You can remove Picasa without losing any photographs. They work with
any of your photos anywhere on your computer, but only show and organize them,
never delete except at your command.

None of the programs, that I know about, move your photos around or
change anything unless you command them to do so. Photoshop is expensive,
Paint Shop less so, Breezebrowser still less and Irfanvue and Picasa free.
Irfanvue is more direct and immediately learnable than Picasa.

If you use Photoshop, look at LightRoom, also by Adobe which is what
professional photographers use. It leaves everything on your computer, but
allows you to create myriad albums of using the any of your photos, even if
they are already in another LightRoom album, without ever moving them from
where they are on your computer.

Of course, all the metadata, captioning, etc, too.

GREETINGS, ALL

I have no opinion about the ability (or not) of Legacy to 'source' photographs.
But I DO have an opinion about the best way to provide source info for a
photograph; put the source information in the image metadata.

Metadata is the data about the data image; the text information that
accompanies each image, JPEG or whatever. The metadata allows us to attach
everything from our street address to the subject of the photo to the technical
info about the photograph … to the source of the photo. I believe any useful
information associated with an image has a place somewhere in the metadata.

Most modern image processing or image viewing programs allow access to the
metadata, yet too few of us use this important feature of digital imaging …
myself included. I know I should type the stuff into the appropriate fields but
too often I grow bored and move on to more exciting things. Doesn't matter if
you follow the approach of Elizabeth Shown Mills or not; just put something in
the metadata that will allow someone else to know where you found the image
(even if it is from your personal collection of photographs).

Bottom line; put sourcing in the metadata no matter what other sourcing you may
do !!!

Roxio has a long history of thefts of other programs resources. I'm
surprised they are still in business. They are also unlikely to help you fix

Of MS Answers advice, transferring to a new user setup seems bestl--but

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox

2014-10-16 Thread grayscot2

I don't use Dropbox for Legacy, but I do use it for Zoot XT, an
information processor. The solution there is to set up a dummy folder on each
computer for Zoot to save to as well as it's own folder databases. Then the
dummy folder is put on Dropbox. What is saved to Zoot is smart foldered to the
dummy. Dropbox syncs then only with the dummy folder, affecting the live Zoot
folders/databases only after syncing is complete.
Zoot XT is a set of very flexible smart databases on a stable engine Legacy
developers might take a look at.

My Legacy has only about 1400 records so easy to back up when doing
regular drive backups, but for Bob's or other's much larger number of records
it would be much faster and safer to backup just Legacy to Dropbox and forget
syncing.

 Hi Ron,

I totally agree about not having the live file on the Cloud. I have only a

backup at any time, even with the file open on Legacy. That takes about 5
seconds to copy (2+ hours to sync!), so I will do that before attempting
anything other than data entry on Legacy - much quicker than using Legacy's
backup feature. Of course one could do that type of backup to any other
 folder on their computer.

It seems that many do have there working/live files on Dropbox, I hope they
keep a very up to date copy on their own computer.

It is not advisable to have your live file in Dropbox or Google Drive or any
of the other cloud based storage systems. What you can do reliably is to
place the zipped backup files in the cloud drive and then restore the file
as needed on another computer from the cloud storage. Using the live file
on a cloud device requires a method to insure that the file has been sync'ed
completely before accessing it. With a zip file, it will not open unless it
is intact so a partial zip file should not open. Side benefit is that the
zipped files will be smaller than the live database and the other associated
files that Legacy uses. I agree with other comments that the problem is not
with differences between Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8. I regularly use my
Legacy data on all those Windows versions without any problems and move the
database by placing the zip backup files in Google Drive.

Ray,

I understand you are using Legacy 8 and have installed it on both computers
from a disc. It sounds as if you have updated the program on the desktop but
you haven't updated it on the laptop.
Therefore when you try to open your family file on the laptop, you are getting
a message saying you need a later build.
Update the program on the laptop (either from the Home Tab OR by downloading
the Standard version from the website and running it) and your problem should
be over.
Note although you download the Standard Free version from the website, it is
the same installation file for the Deluxe. The difference is that the Customer
Number unlocks more features.

