[LegacyUG] Events vs Notes

2011-09-22 Thread Dennis Sutton
I just started attempting to add .jpg attachments to various events.
While doing this I noted something strange, not related to the .jpg
attachment which appears on my on-line web site.

I have a census entry for my dad and mom. However, on my dad's website
view the census is noted as an event while on my mom's view it is
noted as notes

Can anyone explain how this happens? As I said, this was found as part
of my effort to add .jpg attachments to an event. In the test file I
created I entered a census event for both and when I created the web
site from Legacy both have the census event appear as notes vice event.

Brian,

The individual and marriage events wording on the site I created is:

Individual Events: Noted events in [his/her] life are:

Marriage Events: noted events in their marriage are:

[LegacyUG] Orphaned Families

My research has extended will beyond my direct family lines. As a
result, I have a large accumulation of families in my database which do
not connect to my direct research and thus do not show up in my web

Can someone tell me how I might get all these unlinked families together

second page it created it added the source from page 1 and the new

completed the build. As I said the file size ended up at 3.4GB.

The new web page I created I was able to correct the above problem.
The only source records are recorded in a source file. Thus it is only
 34MB in size.

With this file and a couple of other things I added it took about 1

The output looks good. Still have some clean-up to do.

I didn't split the families. This web page consists of all my

for each record, the source for the previous record was included along

Furthermore, it also created a separate Source file, containing all

Yesterday, given the problem I encounter, I close all my programs

I just did another new create web page and again it came up clean

Wendy,

I originally had 6 family trees and about a year ago I opted to
combine them into one to make input easier. I was attempting to upload
the new Legacy tree on my web site, to replace my old TMG program file.
However, because of the size it seems it takes forever to upload. It
ran for over 3 hours yesterday and still hadn't uploaded. So I decided
to split the tree back to at least 4 separate files.

As I said, I was able to split my wife's family into 2 separate
trees (Eltz and Connor) and appears to have worked. However, I note
when I run Tree Finder, I am also listed as the only name on both families.

When I tried to split my family family (Sutton and Jones) I don't
get the nice clean separation that I got with my wife's families. I
created the new trees starting with my and my wife's parents. On her
trees her brother and sister are still showing with both parents and I
still show up linked to her through marriage.

Don't know if I should show up on my wife's tree with I run Tree
Finder. I also noted that the RIN numbers when I did the split continue
to be the same as from when I had the single tree, i.e. my father-in-law
was RIN 10318 in the single tree and still the RIN in the Eltz split file.

Really wish I had left the files split early on. I still have them
but have added so much more info and did a big source record clean up
that I'm reluctant to revert back to them.

ran for over 3 hours yesterday and still hadn't uploaded.

Re: [LegacyUG] Splitting Files

2011-08-25 Thread Dennis Sutton
Ron,

Went back and looked at one file I was trying to download. It was
actually 3.42GB. This consisted of 2892 files. This was the file I
created on Legacy. I created an Individual web page style with 4
families per page. Files includes all records, pictures (actually not
that many), notes, and citations.

The individual style was only way I found I could get all the
names in the database onto the web site.

Re: [LegacyUG] Splitting Files

2011-08-25 Thread Dennis Sutton
Ron,

I just created a new web page and found something strange between
this one and the original I created. The new page is on 20.4MB vs 3.42GB.

I noted on the original file that for each each page created, I
requested the source be included on the bottom of that page. However,
for each record, the source for the previous record was included along
with the new sources for the new record. By the time the last page was
created it consisted of 9914 source records when in fact it should have
no source recorded. The size of these files started at 4KB but with the
additive sources the file sizes toward the end where 3134KB.

Furthermore, it also created a separate Source file, containing all
the sources. This file was 3201KB

The page file sizes on the new web page I created are between 4KB
and 16KB in size and don't have the source at the end of the each page.
The Source file, is still there and still 3201KB.

Not sure what I asked for it the set up that presented this the
first time but apparently I changed that in the 2nd run.

So I believe I can upload the database a little faster. I have a
DSL connection. My upload is about .40Mbps while the download is
suppose to 6Mbps.

I still would like to go back and split my file but have not had
much success in working through the info contained in Legacy or with
help from Wendy.

I'll have to try to upload the new file again to my web page and
will let you know how long it took.

Re: [LegacyUG] Splitting Files - Web Pages

2011-08-25 Thread Dennis Sutton
Ron,

I was able to get the information onto my webpage
(http://njsuttonfamily.org). I use Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional to
transfer my files. I routinely run the clean-up that Brian mentioned.

