RE: [LegacyUG] Bug items List (used to be Same sex Marriages)

2015-08-28 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Brian, thank you for your most thorough feed back. You found a lot of
things, including our competitor's knowledge base (we have one too). But
what you did not find is their internal system used to track, categorize
and prioritize issues as well as manage programming projects. This may be
what some of our users want access to. However, these kinds of systems are
available only to employees plus approved beta testers who have signed
non-disclosure agreements. To access this kind of system you must have a
username and password -- or commit the criminal act of hacking the server.
And by the way, these kinds of systems are "secret" for good reason. Amen!

Google "known bugs in RootsMagic". Over 5,000 results in less than 1
second...of course, many of these are from 3rd party forums and discussion
boards but look for the any of the ones from the RootsMagic URL.

On the RM home page, click on "Support". Towards the bottom is their "Knowledge
Base". Click on that. Clicking on the very first item listed and it will get
you a window that starts out with "This is a known issue..."

But wait...there's more. Type in "known bugs" in the search box on the
Knowledge Base and you'll see a list of known bugs. Apparently RM likes to call
their problems "issues" and not "bugs" so type in "known issues". Another much
large list. BINGO!

Another nice feature is on the right side of the Knowledge Base page where you
can click on "Check Your Existing Requests".

We could bring up the Knowledge Base at Microsoft and the list of known bugs
there but its Microsoft. What else can I say?

So much for the theory of people saying they've never heard of a software
company having a list of known bugs. There are none so blind as those that will
not see.

That I understand and sympathize with. Just send a message to support and
ask what going on. We also try our best to notify people who have reported
bugs and keep their email addresses in the bug reports for that purpose.

Re: [LegacyUG] Bug items List (used to be Same sex Marriages)

2015-08-27 Thread Dave Keeney
Well put Jim, I probably gave the wrong impression of what I would like to
see.

I really don't need a list of all bugs. I agree that might be an unwanted
thing for products with a lot of bugs (which means all products).

I have never really seen a list of bugs for any other products either.

What I would like, though, is a way to be able to know the status of MY
reported bugs.

For other products, once I would report a bug, customer service would give
me a status of when that might be fixed, next update, next release, never,
etc.
And they would usually offer to provide me a status on a weekly, monthly,
etc. basis.
This may be an unfair because those were all larger companies (IBM, HP,
Microsoft, Amazon, etc.) and Legacy just doesn't have resources for
providing statuses.

I can't ever remember reporting a problem (even with smaller companies),
being told yes indeed it is a bug and we'll put it in our tracking system.
And then never being able to find out anymore about it.
But that's kind of the way it feels with Legacy.

Reasonable and understandable on future product direction but not on known and
acknowledged software bugs. Not having a list wastes everyone's time.

I have never known software or firmware where you cannot find a known problem
list, somewhere (ie readme files). As a database developer, programmer and
support manager of some 25 years that was standard requirement of me. I am not
talking here of new developments but rather of known existing bugs. I would not
put a fix date much to annoyance of various people but there was a list of
known bugs available to users.

Priorities are what appears wrong here. I would suggest they should be.

1. Fix bugs which cause Legacy to crash or freeze. I have one of these
outstanding. After 2 years there should be none of these.

2. Fix bugs which didn't happen in 7 but happen in 8. Have 2 of these
outstanding. After 2 years there should be none of these.

3. Fix bugs which cause data to appear incorrect or missing with certain
settings. Had one of these fixed in last release.

4. Fix situations where Legacy cannot store data re relationships between
persons which other genealogical programs can.

5. Fix report formatting problems.

6. Fix any other problems.

7. New developments including next major release.

No reported problem should remain unfixed or patched for longer than 6 months.

I did once use FTM, the major reason I left was they didn't fix bugs until next
major release, which you had to pay for. Then after paying for an upgrade the
bug was still there. Legacy don't follow the same route.

Please note I am not knocking Legacy here as I still consider it is one of the
best available. It used to be the best. However it appears 8 was released
before it should and that not enough testing was done. This has caused the
problems we are now seeing. I never ever found bugs in 7. For those suggesting
a downgrade, it's not that easy in terms of ensuring data integrity when you
have in excess of 7000 individuals.

I wanted to respond to this issue but agree it should not be included within
the "Same sex Marriages" thread. I've copied a few of the latest comments and
started this new thread.

Not being able to view the known problems list has been a big concern to me for
a long time.

Re: "It's not secrecy at all".
It sure feels like it's a secret when we can't see the status of problems.

Image removed by sender.

I've submitted several bugs that have been acknowledged. And I still do not
know any of their statuses. Some of them are so old that I sometimes forget
I've submitted one and do so again, only to be told that it's already in
process.

I also agree that everyone has bugs that are causing them grief. I've got one
that causes me many hours of extra work monthly. But it's my dealing with a One
Place study that probably doesn't rear its head to most people. So I agree with
the "you can't please everyone all the time".

My only recourse has been to find workarounds, a lot of times dealing with just
using the Access database which works for now but I'm sure sooner or later it
will come back to bite me by using it. Legacy is under no expectations from me
to tell me when they change things under the covers so sooner or later I'll
probably pay.

Re: It's frustrating but still the best.

I agree with this 100%. Programming puts developers in a sticky situation, a
lot of times in a "no win" "no win" situation.

So I appreciate Legacy's efforts, and will continue to find whatever
workarounds I can find for bugs and live with them as long as I can.

But it would be a lot easier just to know the status of them ... even if it's
LOW priority because nobody else as chimed in with that bug.

RE: [LegacyUG] Bug items List (used to be Same sex Marriages)

2015-08-27 Thread David Abernathy
I have been dealing with software since the mid 70’s.
There has been very few companies that have ever provide listing of “Bugs” let
alone enhancements.
Most will provide a list of what has been FIXED and/or enhanced for each update.

I have been looking for the past several days to see if I could find any
listings for any program and have not found any.

So why do people think that the makers of Legacy should be any different?

Thanks,

I have had the same happen to me; bugs not acknowledged that dropped into the
big black hole where they are never fixed. Considering how fast and sloppily
the programmers (maybe not they but their bosses) pushed out Legacy 8, that is
STILL incredibly buggy, it seems that they simply hope we will fade away while
they push out new bells and whistles rather than work on a program that could
be great if they concentrated on it.

Please, please, do NOT stop reporting bugs. As a matter of fact, report them
every day! :) When they drive us to use other programs, Legacy needs to know
about. Of course, that is assuming they want to keep us. The staff that
responds on this list, with a few exceptions, are VERY supportive, but must tow
the party line. They are, most likely, just as much in the dark as we, faced
with the task of placating our legitimate complaints while they are jerked
around by the powers that be.

Adrian,

It's not "secrecy" at all. Some changes like allowing same sex
relationships/marriages affect many aspects of Legacy, like reports,
events, file maintenance, etc. It takes time and testing. I presume things
that crash Legacy and affect the largest numbers of users probably get the
programmer's first priority. In addition, the programmers are always
thinking ahead to the next version while trying to work on things in the
current version. We have a bug tracking system as well as a list of
suggestions made by users that the programmers make use of. I image that it
all can get complicated. So we never know how long beta testing will take

We don't understand the process for prioritisation of bugs. From looking at
version fix lists some of the things fixed are very obscure and at the same