I'm not sure why people were telling you to install Legacy 7. Confused I think
by you saying that both computers were running Windows 7.

This is a problem common to many of us, whatever the source. So I'll
try to be helpful and not just suggest that it is somehow your fault, Stanley.
Don't try any brute force uninstalls. You'll only leave junk in your registry.

You need that install.log, so install Legacy 8 again. Then instead of
relying on the uninstall in the control panel, go to the Legacy 8 program file
probably in C:\program files (86)\Legacy 8 and click on unwise.exe. It should
uninstall at that point. Now you should be able to be able to install it and
bypass suggestions that it might not have installed. It is a good program once
you get past a few hurdles.

Hi all,

A few days ago I reported the problems I was having with the update to
8.0.0.427 on this machine (Win7-x64).
Today I tried uninstalling Legacy8 using control panel. Again I see a Windows
error from the Program Compatibility Assistant, and I selected the option to
use recommended settings. But the program did not uninstall - it remains
listed in Programs and Features. When I try to uninstall it again, there is a
message box which says Could not open INSTALL.LOG file from Wise Uninstall.

I've done brute force removals of applications before, so I will be able to
clean up my system. I had high hopes for version 8, but my experience leaves me
dismayed and disappointed.

Sorry about the confusion with the path names. Apparently my tabbing
didn't work as I thought it would.
The directory structure is
\Genealogy
\Genealogy\Documents\
\Genealogy\Documents\FamilyName\
\Genealogy\Documents\FamilyName\FirstName (BirthYear) - if needed.

The longest pathname would be 45 characters if I can count right. The
max is supposed to be 256.

Doing this allows me to keep all relevant documents and photos in a way
that I can instantly find them. That last line is the longest you will
have.

For my own reasons, I duplicate the structure for Legacy use. I could
simply point to the Genealogy folder in Legacy, but I keep a lot of
documents that do not necessarily need to be used as source material.
They are there to provide additional historical information. Since I
was a history major in college, I tend to keep things that others might
find insignificant for their purpose.

In the Legacy PHOTO structure, I only keep the WEB sized JPG's of my
photo's. For the most part, I scan a photo to a TIFF file. This is in
the \Genealogy\Photo\ area. I then use Photoshop Elements to add info
to the IPTC data. This is just like writing on the back of a picture.
I then save this twice. Once as the standard TIFF file, then once with a
-EDIT after the name. The first file is never, ever, touched. The
second file is used for any editing that is needed and saved as a final
TIFF file. Once all that is done, I will save it as JPG. This file is
still rather large but will be OK to email to someone else. I will then
crop the photo to a head shot or something similar and SAVE for WEB.
This allows me to take a 1.2 mb file and reduce it to about 350-450 k.
This is what gets stored in the Legacy photo file and, eventually, to
the web.

For my backups, I use COBIAN to backup both the Genealogy Directory and
the Legacy directory, Each goes to a different external hard drive.
Once a week, I take an image copy of those hard drives. Of course, I do
a standard backup of my database every time I shut down Legacy.

Other people have vastly different ways of doing things. This is just
the scheme I worked out years ago when God was a child and I was still
in knee pants. My first software package was Brothers Keeper on a DOS
machine with 2 floppy drives.

I hope this helps with your thinking. There are as many ways to
organize as there are people. In the end, it is what works for you that
really matters.

Oh, if you haven't guessed, I'm a belt and suspenders guy.

I use a directory structure for my images, one for photos an one for
documents. I actually use two identical structures; one for permanent
storage and one for use with legacy. Not every document nor every photo
is used within Legacy.

So - \Genealogy
\Documents
\FamilyName
\Photos
\FamilyName
\LegacyData
\Documents
\FamilyName
\Photos
\FamilyName

In the Legacy Photos directory I store only WEB format JPG files. These
are usually never more than 450K. I keep my originals in the GENEALOGY
set as TIFF format.

One reason I don't use the Media Center gathering tool is that even in
reduced format, my Legacy Photos take nearly 3GB. If copied to a single
directory I would now have 6 GB out of my precious HD space.

