That's great thankyou Cathy.
I will give that a go and probably make a note of those that need to be
imported. Could I then create a file of only those needled and import those as
a gedcom.

Valerie

If you want to read through the files to see which records to keep, use Split
Screen View with your new Master on the left and one of the other files on the
right.
I'd open both to Index View and sort Index View the same way so you can see if
there are people in the right file that aren't in the left file. If there are,
you can drag and drop from one file to the other - but you have to move from
Index View to Family View to do that.

If you choose to import the other files into your new Master then yes you'll
need to use merge and yes you'll have 1000s of records to merge. There isn't a
way to set the options to cut that down much. I doubt you'll be able to use the
Intellishare option as you seem to have been uploading and downloading from
Ancestry - but you could try.

Cindy,
I agree with Bob.

However, if you can't save backup zips to your external drive or copy
files to your external drives, unless the external drives are full, I
suspect you need to consult a computer guru. There must be something in
either your computer settings or your security software settings
interfering with that process.

If you are really working from the copy of your database on the C drive,
that is the latest version. Backups are for emergencies.
If you open it from the thumb drive then it will save to the thumb drive
as you add data and that's your latest version.

[LegacyUG] V8 Windows 7 - notes for a Master Location

2014-01-19 Thread Valerie B Garton
I am doing a OneName Study for Hall's in Ireland and am having trouble
knowing where all the townlands are so I came up with what I thought was a
good idea BUT:

Master Location: Cloonagh, Owenduff, Wexford, Ireland

Notes: Cloonagh is a townland of 326 acres in the County of Wexford, Barony
of Shellbourne, Civil Parish of Owenduff, PLU of New Ross and Province of
Leinster

BUT I cannot get the notes info to print. Do I have to alter something
somewhere or put the information that I have in notes somewhere else ?

Valerie,

Firstly never ever delete a file without knowing what it is for. So, if it is
still in your bin I would restore it.

Yes, the usr files are important, they contain your settings. On entering the
particular routine it relates to eg. reports, Legacy will regenerate the file,
but with the Legacy defaults, rather than yours.

You get that message if you have chosen a destination file that already exists.
You probably want to choose NO and go back and enter a different filename (or
you could use the same filename but in a different directory).

The only time you would choose YES would be if you had created a partial export
and then wanted to go back and add some additional different records to the
initial export.

Hi Jay,

Help me out here, what is the norm for ‘calculated date’, and when/how do the
rest of you use the term? I’ve not seen it used for another particular
purpose, so I am interested in knowing how you understand it and what others
are expecting to see by that. Would you use ‘Est’ as a guess/fill in date?
I also use FTM and the default is to change circa/cir/c/Est/ to Abt. I want to
differentiate between that terminology and my guess.

I don’t like to leave missing birth dates (in particular) and will most often
put in an estimated date or a range (also an estimate/guess) to better sort the
individual.

Bob,

You do the rest of us a disservice by using Cal for a date that is not a
calculated date. Any data that comes from you will assumed to be a calculated
date.

However you use the program within your PC. and is best for you
..is great.

But if you are going to stray from the expected or norm, please take into
consideration that others will never know you changed the expected data.

Age 21 in 1911 census born abt/est 1890

Died age 47 in 1865 born abt/est 1818

Child born 1867 with no marriage for parents - marriage est/abt 1866 -

child F born est/abt 1841 M born est/abt 1854 - source: birth dates assuming
parents aged 26 and 22 at time of possible first born child

Any more suggestions please ?

See reply from Ken McGinnis dated 7 Dec 2013 in the archives to see how to fix
this same problem. Several of us have had the same problem.

[LegacyUG] Can I do this and if so how ?

2012-05-10 Thread Valerie B Garton
Good morning on a beautiful day in Sydney where I have just joined the list
in the hope that someone will be able to give me some suggestions please.

I am doing a OneName study and am wanting to be able to add Dublin post
codes and to be able to search these for all those in the database.

For example I have 1 36 L7; 1 35 K7; 1 43 K8; 2 44 L10; 2 43 K8; 6 49 K12; 7
42 H8

Where should I add these and how would I then search all of them ?

I hope I have made myself clear.

Cheers from Valerie in sunny Sydney
