Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Gene,

Other than FamilySearch.com, the other online records search site that
currently offers pre-written citations is AmericanAncestors.org (New England
Historic Genealogical Society).

I just wish the extracted information for the indexes at Ancestry.com were much
better. It becomes tiring finding major errors in extractions/indexes, writing
and sending corrections to Ancestry, than hoping that Ancestry will make the
changes. Unfortunately too many people seem to rely upon the index entries,
without actually reviewing the record image.

Yes, Denise. I'm using the basic source tool. What FamilySearch does is exactly
what I would like to see the other database services and sources of information
use. Maybe some of them will someday?

Thanks for your comments, though!

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Thank you Brian, but what I wrote is accurate. In the Basic Source, the Source
Detail text box of the Detail Information tab, there is a limit. Many of the
source - citations written for FamilySearch documents cannot be recorded unless
shortened, such as :

"United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," database with
images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6XK-WR8 : 12
December 2014), Jesse J Longnecker, 1917-1918; citing Ottowa County no 1,
Michigan, United States, NARA microfilm publication M1509 (Washington D.C.:
National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,682,806.

Instead, that source - citation from FamilySearch records only the following in
the Source Detail text box because of the character limits:

"United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," database with
images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6XK-WR8 : 12
December 2014), Jesse J Longnecker, 1917-1918; citing Ottowa County no 1,
Michigan, United States, N

I reported this situation many months ago and the problem is already confirmed
and on the list.

Denise,

The source text in all sources Basic and SourceWriter are allowed to contain
1,000,000 characters. You may be confusing the "Source text"
with the Source detail field which is limited to 255 Characters or the
Publication Facts field which is limited to 248 characters. Long citations
copied from FamilySearch into those shorter fields may not fit but any citation
should fit in the Citation Text.

You can see the limits of the fields in Legacy in the Help file. Open help and
look for capacities.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Gene,

Do you use Source Writer or the Basic Source tool?

If you use Source Writer, the complexity of the various types of data (vital
records, newspapers, census, military, etc), along with the multiple options
available in that tool, would extremely difficult for the Legacy software to
analyze and write an accurate and complete source and citation. Probably a
complex artificial intelligence component would be needed.

If you use the Basic Source tool, you can cut and paste a source and citation
created by an individual online service. FamilySearch already has such
pre-written source – citations for each document found, although most source –
citations are longer than Legacy will allow in the Source Detail text box. None
of the other services (MyHeritage, FindMyPast, or GenealogyBank) offer
pre-written source - citations for their found data.

Not much help I’m afraid. However, you might consider using the Basic Source
tool for any data you obtain from FarmilySearch. You could than use their
pre-written source – citations.

Gene said " will Legacy 9 facilitate in any fashion the creation of a
source citation". So the understanding is there that the source should be
cited, and the answer to the question is probably simply "no"

Legacy hints to the database, that hold the source, the source is what should
be cited, not the Hint.