My LegacyData directory is on its own 300 GB drive. I do an image copy
of this drive once a week. I do a backup of the working database every
time I close legacy. This goes to Dropbox.

Wes

I'm just setting up a media directory and can't imagine the amount of
time it must take to find a .jpg in one large folder, but equally can't imagine
how you avoid exceeding path limits with sub-folders on the one hand or work
with folders for each family in one long directory of peer folders.

Wes, are those peer folders or are the FamilyNamefolders you list child
or sub-folders under LegacyData? They must be peer folders or the paths would
be too long but sounds like that would be a long directory with all the
FamilyNames you must have and take a long time scrolling to file one or another
set.

And why not keep the \Geneology originals in name subfolders on your
main hard drive or an external one if you don't have the space on a hard
drive--both backed up just as you do now.

Chris,

I appreciate the link.  Like the author, I use both Onenote and Evernote.  I do
find Onenote to be a far superior program as I am more interested in organizing
than I am in clipping.  There is another well-know genealogy program who's text
editor accepts notes from Onenote without any issues.  They have an option to
strip all formatting from pasted text.  Since Legacy is by far a superior
program, I have no doubt that the Legacy programmers could  redo their text
editor to work the same way.  In my opinion, Onenote is the best note
organizing program and Legacy is the best genealogy program.  I prefer using
the best, not the second best so I am hoping that the Legacy folks can fix
this issue.

I find Onenote to be far superior to Evernote, therefore I would like to find a

I hope you don't mind my joining this thread. Though not really a one name
study, I have a reasonably large file and have not done a 'merge' of a new file
for some time now, for the very reason that you have found.

A cousin and I work together on our tree and we regularly exchange complete
updated files. We tag each new addition or change then, when I receive the
updated file, I do not try to merge it, but look for the tagged names and enter
the new information. I also receive other files/trees in other formats.

This is my method for merging, remembering that everyone finds their own style.

1. Create a new Legacy file from the updated gedcom and tag everyone. (In my
file exchange with my cousin the names are already tagged.) This also allows me
to clean up the file or edit it before merging.
2. Open your main file in Legacy and the new file using Split Screen (I have
them side by side)
3. Look for common names then copy the updated/new information to the main
file. I do this one by one, family by family, or the complete descendant line
if I have a common person. You can also drag the person/family/descendant line
to the main file.
4. Untag those copied/merged. This can be done in the new file just prior to
the copy/merge to save you from untagging in both files. If you have the tag
showing in your index it is easy to look to see which are not yet merged.
5. Continue until you have no more names tagged in your new file.

You can stop/start, compare names/lines side by side, at any time and much
easier than the Legacy merge window. This allows me to update tags that I use
for certain lines and I can also set the privacy settings, if needed, as I go.

I primarily copy descendant lines as there is less likelihood of another
connection. I will scan through the descendants and may compare the names to my
main file before the merge. If I have ancestors of, say, a new wife, I will be
brave and copy her ancestors in the same fashion.

My file also has many names that are the same. I have not used the 'Merge
Duplicates' feature for a few years, perhaps it has matured to where it is more
reliable. I do find that I still end up with some duplicates, or are they there
from earlier work? I feel my work is too valuable to mess up by merging a bunch
of incorrect, though common, names. Legacy's new feature in V8 of showing
possible duplicates after entering a new person is very welcomed, but I do get
a lot that are not really duplicates.

Hope this will give you some new ideas.

lines – descendants of Edward Nealand/Kneeland of Ipswich and the descendants

have 30 or so lines of descent from Kneeland Irish immigrants of the 1800’s
that I group under Tag 3.  And also several African-American Kneeland lines and
a variety of undetermined/unattached lines that I don’t have tagged, but could

Another tool that would appear to apply but that I haven’t really explored yet

Mary, Ron,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to this software and don't fully
understand the best way to do things yet.

In Legacy Deluxe 8.0, I tag unrelated individuals and then create a search for
that tag in the Name List. I'm currently experimenting with adding fields to
the 2nd and 3rd lines of List Report Options to get a format I like. I think
this will give me enough information - Names, birth, death, etc. - to be able
to screen for new individuals or relationships while away from my computer in a
library.

