN! But, would if be a good clean up
to just delete all the people listed as Unknown, or leave
a , and surname such as ", Russell". I'm inclined to just delete!

[LegacyUG] Help to print Family Group Record generation by generation

2021-07-17 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
I do not know what I am doing wrong. I have put together 10 generations
of males to honor my mother's last first cousin's Celebration of Life. The
earliest generation begins in Wales, 1640 and the 10th generation has just
died. I have 5 sets of all 10 generations to print and give to 20 of our
cousins still living. With this group of 5 sets I simply printed them with
no problem. Now I am trying to print another batch of 5 sets, BUT for
Generation 1 only pages 1 and 2 printed, and no more. Could some one please
give me Baby Steps to complete this rather large project.

I want to print all of the pages for Generation 1, next print all of the
pages for Generation 2, ad infinitum. I am STUCK and need help for my 82
year old mind to complete the project.

Thanking you in advance, include ALL baby steps please,

[LegacyUG] Create a List

2021-07-04 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
Hoping someone can give me baby steps to create a list . . . to sort, to
select, to print

I have just over 19,000 individuals in my database. When I set up an
individual who was in the military, I would go to Title Pre. and list the
rank of the person. Examples: Pvt, Major, General

Also, I would list in the Events/Facts: Military in the heading and enter
other facts such as dates, locations, etc.

I am not sure if this is how I should create my list . . . please assist
with baby step instructions:

I should use the Events/Facts and only the word military to create the
list, but I don't know how to do that.

And, am I able to do a second list with the Title Pre. to sort and look to
get a list of Pvt., Maj, Gen. I know I would have to do a separate list for
each rank. Yes, I have a direct line General for the War of 1812.

Please assist me, thanking you in advance for your generosity.

[LegacyUG] Creating list of military service with rank

2021-07-04 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
I am hoping to get information on how to get military listings, perhaps
even by WW1, WW2, or just simple Military

When I am inputting information to set up military ranks I use the Title
Pre. along with Private, Lieutenant, Major, General, etc.

I also in the Events/Fact section I record the name of the war, dates,
places, rank.

Today I would like to set up a military list for my 19,000+ individuals in
order to post the numbers of people who served. How do I do that without
spent 2-3 days to set it up. I will appreciate any help and the baby-steps
to do so.

Thanking you in advance!

Happy 245th 4th of July we are celebrating, FREEDOM!

[LegacyUG] Birth parents vs Adoptive parents

I am working on a youngster who was adopted by a couple and now have just
discovered the child's biological mother and father (not a couple). In
Legacy should I list his biological mother and father for whom I have their
parents and grandparents? And this baby was adopted when he was an infant,
how do I list the adoptive parents? I know how to tick off the
differences in the records, but I do not know how to list the newfound
biological families? Both are important to this man who is now in his 50's.

Thanking you in advance for your careful explanation of how to list both
families.

I would like to set up a PDF, preferred or a Text File. Have tried both and
when trying to set up all that happens is 'collecting' that never completes
or stops, therefore no results.

I am trying to save and print an INDIVIDUAL report.

I apologize for not leaving complete information!

[LegacyUG] 7 Generatopm Report - assistance, please

2019-09-06 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
I am not sure what to call the report I would like to print, nor how to
print it. Yes, I need some assistance for my 8 decade brain to work
properly.

I would like to take one branch of my family. I am the 7th generation. I
would like to print only the direct descendants of each generation. How do
I start that and what is it called.

Hoping for help and understanding,

2019-07-25 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
Hello again,

Yesterday I sent a message to the group asking for very simple and direct
information to be able to add my DELUXE feature to my new installation. I
have all of the numbers, etc. but cannot understand that thee is no place
for me enter in my deluxe subscription which was paid for earlier as three
is no pop-up place for to to enter the info.

Some one replied yesterday but I did not know who it was, I am not often on
the Legacy Users Group. There were no instructions, just a long list of
possibilities. I am unable to select the correct response. I am 80 years
old and having aCterrible time getting the deluxe on my program so I can
print numerous pages to take to an archivist on this Monday. Need to be
able to have the entire DELUXE feature installed by then. Why is this SO
DIFFICULT?

