Please do no post graphics to the LUG list!

Many of our listers still have slow connections or limited data rates.

I don't know about anyone else, but the inline graphics can really
mess up the formatting in my webmail as well.

Please review the guidelines on our website at
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp - there's a link to it at the

Re: [LegacyUG] Error in new version

2015-09-07 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Here is a dumb question before the group is finished with the discussion of the
check/repair.  I am fairly new to Legacy.  I use it only on my computer -- not
anything uploaded to the internet.  I don't attach any pictures or documents,
but only put things in the notes section.  Is there any reason for me to use
check/repair?

Thank you

a week. Thanks for the fast response and fix to the problem. I've been using
Legacy for years and you've come a long way.

If you want an improvement you should register your request by
submitting a suggestion using either the link on the Legacy Home tab in
the program or by using the Make a suggestion link in the Help Center
menu on our web site: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com. The more detail
you provide on how you want the report to format the d'Aboville numbers
the better. In fact you seem to want two changes:

1. A different format for the d'Aboville numbering on a Descendant Chart
2. Add d'Aboville numbers to the Descendant Book and/or Descendant
Narrative Book reports.

[LegacyUG] Reports using d'Aboville Numbers

2015-05-18 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
As long as we are talking about various reports with various numbers, one of
the reasons that I chose Legacy when I got a new computer and needed to change
my software, was because Legacy offered d'Aboville numbers.  I have a
(descendant) book of my family tree which used those.  It came out in 1950.  It
has a column for the number and then the name and information about that person
is in the second column.  You can tell by the number, just how the person fits
into the family.  For husbands who married into the family, there is an "h"
after the wife's number.  For the wife who married in, there is a "w" after the
husband's number.  A first wife is designated "w (1)" and the second wife is
designated "w (2)", etc..  It is a wonderful system.
Legacy uses d'Aboville numbers in the descendant chart, but there is no
separate column for the number, so it all merges together and is not so easy to
read.  Also, there is no option to use the d'Aboville numbers in a descendant
book if you wanted to include all of the information that you had about
individuals.  Wish Legacy would make improvements in the use of the d'Aboville
numbers.                         Priscilla

Hi Priscilla,

When you create web pages in Legacy, they are placed where you tell
Legacy where to put them - usually the hard drive of the computer you're
working on.

As others have said, they won't be online until you upload them to a site.

However, when you open any of the pages they will open in your web
browser - that's how they work. If you've got more than one browser
installed, they will open in the browser set as the default one unless
you specify for them to open in another.

When you've got a page from Legacy open in your browser, take a look at
the address bar - that will tell you where the page resides. If it is on
your computer, the address will start with c: or d: or something
similar. If it is online, it will start http://

If the address (also called a URL) is too long to show the whole line on
your screen, it may show the end or the beginning. If you want to see
the other end, click on the address (or press Ctrl-L) and then press the
Home key to see the beginning, or the End key to see the end.

Hope this helps.  :-)

Thanks for all of your answers, Charani.
Thank you for letting me know that the document is not online.  I use Chrome
for internet.  In order to go to the document where I had saved it in my
computer, I had to click on an icon that looked like the one for Chrome, so
figured that it was online.

I think I have figured out how to change the line length when using Text file.
I see that it has a box after those words with 80 in it.  I have changed that
number several times...now to 170.  It is far better.   I made the report with
the page in landscape and then copied it and pasted it into Word.  There are
still some things to fix once it is in Word, but at least that can be done.
If there are any easier ways or something else that I should know about how to

You can reset the line length yourself.

Everything on your computer and everything you use on your computer
has a default, which are the "factory" settings. You can pretty much
change those to whatever you want, so if the default line length is,
say, 60 characters, you can change that to 80 characters or whatever
you want.

> More than that, though, it seems like the document is online.

If you haven't physically uploaded your document to a website anywhere
using an upload program of sort, it is NOT online.