Since Legacy is a computer (as opposed to server based, I haven't tried DropBox
yet) based program, I'd like to have printed material to refer to on trips to
libraries to aid in research.

I will look at the Event reports also.

Is there a way to print multiple Individual Reports at once, using tags?

Thanks,

Ted

For you information, the “1,7884::30370810” number, and its like, typically
come from a gedcom file exported from an ancestry.com family tree. This number
is ancestry’s way of linking an individual’s event in an ancestry family tree
to the source record in ancestry.com’s databases. The “7884” represents the
particular database (in this case the 1910 United States Federal Census) and
the number after the :: represents the individual record within that database.
When you export a gedcom from ancestry.com the record will look something like
this:

1 RESI

2 DATE 1963

2 PLAC Mooroopna North, Victoria, Australia

2 SOUR @S-411220237@

3 _APID 1,1207::90856601

When you then import that record into Legacy, Legacy places the _APID number
into the FilingRef field in the tblSX (Source Detail) table which is then
displayed as theFile ID in the Source Detail Screen.

Interestingly, and usefully (at least for me), if you export a gedcom file from
Legacy which contains these _APID numbers in the FilingRef field, and then
import that gedcom (after some minimal and simple manual editing) into a family
tree in ancestry.com, ancestry will automatically re-establish the links to the
relevant source database and individual record.

I hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Help

2014-01-03 Thread grayscot2

The online Support offers this advice on uninstalling:
--
2. Or, open the Start menu and go to the list of all programs on your computer.
Open the Legacy 8.0 folder and click on Uninstall Legacy 8.0.

3. Or, optionally you can browse to C:\Program Files\Legacy8\RemoveLegacy.exe
and run the uninstall tool.

Source:
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00677/12/Install-Uninstall/How-do-I-uninstall-Legacy-Family-Tree-8.0.html
--

On the StartAll programsLegacy 8 listing, there is no folder, only
the shortcut to start the program, on my machine. If that's everyone else's
experience, this should be changed.

But the alternative suggestion, 3.--if you aren't missing the
install.log--works well.

The Control Panel route sometimes fails, erasing the install.log. If
it does, re-install, and follow 3. above.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Partnerships/Marriages

2013-12-26 Thread grayscot2

I'd like to up the count for including provisions for same sex
marriage, significant others, poly-amorous, etc.

But also, switching to a different underlying database program.
Anything so fragile as to need constant check/repairs is far too fragile. I've
used Dbase3, Visual Fox Pro and a number of free-form databases that never
required this. Zoot for instance is a free-form database PIM that is arguably
just as complex or moreso than Legacy, but I've never had to check or repair
its many separate smart databases, and in 20 years, through disk failures,
crashes, and power failures/surges that burnt out everything else, cloud sync
failures, have never lost an item.

So if you have to re-do the program anyway--and with Utah going
same-sex marriage, you will surely have to--get a stabler database/file system.

We are keeping count somewhat, but as Leonard wrote quoting Ken,
it's a major ripping apart of the basic design of Legacy and would be
very time consuming for the programmers. Not only would they have to
restructure Legacy, they would also have to re-code all the other
options based on the restructuring - not to mention the trickle-down

[LegacyUG] Research Freezes

2013-12-19 Thread grayscot2

On going to Resarch and clicking on Preliminary Survey, the sources for
this and the suggested sources are given numbers, but the program freezes. It
can be closed only by the X in the tray preview in Win 7. Version 366. The
rest of the program seems working OK until I click on the Preliminary Survey.

It does it on another file as well, yet I'm sure I got past this point
with an earlier version and had a number of interesting sources to look at.

Has anyone else experienced this or guess what might be causing it?

Alt - tab pops up so Notepad items I have in the tray but were not
behind the program. I just start the program, go to Research and first click I
make locks it up.

This is after I have put it through File check, Repair, list and
compact with nothing in the log or any complaints other than a half-dozen
sentence changes in Events. I've used Fox Pro and Visual Fox Pro and DB3
databases and never had to check, repair those unless major corruption had
occurred and then you were pretty much out of luck anyway.