Let me see if I can explain the other issue better. To create a web
page I did (InternetCreate Web Page). Then I completed the set-up
using the Web Page Style Individual. I believe the problem I had with
the first page I tried to create was on the tab Other I checked
Include source citations and hit the button On each individual's
page. This place the source on the first page it created, then on the
second page it created it added the source from page 1 and the new
sources for the items on the second page, and continued to do this
through (adding the previous sources) to each new page until it
completed the build. As I said the file size ended up at 3.4GB.

The new web page I created I was able to correct the above problem.
The only source records are recorded in a source file. Thus it is only
34MB in size.

With this file and a couple of other things I added it took about 1
1/2 hours to download.

The output looks good. Still have some clean-up to do.

I didn't split the families. This web page consists of all my
Legacy data together. Hope this clears things a little.

I have not fully absorbed the information which you have given, and all may
become clear as I work through it. However, some points do spring to mind:
your upload and download speeds are pretty much the same as mine, my
Pedigree pages are between (roughly) 10 and 15KB per page and I have the
sources on each page. Because I have a load of stuff in the same folder I do
not know the actual total size but I would think around 110 MB.

I am not clear what type of pages to which you refer - Pedigree or
Individual. At one time I used the latter for my One-Name pages with the
default of 10 names per page, which I later increased, but I cannot check
the size of these, as I no longer have any on my PC. I would be grateful if
you could clarify what page is meant by :
I just created a new web page and found something strange between
this one and the original I created. The new page is on 20.4MB vs 3.42GB.
This is absolutely massive for one page!

Brian's comment is very relevant, and it is a technique which I use if
everything seems to be slow. Similarly when uploading I suggest that you
shut down your browser and email client, and close as many programs as
possible. What is your FTP program btw.?

[LegacyUG] Splitting Files

2011-08-24 Thread Dennis Sutton
I am trying to split my database into 4 family groups. Following the
directions provide by Legacy, I create a Sutton family line with my
father. When completed I get all my Sutton line but my Jones (mother)
line is also included. When I did the same with my wife's family was
able to create 2 databases without the duplicate lines. Not sure why it
works with one family but not the other. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Splitting Files

Wendy,

I unlinked the parents of my father from the Jones database,
leaving only my dad and did the same with the Sutton database, leaving
only my mom.

Didn't understand the Tag thing. When I did a (ViewTree Finder)
my name was only one to appear under each family group. Is this correct?

My database has a total of 11000+ names so it isn't small.

Have you unlinked the JONESes from the SUTTONs in the new database? If
 not, do that.

Then pick an unused Tag - do a search on a specific Tag number to see if
it's being used at the moment or not, if you're not sure. Do it anyway,
so you don't make a mistake at this early point that would ruin the
resulting database. Search Find Detailed Search Look for
Individual, where Tag # equals Tagged (Clear List before this search
 should be selected)

Go to the Tree Finder (View Tree Finder), and click on Refresh to make
sure the list is up to date.

Now you will have a list of at least two trees - the SUTTON one that you
want to keep, and others including the JONES family that you've just
 unlinked.

Click on a tree you don't want. Select the unused Tag number. Click on
Tag the Entire Tree of the Highlighted Individual. Repeat for all
 unwanted trees.

Now everyone who is not in the tree(s) that you want to keep in this
file are tagged with your selected Tag number.

Go to Advanced Deleting (Tools Advanced Deleting). Select your chosen
Tag number. Choose whether to retain the tick in the box Confirm Each
Deletion or not*. The radio button Delete all Individuals tagged on:
should be highlighted already - that's the one you want. When you're
ready, click on the Apply button.

When that is finished, you should only have the tree(s) you wanted to
 keep in that file.

 * The recommended action here is to confirm each deletion, and that's a
good idea to make sure you don't make a mistake. However, when I'm
working through this exercise, I'm usually working on a copy of my main
database which is quickly and easily reconstructed if I make an error -
and I'm usually deleting hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals, so
confirming each one would be extremely tedious to the point where I'd
stop noticing who was presented for confirmation and make a mistake
anyway. Make your own choice, based on your own needs and skills.
Always have a backup of some sort, whether it be a copy of the file or
an actual backup run just before you start the exercise.

 Hope this helps. :-)

 Kind Regards,
 Wendy

Tree Finder finds all the separate trees in your database, that is, the
people in one tree are not connected (in your database) in any way to
 the people in another tree.