Please some kind person, give me the steps beginning with step 1, through
to me having this feature installed . . .

[LegacyUG] ScreenShot?

I have a cousin who lives in Brazil and wants to work with me on our shared

features. He has a free program titled "Gramps". I would like to take a

to show that to him via email? I've never done a screenshot and will need
instructions so I can send it as a .pdf or ???

[LegacyUG] RINs and MRINS

2019-04-10 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
I definitely need to understand RINs and MRINs as I am getting ready to
create a Descendant Report - 12 generations. I do not have any of these
numbers on the names I have entered into my Legacy file. Obviously it is
something that I did not set up. And, how to these RINs and MRINs work and
what are they for.

I have printed out the following, but do not always understand the
directions:
Report Title Options
Renumbering RINs and MRINs - I need to number them!
Displaying RINs on Names
Descendant Report
Report Options
ARE THERE ADDITONAL REPORTS I should print to help in this process?

Since I am 80 years old and trying to 'wrap' up a lot of genealogy reports,
I have to ask for baby step information and explanations. And if you wish
to privately send me the information with your email, that would be best
for me, if I have to ask additional questions. I don't want to clutter up
the Group with a lot of posts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Book Publishing - Ancestor Book, just beginning

2018-07-24 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
Thank you Leon and Cathy for your suggestions. I will give a try to each
of them to see what I like best. I am familiar with all of the Legacy
reports, but I want to do the writing and sentences myself, so the Legacy
Event SEntence formats will not be of use to me. I am a rather creative
writer . . .

I was hoping for a blank page upon which I would write in paragraphs and be
able to number the footnotes for each chapter section. For example, I am
going to start with:
Military - the Revolutionary War
my footnotes would be M.1 for Military, number 1, etc.

Migration - Scotland to County Tyrone, Ireland (another chapter), notes
would be M.1
Migration - County Tyrone, Ireland to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, notes
would be M.2
etc.

Over the years I have sourced my findings, but the format has varied as I
have learned different things and I would like the footnotes to be
consistent and correct for today's format.

Even this wee discussion is helping me to think through my organization.

I may only do two generations for this report as my patriot, Francis Fergus
(1752-1841) and his wife had 9 children. One daughter died after her
daughter was born, and the daughter did not reach full age, so no further
ancestors from that line. But the other 8 have carried the line forward,
and, I am in contact with descendants of ALL 8 children via e-mail,
telephone, and mail! I know that is quite unusual, but that's what I've
done. My genealogy start began with my high school English teacher who had
assigned writing a paper about my heritage . . . my mother, also a teacher
told me that I would need to get on the elevated to Chicago and go to the
Newberry Library where I would find books about my family . . . and I went
and I did. When I found my name in one of the books, I was 'hooked'.
Nothing more until I had my own children and decided to help input
information into the supplements. After traveling to Scotland and Ireland
to walk the family lands, I decided to update the books my cousins had
begun 90 years prior. I inherited about 2,300 names, all from my one
patriot! I now have over 17,000 persons from that one patriot . . .
descendants, spouses and children. Oh, yes, it has been a journey. About
10 years ago I joined the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) . . .
now have 23 Revolutionary War Patriots, one being a woman!

Can you tell, I like to write, as I speak?

I'll give your suggestions my best efforts and may I keep in touch,
questioning, reporting, etc.?

G'night,

Hoping someone will be able to assist me as I begin to write my first
Legacy Ancestor Book. I have been researching for over 30 years and, I am
now ready to get started with all of the sourced information I have
accumlated both throughout the United States and abroad.

My book will have various sections and I would like to begin and sourcing
my patriot's Revolutionary War service. Not sure how to do footnotes for
the passages I want to copy directly. I am a retired English teacher, so I
am not asking how to do footnotes. I want to know if I should do my written
portions in a Word document . . . and do I do my footnotes at the same
time? Or is there a format within Legacy to accomplish that?