But I'll take your word for Access and I'll check with support.

Thank you.

There is a problem with anything causing a freeze.

I haven't seen this freezing myself and I think
that's what Jay is saying - they didn't see the freeze either.

The program can sometimes appear to freeze
because a secondary window has opened behind
instead of in front of the primary window. Using
Alt + Tab to cycle through open programs
stopping when you get back to Legacy can cure
this as the hidden window comes to the front.

Re File Maintenance in Legacy. The Legacy
database is a Microsoft Access database. These
databases need regular maintenance. You do that
from the File Ribbon - File Maintenance -
Check/Repair. You need to do it regularly or you
will have problems. It's not the cure for all ills but it cures a lot.

For this sort of freezing issue if Alt + Tab
doesn't solve it are probably best taken direct to Support.

Disregard, I fixed my problem.    I was getting errors when doing three things

I did some reading in the support page and found a link to a Microsoft kb that
had a fix for a bad or corrupt registry entry.    I tried it and it fixed all
three problems.

It didn’t fix my problem with the Geo Database. During its installation it

The new update we just posted should fix the problem that a couple of you have
seen where Legacy is unable to find the GeoDB.gdb even though you have
downloaded and installed the new one.

If you are one of the people who have had this error please:

1. Download and isntall the Geo Database again from this page:

message ‘INSTALL.LOG.FILE. missing. I went to step 2, and deleted the
Legacy.exe, still no luck.

I went to Windows 7 Control Panel, Uninstall, it’s not listed.

I went to ‘All Programs’, Legacy to see if there was a drop down folder
attached, there is no drop down folder, it only opens the program. Do I have to
use a 3rd party uninstall tool?

Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread grayscot2
Sherry/Judith

I think her problem is that 7.5 is not uninstalled yet, just 7, unless
I'm wrong about that. Even if she deletes the 7.5 folders and runs cc, my
experience is that it will leave junk that may not affect L8 but will affect
the running of her machine down the line. If she has 7.5, do a re-install of
that to get an install.log, then use unwise.exe to uninstall, custom option, ok
all requests to uninstall all features. Her data files will not be affected,
but never hurts to copy somewhere else.

Legacy v7 and v8 have different install folders. v7.5 won't install over v8. I
recommend CCleaner by Piriform for cleaning out the registry, but the Legacy
uninstall generally does a pretty good job of doing that.

Judith, after uninstalling Legacy, the c:\Legacy folder remains in order to
protect your data, saved settings, media, webpages, etc - anything that was
changed or added during your use of Legacy is not deleted.

If you're sure that everything is out of the c:\Legacy folder that you want to
save, just delete the folder.

I reinstalled Legacy 7, and was able to uninstall it. However, I still have
Legacy 7.4 in my C:drive with no INSTALL.LOG.FILE, is there a solution. If I
delete it all, all the files under Legacy in the C:drive and then clean the

I don't want to mess up legacy 8, but I can reinstall that if needed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread grayscot2
It's not about where 7.5 and 8 install their files.

7.5 has a known problem. When you hit uninstall on the Control Panel,
it hangs. If you wait a while then click again it tells you to wait or
disappears. It may uninstall some files--certainly the install.log. But then
uninstalling in Control Panel or in Programs will not work without install.log.
Re-installing returns install.log, but even then Control Panel, even
uninstall.exe wouldn't work for me and I had to re-install AGAIN to get
install.log back. Only when I used unwise.exe and Custom with an install.log
present was I able to rid of the thing. My guess is that like myself and
others, that's what Judith is up against. Tech Support doesn't seem to know or

What is tech support supposed to admit.  When the majority of users have been
able to uninstall 7.xx without any issue, I fail to see what tech support is
supposed to admit.  It always amuses me when one out of X number of users have
a problem with an uninstall (or install) and automatically it is the fault of
the developer.  I would venture to say, if it was a deficiency in the
installer/uninstaller the developer is using, then there would be a much
greater percentage of people complaining about problems.  That does not seem to
be the case.

