Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage list
As my mother would say, when the blood got back to my brain I finally understood what was happening. I deleted the marriage link and that got rid of that marriage. But, when I had Legacy renumber the MRINs it moved a “ghost” marriage into the number I had just cleared. So, I have now started at the end of the list and hopefully this will solve my problem. Ila From: Ila East Sent: Tuesday, March 3, 2015 9:27 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Marriage list After discussing filing systems, I decided this morning to check my marriage list and I found hundreds of marriages with Unknown and Unknown. When I got to investigating further I found that each marriage had either a source attached, a marriage note, or a date. I went through a number of these marriages and deleted all the data and then had Legacy renumber the MRINs. Several were reused, but most were not. I then went through the same ones and made sure I removed the marriage link. These marriages disappeared from the screen, but when I had Legacy renumber the MRINs these were not reused and showed up again. I am assuming these marriages were created when I imported my GEDCOM file from FTM for the Mac after I got my Windows computer and started using Legacy again. [LegacyUG] Filing paper documentation
Several years ago someone mentioned they filed by marriage number and one place given to purchase numbered dividers was Bindertek. I got some of them at that time, but genealogy kinda got shoved to the far back corner and I only recently began again. I ordered more dividers in the series that I need yesterday, and got a call from them this morning that they no longer carry those dividers because they don’t sell enough to make it profitable. He suggested another place, but didn’t know if they had them or not. If you file paper documents by number, how do you handle it? Do you use notebooks with dividers or file folders? Do any of you know of another company that might have collated sets of numbered dividers? My marriage numbers go up to about 1700 marriages. [LegacyUG] Index view
I have a Dell laptop and had my hands on the bottom of the keyboard when I did something and my display changed from landscape to portrait flipped. I got it changed back with no seemingly residual effects, except one. In Legacy when I go to Index View it is now double spaced. So far, I haven't found anything else that is different. Re: [LegacyUG] Error 91
I accidentally corrected the problem. LOL I was merging two files and had a few problems. Went ahead and did a Check Repair, and problem solved. Happy accident. Il East -Original Message- From: Michele/Support Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2015 11:16 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Error 91 Ila, Let’s try the simple stuff first. 1) Close Legacy, reboot your computer but don’t open Legacy back up yet. 2) In Windows navigate to the Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr folder and open it. Delete the FGS.usr file. 3) Now open Legacy back up and do a check/repair. Select File > File Maintenance > Check Repair. Click Proceed. If an error is found select No so that the check/repair will continue. If there are errors found, run the check repair again until there are no errors. If there are any errors that Legacy can't clear automatically, look at the log file that is generated and it will give you the information you need to clear the errors manually. Sometimes a simple reboot is all that it takes. If there is a problem in the FGS.usr file deleting it will take care of the problem. A check/repair is always a good idea when anything is amiss. 4) Now try generating a Family Group Report again. 5) If that didn't work then see the instructions here http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00234 6) If that doesn’t work then you need to send us an email via this form http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Problems.asp Make sure that you tell us what all you have done already to fix the problem so that we don’t repeat things. Thanks, another good idea. That's why I like to ask, people come up with so many ways to do the same thing that one of them should work for me. I do that anyway. I always scan documents to attach to entries plus as a way to be sure I have a backup copy. I do not keep my pictures in the Legacy folder, nor do I keep my data there. I have pictures under My Pictures and date in my documents under Genealogy. that way when I purchase a new computer and need to transfer my data, all I have to do is copy the documents and pictures folders. Saves a lot of time because I don't have to look in individual program's folders to find what I need to transfer. Re: [LegacyUG] Census Information was Entering birth years into Legacy
As an indexer for FamilySearch I can attest to the difficulty of getting names, etc. correct when indexing. Some of it is guess work because the handwriting is almost unreadable or the photocopy is almost unreadable. When the names are of ethnic origin, if you aren't familiar with that culture, its like transcribing code. When searching for individuals in the census, especially in FamilySearch, if you don't find them the first time think of how the name might have been misinterpreted and try again. [LegacyUG] Should I have Legacy renumber my database?
Thinking ahead to the time when I might upload my database to FamilySearch, and taking the advice to remove any undocumented people and or poor documentation, I am in the process of doing so. I made a copy of my database. I named the original wrenn - researching, and the copy wrenn researched. I am removing anyone that I have put in that does not have a source that almost anyone else could locate. I did leave a few in such as a trusted relative who provided information via his family group sheets. These where hand documented because he does not have a computer. I trust they are correct, but I will research them and put in the necessary source. Now, having given you the background information, when I get everything stripped down should I have Legacy renumber the individuals and marriages? I don't have a lot of documents, and I have shuffled them several times trying different filing systems, so renumbering would cause me no appreciable problems. I really don't have a reason for wanting to renumber other than there wouldn't be gaps in my "good" file.