If you are composing the document on your computer, it's not going
anywhere.

If you are composing it on a blog site (eg Wordpress or similar),
then, yes, it will be online.

> Maybe I should have understood that before making it, but I did

What makes you think it is online?

> How do I remove it??

Since it's unlikely to be online you won't need to.

> I also tried the text file.  This also seems to keep all of the

Again you can reset the line length yourself.  Have a look in the
settings.  Look but don't do anything at first!  See what there is, then
change what you want to but remember what you've changed.  Legacy
is one of those lovely programs that allows you to reset to the defaults
if you get in a muddle :)

Bear in mind an HTML/RTF document is at least four times larger than
a plain text document.  You won't see all the coding on your computer
but it's there.

If your document isn't how you'd like, save it as it is, then make a
copy and
have a fiddle around with it to get it to be the way you want.

Nothing is online unless you sent the report to a web host. HTML is a
web page line format but the file Legacy creates is only on your hard

go on to the next line leaving a large space on the right side of the document.
More than that, though, it seems like the document is online.  Maybe I should

from my family to put all of this information online.  How do I remove it??
I also tried the text file.  This also seems to keep all of the text on the

Hi Priscilla,

You can save any of the book reports to .rtf which is rich text format which
will open in any word processor.

However, it sounds like you want a Descendant Chart with the option chosen to
pack information on one line.
This can be saved to either html or txt. Both can be opened in Word.
The Descendant Chart with the option to include marriage date and spouse's
parents, with format - pack information on one line is a great report.

These choices to save in other formats are below the Preview/Print button and
are made before you click the Preview button and then the Print button changes
into a Create button.

of the formats I see end up in a pdf, so that when I send it to my

Could someone please walk me through a way to do this?

[LegacyUG] Descendant Report - in Word, etc. ?

2015-03-04 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I have not asked a question in a long time, so I hope this will go to the right
place.
I would like to make what I call an Outline Descendant Tree -- something with
one person on each line plus date of birth, date of marriage, date of death --
but in a format that could be changed.  Most of the formats I see end up in a
pdf, so that when I send it to my cousin, she cannot add to it or subtract from
it.  If it were in Word or some sort of format like that, she could add to it
when children are born, or add other information that was important to her.
Could someone please walk me through a way to do this?
                    Thanks,                         Priscilla

I never receive my own e-mails, but they are in the archives, so I know that
everyone else has gotten them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree chart

2014-09-30 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I know that Yahoo has recently offered several new font sizes with "tiny" being
the default, I believe. It took me a while to figure out that I could go to
settings and get "small" back which works well for me...and most likely others
trying to read it!

Re: [LegacyUG] RUNTIME ERROR 5 again

2014-09-25 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I hate to be so out of it, but do these errors only happen when folks have
Legacy connected to the internet and Family Search or can these things happen
even when a person is just using Legacy within their own computer? I am
wondering what to worry about and what I don't need to even consider. I just
use the program within my computer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a PDF file to email

2014-09-23 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Hi Margaret,
When I save either a document, photo or a pdf, I rarely save it where the
computer would automatically save it. I choose a file -- "documents" sounds
like a good place for what you are saving or you could try a thumb drive that
you have connected. If you have a lot of pdfs for a particular family, make a
new folder in "documents" or on the thumb drive with the family name. Or maybe
you would rather make a file or folder there with the name "Legacy" and then
another file or folder within "Legacy" with the family name. That way you
could have several folders there with different family names with multiple
documents in them.
Perhaps you are wondering how to get to "documents". In my computer
there is an arrow pointing up next to the location that is originally offered.
Continue to go up until you find "This PC" which, at least in my computer, lists

desktop
documents
downloads
music
pictures
videos
and any thumb drive that you might have connected.

Note where it is that you file the pdf and then when you want to add it
to your e-mail, you will be able to go right to "documents" or the thumb drive
or wherever you have saved it.