[LegacyUG] Organizing Data Files

The sub-directory Data under Legacy Family Tree, wherever you keep

I'd like to put all the files for each tree in a Data sub-folder, but
the location option has to be set to just one sub-folder: Legacy Family
Tree\Data. Won't all the files and backups get dumped into Data on closing,
even if I open them from each of the trees sub-folders in Data.?

Prescott,

You can create subfolders as you wish. The location option (I assume you are
referring to 6.1) is simply a default location for NEW family files. Nothing
more.

If you create subfolders under Legacy Family Tree\Data and move your various
family files as appropriate, Legacy will see those locations and remember them.

Remember also to set option 1.2 to define which file you want to open on
start-up (last one used, present a list, or always open a specific file)

Sherry,

OK, the solution was to get a different richtx32.ocx, put that in

running Win7, 32 bit; L8 is 32 bit but runs in my 64 bit Win 7. Which is the

The version of richtx32.ocx I originally had from Windows and later
from Legacy was much larger than the 199 or 200 kb than I found by googling.

There is no source for downloading it in the Legacy article you quote,
Sherry, and there is a typo in the command given for registering in
system32--written as systemS32.

Following is the source of the Richtx32.ocx that worked:

Fix for RICHTX32.OCX Component Error When Running a Program

© Ramesh Srinivasan | Windows Vista, Windows XP | 22nd July 2008

When you run an application which was created in Visual Basic 6.0, the
following error message may occur and the program terminates.
Component ‘RICHTX32.OCX’ or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a
file is missing or invalid.

This happens if the program uses Rich TextBox ActiveX Control (RichTx32.ocx),
but does not include the ActiveX file in the setup package.

To resolve the problem, download RichTx32.zip. Unzip the archive and extract
the file RichTx32.ocx to the Windows\System32 folder.

Note that the VB6 run-time distribution package from Microsoft does not include
the RichTx32.ocx ActiveX Control.

So now I should be able to use L8 afterall. Thank you to Sherry and all those

The version of Windows dictates where you would save the file to.
Windows Vista and later won't let you save files to the System32

I know this has probably been covered, but I can't seem to find an answer for
this.

For some reason, VB Decompiler lite (and P32Dasm) will not work on Windows 7
64-bit. I want to be able to include this in a tutorial, but am having no luck.
When you try to run it, you get a The module richtx32.ocx may not be
compatible with the version of Windows that you're running...

I have tried the various solutions I could find, including
 1. Running regsvr32.exe c:\Windows\system32\richtx32.ocx
 2. Running regsvr32.exe c:\Windows\syswow64\richtx32.ocx
 3. Running these with administrator rights in the command window
 4. Trying to install the VB6 runtime
 5. Trying to find different version of the richtx32.ocx file

I have solved the problem. If anyone is interested, here are the required steps:

 1. You MUST use the older version of the ocx file (and the version from VB
Decompiler Lite of Richtx32.ocx also works with VB Decompiler Pro and
P32Dasm).

 2. You MUST copy it into the sysWoW32 folder inside the Windows install
directory.

 3. You MUST run a command prompt with admin priviledges.

 4. You MUST register it by using: c:\Windows\syswow64\regsvr.32
c:\Windows\syswow64\richtx32.ocx

Re: [LegacyUG] Black On Black

2013-12-05 Thread grayscot2

If I could get it to white type on black that would be fine, but 10.1
doesn't seem to have a provision for changing the Notes font color.

I have re-installed 7.5 and verified that Richtx32.ocx is in
Windows\system32 and registered. I haven't re-installed 8 but got positive
responses on registering richtx32.ocx in Windows\systerm32 and syswow64. The
error message on clicking Notes in 8 is: Richtx32Invalid Property Value
so it must have something to do with Richtx32.ocx but doesn't value suggest
it is something set in the Registry?

I've run sfc /scannow and gotten assurances no files are missing and
integrity is OK.

The Note windows in Legacy are based on Windows setting. You can
change the font style and color in Options Customize Fonts 10.1
but not the background color.

In the past, the black windows have been related to a faulty
Richtxt32.ocx file, as shown in our KB article

Did you try those steps?

