[LegacyUG] Gedcom files

2018-05-12 Thread aj.rudge
HI.

I am trying to create a gedcom file of my family file from Legacy 9.00 for
importing into Family search and Ancestry.

I Have tried using various file types eg - Basic, 5.5.1 gedcom while it
saves it as *.ged, file extension I am unable to open the saved file to
view it before importing into Family Search and Ancestry.

I am asked to find a file from the app store or use a microsoft app that
will open it. But none of these work either.

Thanks

In legacy 7 it is Report, Books and Other, Relationships

Legacy 9, Reports menu, Other Reports select Relationships from dropdown menu

Hi

is there a way (or a trick) to form a list of people and each one's
relationship to some starting person?

It would need to be the "primary" relationship as shown on the Family view
screen, not any of the others shown in the Relationship Calculator.

By "form" the list I mean by focus group, or tag, or hashtag or anything else.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Gedcom files uploading to web site.

2018-06-12 Thread aj.rudge
Hi

I would like to upload my FT to Ancestry and other websites as a Gedcom
file.

I am reasonably certain I have stripped the records of any notes or sources
by using the privacy tools on legacy.

However I note that the addresses entered in the birth, death and burial
records are still showing

I would like to know if these addresses will stripped or removed when the
file is uploaded.

I know that dates of persons still living are stripped and names marked as
private.

Hi

I Had the same problem: You need t oo to Customise on bottom right of the
window.

There are more options there.

Also look at options in the top right.

I also use a programme called gen viewer which allows you to see what will be
exported.

Regards.

A question:

How do you prevent the notes from being exported?

I’ve done as Cathy suggested
Customize-> Export items-> Export these items and removed NOTE and MNOTE
without success, all notes are still exåported

So now I use "brute force" with Notepad++-, I’ve created a macro that removes
all lines starting with a digit, followed by a space and then NOTE, CONT or
CONC .

Search for ^\d\s\b(NOTE|CONT|CONC)\b.*\R

Repalace with nothing

it works and my gedcom shrinks from 578529 to 491189 lines

You don't use privacy to strip out notes etc from a gedcom, you use the Gedcom
customise options. They control which gedcom tags are exported. See the
Customise button on the right. This includes an exclude option for
address/phone and Notes of various kinds. I don't know whether that is just
mailing addresses or event addresses.
It's true that Ancestry etc will privatise the living for you but you can
choose not to include the living in your gedcom using the options in the
Privacy section in the Gedcom export. I think this is a better option.
When exporting for Ancestry I generally just include the vital events with
their sources. You can do this by using Basic and then adding the tags SOUR and
PAGE.
I also go to the second tab headed Other Options on the main export screen and
uncheck to override source options as I don't want to include my source detail
text OR sources that I have chosen not to include in reports.

If you don't have a gedcom viewer program and find the gedcom difficult to
understand when opened in Notepad (as it's a plain text file), you can import
your gedcom to a new Legacy file to see what you are actually exporting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mass deleting entries

2019-07-22 Thread aj.rudge
Robert.

Two ways:

1. Unlink them from your from their families so keeping them in your
database.
2. Tag the ones you want deleted an then delete them.

Either way you need to spend time making sure you unlink or delete the correct
ones.

Cheers

Hello

I hope that you can help me on this. I have 1,000's + of entries that I did not
enter in my tree. How do I delete masses of these people? My tree consist of
27,000+ people and about 3,000+ are wrong. My DNA shows that I am 100% french
and these entries are English and whatever.

How can I delete these people without deleting relatives sprinkled among them?
Thank you for your time.

John

It is in the Legacy Webinar File.

You need a webinar subscription to view it.

I did not receive the email until yesterday (5 December in Australia). I have
since opened all the Legacy News links since June, but I cannot find any
mention of the ChatGPT webinar.

You simply missed it in the list in Legacy News. You need a webinar
membership to see TechZone videos. Very rarely one is made free for a
short time like recent one on Two Factor Authentication.

I just watched it. It was interesting but I don't feel a need to put
it on an immediate To-Do list.

[LegacyUG] File savng and charting

2023-12-26 Thread aj.rudge
Somehow, When I open Legacy it doesn't give the option of which file to open
I need go to a list of files then open the one I want to work on.

Also when I close legacy it doesn't give me the option of saving to back up
or just closing.

Finally when I went to create a chart the charting facility also did not
open up.

I think my data files are in a different place in that they don't seem to be
correctly linked.

Thanks for your help in advance.

What file, if any, opens when you open Legacy is controlled by Options >
Customise 1.2 The folder Legacy expects your data file to be in is the one you
specify at Options > Customise 6.1.
You do not have to use the Legacy Default of ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Data\ folder If you have your data file in folder that is syncing with the
Cloud, make sure it is keeping local copies on your computer.
The Documents folder may be in OneDrive depending on your OneDrive settings. If
OneDrive is on your computer, you often have to check regularly whether it is
keeping local copies and whether it has your Windows Documents folder inside of
it or not. It will have a Documents folder probably but it may not be the one
Windows is recognising. I don't sync my Documents folder with OneDrive so the
one Legacy uses is not in OneDrive but there is still a Documents folder there.
Your Legacy settings are stored in ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\
folder in whichever Documents folder is being recognised by Windows. If you
move the Legacy Family Tree folder or rename it, it will be recreated with
Legacy defaults.

I'd start by restarting your computer. That's a Restart which is a complete
clearing our of memory and starting. Unless you've turned off Fast Start, the
operating system is simply hibernated when you ShutDown.

The Restart may solve your Charting issue. If not, you may need to reinstall
Legacy. I'd first try reinstalling without uninstalling first.
Note Charting settings are held in ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\LegacyCharting So this is another thing that will be mixed up if the
\Legacy Family Tree\ folder has been moved or renamed or is syncing with a
cloud without a local copy being kept on the computer.

If Legacy isn't asking you to backup your file when you exit, then either you
haven't made any changes to the database or you have lost the setting in
Options > Customise 12.5 on the Prompts/Reminders tab.

Hope that helps.
If it doesn't, contact Support. supp...@legacyfamilytree.com