I hate it when I cannot find something!!

[LegacyUG] Adding a spouse

2014-09-01 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I would like to add a wife to a man in my family tree. This is a first wife.

It seems that I cannot just type in the name...is that correct?

I have already put in the marriage date because I thought that might make it
easier to understand how to do this. Yes, I have looked at help, but did not
understand any of that either.

When I try to add the wife, I get a box asking if I want to add a new person or
link to an existing person. I want to link to the husband who is already in my
family tree...but I want to add a new person. Which one do I choose??

Thanks,
Priscilla

Re: [LegacyUG] Fwd: Descendant Narrative Book

2014-08-04 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Just a crazy notion from someone who has very little clue about Legacy, but
what if you copy the research notes to a Word document or something, delete the
research notes, print the DNB (pdf) checking to see if it comes out the way you
want it to, and then go back and copy from Word/document and paste the research
notes back to Legacy?  Hopefully Legacy cannot refer to the Research Notes if
they are not there.
   Good luck,

[LegacyUG] Backing up family file and what to do with the backup

2014-08-01 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I understand that it is a good idea to backup my family file on a separate
drive.  I have been able to do that.  It gives the family file name, date and
time, and that it is a compressed (zipped) file.

When I look in my hard drive, I see files that have a circle at the beginning
with an L in it.  The file type for those is Legacy Genealogy Software.

Then for some of my family files I also have GED, Text Document, and TC files.

For some other family files I have those 4 files plus FG file.

And for another, those 5 files plus a PPL file.

When I am looking at a family file in Legacy and wish to open another family
file, I am offered only the circles with the L -- the Legacy Genealogy Software
type of files -- not all of the type of files that are in the hard drive.

That seems to work and what I have added to a file seems to be there after
closing the file and opening it again.
*
What are all of these files -- GED, Text Document, TC, FG, and PPL ?
*
At what point do I need to use the compressed (zipped) file and how do I open
that ?
When I am using family file "B" and want to go to family file "A" which I have
saved, I look in the other drive and it does not show up.  There is no
possibility of finding a compressed (zipped) file.  That is not a type of file
that is listed to open.

Also, how many of these zipped files do other people keep?  Do you delete some
of the older ones after you've saved the next one?

Thanks,
   Priscilla

Re: [LegacyUG] Switch From FTM 2014

2014-07-29 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Thank you, Sherry.  I was able to find the detailed search tab and use your
instructions to find the number of notes.

Jay, you had asked about individuals and notes.  The file with 141 individuals
has 26 with notes.
The file with 491 individuals has 122 with notes.

Hmmm.  That seems like a plan.  I have done that on one note, but not left that

Hi Jay,
The most recent file that I downloaded into Legacy as a test was one of
my smaller ones -- 141 individuals.  Is there an easy way to see how many have
notes?  I don't know how to do that except to count.
One of my larger files has 491 individuals.
I would be glad to fix the smaller ones even if I had to deal with the
larger ones note by note.  Anything is better than nothing!  Thanks for
thinking on this!

2014-07-27 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I thought I would send this again since I have not received any answers.  I
would appreciate anyone's information on the subject -- getting rid of the
spaces within words in the notes sections when I move my family tree from
Family Tree Maker 2006 to Legacy 8. -- do I need to start over with the GEDCOM
or do I start with where I am in Legacy?  Either way, how do I tell Legacy to
make the words with the correct spacing?
 Thanks,

that have spaces in the middle of the words.  >From the information below, it
seems like I can continue with the tree that I have transferred to Legacy from
Family Tree Maker via a GEDCOM.  Is that true...that I don't need to delete the
tree and start over again importing the tree?
The Knowledge Base, as written below, says that I can tell Legacy to
change the method it is using and three choices are given.  First of all, which
of the three choices should I choose if I want to get rid of the spaces in the
middle of words, and then where do I find a place where I can tell Legacy to
change the method?  Please give me step by step/key by key instructions because
I am not at all familiar with where to find things in Legacy.  I feel that I
have looked through the tool bar and have not been able to find anything at all
that would have anything to do with spaces in the middle of words in the notes
section.
   Thanks,
 Priscilla