RE: [LegacyUG] Folder cleanup

2013-12-05 Thread grayscot2
Don,

You might try what worked before for 7 (as quoted just below) and if it
does, then re-install and uninstall 8 by the same method.

Prescott Smith presku...@yahoo.com
=
That did it. I reinstalled, the install.log was there but still wouldn't work
thru control panel. So I reinstalled, the install.log was there. But the
UNWISE worked perfectly.

Thanks for the quick response. I owe you one!

Dave Pointer

--

Not sure this will apply to your situation, but I had similar trouble with
7.5. and this might work.

Look in the program files for Install.log. If it's not there, try
re-installing 7.5 once more. Check again to see if install.log is among the
program files. You need this to get it uninstalled and each time you
uninstall it is deleted.

Now see if you can use Control Panel to uninstall, if it's there.

If this uninstall doesn't work; re-install again to get an install.log, then
go into the program and click on Unwise.exe. If you get options then to do an
Auto or Custom uninstall, choose custom. You'll get various options to
uninstall. If you hit all of them, you'll lose your unlocking number if it is
Deluxe and have to get it back from Legacy if you want to use 7.5 again.

 Well…

I ran the L8 uninstaller. It left behind C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy8
folder containing 1919 files, 82 folders with a total size of 138MB.
That’s the same size as the new installation. The My Documents\Legacy
Family Tree folder was also left behind and the same size as the new
installation. There were also numerous Registry entries left behind. I
reversed those and deleted the folders and contents, including the
C:\Legacy folder that I now know was left after uninstalling L7. I
realize that uninstalling a program often leaves files and Registry
entries, but what I found goes beyond a ‘conservative’ uninstall.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Issues

2013-12-04 Thread grayscot2

Much against my will, I'm probably going to follow this for Data, if
not for media, but I would like to propose that hereafter all user data be
allowed to be put somewhere else besides the Microsoft categories. Doesn't
anyone else resent the patronizing, over-possessive My Documents and My
Pictures? It makes you want to throw up to begin with and then the contempt
it shows for Windows users seals the deal.It is easy enough to copy over
the necessary folder and sub-folders to a dedicated custom directory without
all the other MS trash in it. Please don't do this again.

Margaret:

Legacy 8 has been updated to install the software in the more traditional areas
of Windows which provided enhanced security.

The older version 7.5 installed at the root level of drive C at C:\Legacy\ and
this by-passed the normal security built into Windows.

I recommend you use the latest L8 standard for installing and saving all your
new files.
Legacy 8 installs its program files in C:\Program Files (x86)\ which is where
they should be installed.  You should not mess with any of these files in this
location.

The Legacy 8 user data have been moved to:
 C:/Users/myname/documents/Legacyfamilytree/

There are subfolders under this directory that you should use:
1.  \_AppData\  -- this is where your usr settings and Books and iSearch, etc
settings are stored
2.  \Data\  -- This is where you should keep your Legacy 8 data files
(Carter.fdb, etc)
3.  \Media\ -- This is where all your pictures, pdfs, videos, etc should be
placed
(Note:  In Legacy 7, this folder was called \Pictures\)

The other 2 folders, Legacy FS and LegacyCharting are for those applications
within Legacy.

The only real folders you need to worry about are:
1.  C:/Users/myname/documents/Legacyfamilytree/Data/
2.   C:/Users/myname/documents/Legacyfamilytree/Media/

I recommend you copy (and I mean COPY and not MOVE) your old Legacy 7 data
files from:
C:\Legacy\Data to the new folder:
C:\Users\myname\documents\Legacyfamilytree\Data\

I recommend you copy (and I mean COPY and not MOVE) your old Legacy 7 picture
files from:
C:\Legacy\Pictures  to the new folder:
C:\Users\myname\documents\Legacyfamilytree\Media\

Note:  Copy you the Legacy 7 files so you retain the original Legacy 7 files in
their original location.  This will allow you to run both Legacy 7 and 8 on
your computer and it sort of provides a backup of your Legacy 7 original
files.   Once you open a Legacy 7 database in Legacy 8, you cannot go back to
Legacy 7, unless you use a GEDCOM format.