What you see in the list at Tree Finder is the the individual with the
lowest RIN. Who may or may not be the person who you recognise as the
focus of that tree. So you might need to look a little closer to
identify each tree to your understanding.

If you have only one tree showing in Tree Finder, check that the people
you altered are still unlinked, and make sure you Refresh the Tree
Finder, in case something isn't right there.

If you have unlinked the right people from their parents, and there's
still only one tree, then I think they must be related to each other in
 another way.

The Tag thing is a quick and easy way to identify the people who are
not in the tree that you want to keep, and deleting them.

Does that clarify it for you?

Look in Report Options and select the Include tab. Make sure you have
selected Print Source Citations and have NOT selected If an event had
multiple citations, combine them into one paragraph. Now look to the
right side of the same tab and select Include master source pictures
and/or Include detail source pictures, whichever option is appropriate.

[LegacyUG] Connecting Child to Mother

I just found that two children listed with Sutton surnames are children
of the mother either out of wedlock or a 1st marriage. I have
disconnected these two children from the Sutton family but now need to

living with his grandmother and mother but the mother is noted as
single, surname is given as Hardin or Harden.

Is it possible to just connect o mother?

Here's a short Oklahoma history lesson:

First, France owned the territory.  Then skipping ahead after the
 Louisiana Purchase...

Between 04 July 1819 and 15 June 1836, today's Oklahoma land was part
of the incorporated Territory of Arkansaw (yes, this is correctly
spelled). On 15 Nov 1824 and again on 06 May 1828, a western portion
of the Arkansaw Territory was given up as a result of Indian treaties.

The panhandle of what is now part of Oklahoma was claimed by the
Republic of Texas prior to 29 Dec 1845.  From that date until 02 May
1890, this 170 mile strip of land remained unassigned, or /No Man's
Land./Â Settlers unofficially referred to this area as Cimarron
Territory.  After 1890, the unassigned area became part of Oklahoma
 Territory (not the state).

_On 16 Mar 1896, land that made up Greer County, Tesas (the state)
became part of Oklahoma Territory (not the state).  This area is now
located in Beckham, Greer, and Jackson Counties in Oklahoma._

Then on 16 Nov 1907, the Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were
combined to form the State of Oklahoma.

Long story short, depending on the date and location, an area that is
now in Oklahoma may be designated as having been in:

 1) French Territory
 2) Republic of Texas
 3) Texas
 4) Arkansaw Territory
 5) Indian Territory
 6) Oklahoma Territory
 7) Cimarron Strip (unofficial)
 8) Oklahoma

Legacy sometimes does not recognize the differences and objects to
one of these locations, however, it is what it is.

In TMG there is a capability of copying a source, which when selected would
add a duplicate of that source to the master source list. You can then go
in and edit that source making it whatever you want. For instance, I have a
Census source for 1920, Warren Co., NJ. I want to add a source for 1920,
Sussex Co., NJ. I can just copy the Warren Co. source and than edit to
Sussex Co. Can this be done in Legacy? Hope I made myself clear on what
I'm looking for. Thanks, Dennis

You can accomplish this by editing the Master Source for Census source
for 1920, Warren Co., NJ. When you try to save your changes, Legacy
will ask you if you want to overlay the original source *OR* create a
new source. Just choose the latter.

Sorry Deborah. TMG is The Master Genealogist, another genealogy program.

Okay, I give. What is TMG?

Ron Ferguson wrote:
 Dennis,

Probably not in the same way as with TMG, but there is the Source Clipboard
which allows the same Master Source to be used for multiple events and for
the Source Detail to be amended. Comprehensive details on its use are in the
 Help Files.

In TMG there is a capability of copying a source, which when selected would
add a duplicate of that source to the master source list. You can then go
in and edit that source making it whatever you want. For instance, I have a
Census source for 1920, Warren Co., NJ. I want to add a source for 1920,
Sussex Co., NJ. I can just copy the Warren Co. source and than edit to
Sussex Co. Can this be done in Legacy? Hope I made myself clear on what
 I'm looking for. Thanks, Dennis

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing sources

2009-12-24 Thread Dennis Sutton
Dennis,

I have also just started using Legacy and am updating my source info from
that which I had on TMG. I tried your suggested method and found it only works
when the source style is the same, i.e. Basic to Basic or Template to Template
but not a combination Basic to Template.

Dennis,
I agree. I had assumed Martha had created a new source and started
changing but now I see she probably posted before making any changes.

Why not just edit the secondary Master Source and change it to the
primary Master Source? It sounds like that secondary source is going to
 disappear anyway.