I switched from FTM, but 2006 or somewhere back there.  I am still in the
process of moving over to Legacy 8 via GEDCOM.  My trees are much smaller, and
I am certainly not a Legacy architect.  I am just bumbling along.  So far, I
have noticed that in the General Notes, there are a lot of spaces in the middle
of words that need to be fixed.  In trying the Descendant Narrative Book
Report, some information comes out in a strange and less than complete form.  I
believe it was the area in FTM where you could put in "Religion", "Residence",
"Occupation", or "Education", etc. and then a date and information.  In the
Legacy report I get "She had a religion between 1943 and 1950.  She had a
religion between 1975 and 1995."  "He had a residence between 1943 and 1965."
I figured that my only option was to rewrite this information and put it into
the General Notes.  If anyone has any better ideas, I'd love to hear them.  I
don't have tons of this
sort of information in my trees, but it would be easier if I did not have to
rewrite.

Hi,
Is there a way when adding a marriage, to have both spouses male or both
spouses female?  I have not figured out how to do that.

If not, is that something being considered to add to the options available?

[LegacyUG] d'Aboville Numbers

2014-07-04 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I have deleted the previous e-mails concerning this, so I cannot simply reply,
but here is what Brian said on the subject:

The Help is incorrect. It is the Descendant Chart not the Descendant
Narrative report that can use d'Aboville numbers.
I have submitted a problem report to have the Help amended. There is an
enhancement request to add the d/Aboville numbering system to the
Descendant Narrative and Descendant Book reports but that is still
outstanding. Brian
Customer Support
Millennia Corporation
br...@legacyfamilytree.com http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com

My additional question/thought is, how can it be requested that when the
d'Aboville numbering system is added to the Descendant Narrative and Descendant
Book reports, that there would be an option to put the numbers into their own
column on the left side of each page, with the information about the person in
a separate column on the right side of each page?  The way it seems to be now,
the numbers are just before each name and do not stand out very well from the
name and information about each person.

I don't know if it is just Support people who make requests for enhancements or
how that works.

Thanks,
  Priscilla

[LegacyUG] Two family trees open at once

2014-06-27 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Is there a way to have two Legacy family trees open at once on my computer?  I
have a number of family trees and would like to have two open at once -- side
by side -- on my screen.  I realize that having more than one tree is not what
many of you do, but that's the way it is here -- at this point, anyway -- and
has been working well.  I was able to do that with my previous software, but
cannot figure out yet with Legacy.

[LegacyUG] d'Aboville numbers

2014-06-23 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Hi,
I would like to do family reports in descendant order using the d'Aboville
numbers.  I have a family tree from 1950 which uses this format and find it
very easy to understand the connections between the family members.  I would
like to include all of the information that I have about the family members --
events, etc..  I would be interested to hear if others have used this numbering
system along with the Legacy software.  My ideal report would have the
d'Aboville number in a column on the left side of the page with the remainder
of the information -- name, dates, events -- in a second column on the right
side of the page.
    Thanks,
  Priscilla

[LegacyUG] Receiving no e-mails from the Legacy User Group

2014-06-23 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Hi,
I am new to Legacy.  I have tried to join the Legacy User Group several
times.  Maybe I am a member now...but I am not sure.  I have yet to receive a
message from the group that any of you have sent.  I see that some of you are
having problems with getting messages from certain people.  I finally found the
Archives tonight so was able to read some of those.  I check my spam box
several times a day, so I am not receiving anything at all from this group.
I will wait to see if this message gets through.  If it does, then I will
ask some of my other questions on how things work.
   Thanks,
   Priscilla
