[LegacyUG] Different family files

2018-08-13 Thread olivannahen

Hi Folks... I am hoping someone will have the patience to tell me if I should
add all my different family files into just the one.
If this is the best way to go and will some information and media overlap and
cause difficulties.
I have eight files eg. Husbands maternal and another paternal... same for my
families. Takes time to backup each one.
How to go about merging all files.

Yes you can buy and not install immediately. You just need your Customer
Number/Unlock code then you can download the free version any time and
unlock it.

Yes you can put Legacy 9 on one computer and have Legacy 8 on the other
BUT you can't use the same database on both.

Really Legacy 9 is just Legacy 8 with a few tweaks and bug features AND
some completely new features almost all of which are Deluxe features -
which is why it makes no sense to try out the free version of Legacy 9.

The only reason for not updating is if you are sharing data with someone
else using Legacy 8 who won't update.

I might purchase v9 while on sale. This has likely been answered before
but I don’t remember.

Is it possible to purchase and not install for a time?
Also, can one run v8 on one computer and v9 on another?

It was mentioned as a needed feature but it does not exist yet. It is on

Mika, are you using the free version or Deluxe. I can’t remember if the Index
Tab is displayed in the free version is why I ask.

Either way, look for the INDEX Tab just below the menu bar, click on that tab
and then on ‘Options’ in the upper right hand corner of this window.

Click on ‘Customize’ and here you can choose the columns for the items you want
to display. Once you get it the way you want it, be sure to SAVE and give it a
name so you can LOAD and use it again in future.

If I am not clear, ask again and we will be happy to write out step by step, if
needed.

You can create many different customized views, save them with names that you
will recognize and easily switch between them, depending on what you are
researching at the moment.

Is there any way to do this in Legacy? I have been trying all weekend with no

I would go back and do it in PAF but Windows 10 doesn't work with PAF.

Gail,

That's a sign that you have opened the file from within a Backup zip file.
They end up in weird places. If you do it often you'll find that the
number in square brackets proliferates.
Backups should be restored in Legacy using File - Restore.
You can see the content of a Backup zip in File Explorer but you
shouldn't double click on the Legacy file inside a Zip folder.

To recover: With the file open in Legacy use File - Save As to save it
somewhere sensible.

Also read this up. Legacy can find all your files in a few minutes.
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00895/11/Error-Messages-Problems/I-lost-my-family-file-Legacy-8.html

If your family file normally has a date after the name, then you're
always opening it the wrong way unless you didn't mean the current date?

If you have further issues, contact Support.

Hi Gail,

Did you use the symbol in the upper left corner to open your file? It' a
capital L on a blue circle. That usually lists the last couple of files you've
opened.

That would be the simplest way. Unfortunately, if that doesn't work, I have no

The location of that file (the \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YCM1GS78\
part) indicates that it has been opened? or downloaded? by a browser, probably
Microsoft Internet Explorer. The [1] in the filename may indicate that the
download? has occurred more than once.

My guess is that it is something strange that you have managed to do, in error
- not the responsibility of Legacy software.

But I would suggest that you check its size – is it unusually small?

You can copy or move it to your usual Legacy folder, where other fdb files are
located. Then double-click and test whether Legacy FT likes it.

I’m curious why it’s taken “many days” of searching. Wouldn’t a search for
“*.fdb” from within File Explorer/Windows Explorer have accomplished the same
thing in just a few seconds?

I was ready to post that it’s virtually impossible for any browser to have
opened a .FDB file thus the reason for it being found in the “Temporary
Internet Files” folder. But Windows continues to amaze me with some of the
unexpected things it does. For example, today I tried to force Internet
Explorer to open my own .FDB file thinking that I get either gibberish
characters on the screen or else some kind of error indicating an incompatible
file type. However, when I pointed IE directly to the .FDB file via its OPEN…
menu function, IE then asked me if I wanted to OPEN or SAVE the FDB file. I
chose OPEN and it politely opened Legacy and then the .FDB file. In other
words, it used my own registry’s file association to first open the correct
application and then the requested .FDB file. How nice. Even using this
indirect method of forcing a browser to open a .FDB file, the file does not
appear in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

So that still doesn’t indicate how your .FDB file managed to find its way into
the Temporary Internet Files folder. I suspect a late night gremlin at
work…probably human in nature. J

after the word content, that character is a upper case i, but won’t type.
(different problem)

I never knowingly made that file that long or that content, at least knowingly.
Usually it isHennessy Family 22 Jan 2017.fdb

I don’t know how to fix this. Any help out there?

Thanks, Gail

Re: [LegacyUG] Hi folks ... first time posting

2017-01-19 Thread olivannahen
Thank you Brian for the detailed “how to. I am running Windows 7 on that
computer, and followed your instructions. They would likely work in Windows 10
but I can’t even find the options in 7. I am still running a copy of Legacy 8
on both a comp. with Win 10 and one with Win 7. All to do with a new computer.
Again I thank you for the advice.

Ciao, Gail in Canada

Some people may question why you want to even do an “open with…” but for
whatever your reasons are (rather than just running the main Legacy program
directly and then choosing what family files you may want to open), you can fix
your problem with Windows with a little bit of effort. For some strange reason,
your installation of Legacy 8 did not properly register itself within the
Windows Registry therefore Windows only knows about Legacy 7.5 and its
association with certain file types such as the family database files (.fdb).
Here is how to set that association yourself.

Right click on the family database file that you’d like to Open or Open With….
From the drop down menu, the very first item at the top should be the default
application associated with this file type. I’m assuming it reads “Open with
Legacy Family Tree” but the problem is that the association is still with the
previous version of Legacy 7.5.

Select the “Open with…” option. Because you want to make a change and tell
Windows to use Legacy 8 and not Legacy 7.5, make sure you put a checkmark in
the box that says “Always use this app to open .fdb files”. Do NOT yet click on
the OK button.

Next click on the “More Apps” option (you may have to scroll down to see it).

Windows will now present a list of apps that are suggested to open that file
type. Even if you see the icon and title of Legacy Family Tree listed, it might
still be the one that points to the older version 7.5. Do NOT select that one.

Keep scrolling down until you see “Look for another app on this PC” and click
that.

You should now be looking at the standard Windows Open File dialog window.
Navigate on this window to the exact location of where you installed your
Legacy v8.0 application. The default location is probably something like
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy8\Legacy.exe". Make sure you click on the
“Legacy.exe” file and then the word OPEN.

Once you click on OPEN, the proper association in Windows is now set, and your
.fdb file will open using Legacy 8. If it does not, then something is hosed
about your Legacy 8 installation in which case I’d suggest un-installing all
versions of Legacy (do not delete any family files). Then re-install Legacy 8
and you should automatically get the proper file type associations.

HTH

 Hi everyone...

I am running Legacy 8 and every time I try to do a “open with” on a drop
down, it will try to open to my previous 7.5 Legacy.

I have deleted this and tried asking on Google but am not getting answers
that help.

Any ideas?? Keeping in mind I am a novice compared to what I see in the
forums here. I do enjoy reading all your postings.

Cheers, Gail