After you have copied your Legacy 7 database files and pictures to the new
Legacy 8 locations, then open Legacy 8 and do a File, Open, and browse to the
file and open the Carter.fdb, in your case.  It will convert your database to
the new Legacy 8 format.

Good luck.

A couple months ago, I got a new Windows 8 laptop. I installed Legacy 7.5

Legacy 8 and wanted to uninstall Legacy 7.5. But it doesn't appear in

Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?

Three very simple questions, which you might care to think about. How can a
manual be published before the way in which a program works has been

until the Manual had been printed? Or would you like it to be full of errors

it's free unless in the last few days they made it free.

As I understood it, those getting their numbers now for Deluxe are also getting
the .pdf. And I guess I am objecting to the fact that 7.5 was sold to me
without a manual or any information on how Family Search worked from LDS, since
that was the draw they were selling on.

Three very simple questions, which you might care to think about. How can a
manual be published before the way in which a program works has been finalised?
Or are you proposing that the release should have been delayed until the Manual
had been printed? Or would you like it to be full of errors on the date of
publication?

would be sent when it was available. I'm still waiting for that .pdf now after
months.

Richard et al,

If you are still waiting since Tuesday and you got an email confirmation of
your order, somehow your customer number was lost in your spam or something.
Everything I hear tells me that they have caught up on their backlog.

If you do not have your number by now, write Customer Service.

The email should be coming from :

Legacy Customer Service legacycustomerserv...@legacyfamilytree.com

with a subject line (something like...) :

Here is your Legacy 8.0 Deluxe Customer Number...

john.

The free upgrades to v8 for those who purchased v7.5 after early May
are now being sent out - either the physical product, if that's what
you ordered in v7.5 or an email with download information for v8, if
you purchased v7.5 download.

Considering there are thousands of upgrades to process we ask for your patience.

Re: [LegacyUG] E mail test and customer number

2013-12-01 Thread grayscot2

The Help File for 7.5 does very little to explain how to use Family
Search with or without Legacy 7.5. You learn nothing about the consequences
of matching, registering/contributing your tree, avoiding fostering duplicates,
the detailed procedures for using it from Legacy, the rationale and pitfalls
of the whole thing.

Sorry to complain but these are issues. Not sure why we had lesser
priority than new buyers but glad to know we are still somewhere in the queue.

You can buy the download with or without the PDF manual, or the CD
with or without the print manual and either print or PDF by itself.

Of course the Help file always comes with the program and is more
comprehensive and up-to-date than the printed manual.

It's been years since I've purchased a program that came with a manual
- usually it only comes with a help file.

RE: [LegacyUG] 7.5 Notes Unusable, Are 8's?

2013-11-30 Thread grayscot2

Answer is no. In L8 Standard, using the sample database, when I go to
open the notes for an individual, I now get the message: Richtx.Invalid
Property Value. I have to click OK twice to open the Notes database. This
step didn't happen in 7.5, but the result is the same. The General Notes field
is black screen, black fonts. Same with Research Notes. Medical has fields
for Cause of Death, etc in white background, but the larger field below is
black. Haven't checked in L8 but in L7.5, the Notes fields are black in all
views where this is a feature.

Anybody else have this or know what might be causing it. They gave up
in Tech Support for 7.5 but indicated it might be a known problem with Nvidia
graphic adapters. but the usual solution for this didn't work.

I was never able to find a solution to 7.5's Notes problem--black type on black

Is anyone having this trouble on L8?

That's impressive. Most of my great uncles/aunts were born in the 1880's and
1890's. Anyone before that was dead before I was born.

One thing I really hate in people's trees is they will have my lines
disconnected from the rest of their tree. If they are still researching and
trying to make the connection, they should keep it in a separate data file and
not post it online. It just further confuses people into thinking there is a
connection.

Bill,

I also can remember my grandparents, both of whom also born in the late 1800s,
and, like you, see information published which I personally know to be wrong. I
have also been able to fill in some gaps in the archives for a couple of
organisations of which my grandfather was a member.

My memory does actually go back somewhat further - I can just remember a great
uncle born in 1866!