Keeping my fingers crossed to find a patient, kind and knowledgeable person
to assist me in answering my questions. I am not in any hurry to receive an
answer, as I have a lot to accomplish, but, I also know that beginning
correctly will enhance my willingness to continue to completion. Thanking
you in advance for ready my request,

[LegacyUG] Copy Part of a File to Make new File - HELP!

2018-06-01 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
I have been trying for many hours to split a file . . . can't get past 'go'.

Yes, I printed out the directions "How to Copy From One File to Another;
and also 'Splitting Family Files'.

I start with the Family View of the person for whom I wish to have ALL
ancestors. Next I split the screen. This is where I am STUCK.

I have hovered over one of the screens for a box, which does appear and
then I drag it over to the identical screen on the left, wait for the "Copy
Between Family Files' window and Nothing happens.

Don't know if I need a blank screen on the left and the right screen with
all of my information???

Just can't get any farther along . . . I need to have baby steps as I am 79
years young and I do want to accomplish this task. I have 18,000+
ancestors in my main file, and I want to split off just our Native American
file to stand on its' own.

Hoping someone can walk me through this, thanking you in advance!

. . . but, where my number is, I have no idea. I already downloaded the
Standard edition of 9.0. Do I need to reinstall 8.0 to find the number?

I need very simple steps to follow as I am 78 years young.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance and suggestions!

When I received my MacBook Pro, I also purchased the Parallels program
specifically so I could fun my Legacy program. I have had absolutely no
problems with my Legacy program as Parallels runs Windows on your Mac!

Be careful running Legacy 7.5 with Crossover, I've found if you edit any
events that you have previously entered, Crossover add a 0 0 between
 words, and underlined them.

An example. I had the following Event: Military: U. S. Navy Discharge
Paper entered. After using edit with no changes to the entry, then saving
 it, Crossover saved the entry as Military: U.*0 0 S.0 0 Navy0 0
 Discharge0 0 Paper*

If you try Crossover I would suggest using a copy of your Legacy file and
test this out before using it on your primary file. Using VM Fusion does
 not create this problem.

[LegacyUG] Cleveland User Group

2012-12-18 Thread Cynthia N. Russell
If you do set up a group I would be interested in when and where the
meetings will be held. I do travel to Cleveland even though I live in
Michigan, and I would love to attend if I happen to be there when you have
a meeting.

I have forwarded on the information to my niece as she has yet to get
started with Legacy which I gave her.

Well, I'm not thinking about hosting Legacy but just advertising it for
you. If you take a look at the list of Legacy groups, you'll see that they
meet in all sorts of locations.

At least contact someone from the genealogy group and see if they'd help
you with advertising to get a group started. You may have to join the
group to get their support but it's a small price to pay (usually g) !
I'm a member of a lot of genealogy groups that I'll never go to because
they're in areas where I'm researching and the newsletters and research
 services for members are great!

Although we encourage people to announce their groups on the LUG list,
you'll probably have better luck rounding up people for a local group by
posting in the area where you'll be meeting.

Re: [LegacyUG] filing system for genealogy

Thank you to each of you who has replied to my query. Now I can think
through which system to try. I have decided to scan and sort my numerous
travel files to see how that works for me to find specific scans by how I
have sorted, named and numbered them before trying my genealogy papers and
files.

Subject: [LegacyUG] filing system for genealogy

I have been using the Legacy genealogy program for many years, but I am
now struggling with how to think through scanning all of my papers to
become paperless by 40 feet of papers as I prepare to move from my home to
an apartment with much less room.

The scanner I have purchased, an Epson GT-S50 which uses the Nuance Paper
 Port 11.

I don't have any question about the scanner or program, but about how to
organize my papers so that I will e able to find each page I scan. Yes,
this is an organizational question! I am open to all suggestions to find
one that will suit me best.

I am 74 years young and I do struggle with electronics as I was not born
with any pc genes, as my grandchildren seem to have:)

If there are earlier discussion on this subject, please advise so that
information is not repeated, or please e-mail me directly to:
 fergusresearc...@gmail.com

 Thanking you in advance!
