[LegacyUG] email issue

2016-06-22 Thread Oregon Rain
I am having to put a block on the legacy address because this morning I
had 873 emails from "Thank you" with the subject of "Your Roof is
covered" and 376 "Re" that came in over night. The plugged my email so
bad that the four real emails would not download.

Sorry! But this is way out of control!

I swear that I've used a date calculator within

Use the calander located right on their information

   Hi Charles,

It is something to do with the mailing list software not
  interpreting
the text of a submitted post, as far as I can see.

If I forget I'm writing a LUG post and type as I normally
  would, when I
receive my own copy of the post it will have those
  characters placed
where I had typed two spaces, as I normally do between
  sentences. If I
put one space (as there is at the start of this
  sentence), there's no
funny A. But if there are two spaces (as there are here,
  deliberately),
there is. (Now to hope that it behaves as predicted, and
  you see what I
   intend you to see!)

Just ignore it, it is meaningless here.

  wrote:

  Hi Dennis,

It depends on how you use the Master Source, whether in your particular
situation it is better to attach the image to the Master Source or the
Source Detail.

An example... you have your great-grandmother's birth certificate. Ask
yourself this question - do you set up a new Master Source for that
certificate alone, or do you use a Master Source that covers all birth
certificates for that country/state/county/whatever?

There isn't a right answer here, only the answer that works for you.

Some people will set up a new Master Source for each certificate they
acquire. We call that "splitting" on this mailing list; you end up with
a lot of Master Sources this way. In this situation you probably won't
use the Source Detail very much, and it's appropriate to attach an image
to the Master Source.

Other people will set up a Master Source for all birth certificates they
acquire of the same type, and then put the information specific to each
item in the Source Detail. In this situation, I'd attach an image to the
Source Detail, so that each citation has an image relevant to its use.
We call this "lumping" on this mailing list.

I tend to do a bit of both. When I first started entering sources, I set
up a separate Master Source for each certificate I had. Later on, when
I'd learned more and thought about what I wanted, I changed to using one
Master Source for all New Zealand birth certificates, and another for
all New Zealand birth registrations (a copy of the Registrar's book,
we're a bit different in this country!), and others for marriages and
deaths, and repeat for England, and Scotland, and for each state in
Australia from which I've acquired documents, and so on.

One day I might change all those early entries and get rid of the Master
Sources that cover one piece of paper alone, but then I may never get
around to that. Either way, the information is still stored and can be
properly interpreted by anyone reading my data.

Where I've cited a book, I set up a Master Source for the book as a
whole, and then in the Source Detail I put the information about which
page a piece of information came from. Here, I could put an image of the
book cover in the Master, and an image of a page in the Detail, if I so
desired.

So think about what works for you, and go with that. Keep asking
questions here - the program is very flexible, and there are usually at
least two ways of doing something. Which is right, depends on your
preferences and expectations.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy

Dennis Holtby said the following on 6/12/2014 16:13:

Okay folks, Newbie Dude here but, I'm seriously confused by all the
options available regarding Master Sources and Details.

Since it is possible to do in both places, is it best to attach copies
of documents (or pictures) to the "Master Source" or, as part of the
"Detail" (using the Source Writer), which is the best place to use to
add them? Specifically, I referring to attaching copies of
Birth/Death Certificates, Census Pages, etc.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dennis

There is no auto check setting for checking on updates.
There is an option on the Legacy Home tab under Options
Options Internet Options tab to "Allow Legacy to connect
to the internet"

If that's selected, it *should* show the update when you
open Legacy but sometimes it doesn't happen right away.
Also, if you leave Legacy running for a long time, it doesn't
necessarily update quickly.

You can click on the Updates heading to check as well.

RE: [LegacyUG] 1940 Census status - slightly off-topic

2012-04-02 Thread Oregon Rain
Smallest population, smallest census. Between the deep south and the northwest
we may have to wait until next year for our 1940 census.

It figures that the deep south would be the bottom of the heap. Interesting
that the opted to put the American Territories at the top of the list

I am also not able to duplicate the problem either and I haven't updated to the

I am using Windows 7, Legacy is on my C drive and I'm the administrator, data

I have a question about data entry in the Individual's Information window

I noticed some time ago that when I added a new person and attempted to
click on the + button to add a note or address for such things as the
Born, Died, or Buried entries, that the button did not react. That is, a sub
menu did not open to allow me to enter notes or info. It just ignored my
 mouse click on the +.

But if I saved the new individual, then reopened the individual's window,
the + buttons would work properly.

As a fairly new user, I thought maybe it was programmed this way for some
odd reason, although frustrating. At a Legacy users meeting yesterday I
found that no one else had noticed the issue.

In fact one of the users tried the example with no problem. I don't know
what operating system the user had.

I have the program loaded on a couple of computers and have separate family
files loaded, but have the same problem on each.

I've even taken the step of doing a new install on another computer never
used with Legacy with the original 7.5 disk. I can duplicate the same issue
with the little sample family file included. Straight forward install with
 no options changed.

These are all XP systems, current with all patches. Avg antivirus software
 disabled in the tests.

Hopefully the infected lister has seen this and will take steps to
resolve the issue by changing her password.

Most likely this will be the only email sent from her hijacked account

RE: [LegacyUG] Can't install update

I did this two updates ago. I started the update from the program and lost my
connection part way through the update. I lost the program as I had it! That
was a scary moment. Because I had the v.7 CD I installed that then did the
up-date. Regardless of whether you have the deluxe or the free side of Legacy,
you should be able also be able to go to the Legacy website and download the
up-date and then re-installed from there. Then everything should work properly.

Before I joined this list I wrote to support. And Dummy me had my tool bar set
so the icons were not showing. Thanks to support my little gray cells found
the problem.
Go to Options then to Customize. When the box opens click on OTHER. On the
right hand side you will see BUTTON BAR LOCATION. Click on top or bottom and
the icons will appear and the census research tool icon is on the end..
