[LegacyUG] Do Over Question

2020-09-12 Thread Naomi SMITH BLACK
Hello all
I seem to work on my Genealogy every 3 years or so.
Now, I "think" my life is such that I can stick to it now.

I am doing the Genealogy Do Over in the modified version. I am not
scraping all 3,000 plus records.

I am doing it this time with better citations and research notes, etc.
I am also keeping notes that I can piece into a cohesive account of how and
why I did this, that or the other. It will make it easier for her to pick
up where I left off someday.

I am undecided as to how to most efficiently go about it.
I have a copy of my original Legacy tree.
Is there a way I can clear all the citations, sources, etc. without
deleting the names & dates?
Or, should I start with a totally naked file from absolute scratch?
I would prefer not to start from scratch, but I will if I have to.

All suggestions will be considered.

Re: [LegacyUG] Do Over Question

2020-09-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

Naomi
What you do really depends on the state of your current file.
It may be easier and quicker to start a new file and make sure you
source everything correctly as you go.
If you have lots of entries that are already well entered and sourced,
then it may be better to tag everyone and untag them after checking them
thoroughly.Or tag people after checking them.
If you have some good Master Sources and decide to start a new file, you
can tag the good Master sources in your old file and import them into
your new file. In the Master Source list in your new file, go to Options
> Import Lists

I haven't started a new file but every now and again I tag everyone
using a poor Master source using Show List in the Master Source List and
go through and update/replace that source.
I do the same when the old source is a transcription and now the images
are available. In this case I add a new source and leave the old source
as it's still valid.

If you stay with your old file, there is also the Search > Find >
Missing Sources tab which can find which people have data but are
missing sources. Be selective so you only get a list short enough and
specific enough to work on. Again tag them and untag when checked.

If you use tags, make sure on the Advanced Tagging screen you say what
you are using each tag for.

You ask about removing sources and leaving names and dates. You can
remove Master Sources one by one. When you click on Delete in the Master
Source list (under the Options button) you will be told that the
highlighted source is being used. If you opt to see who is using it,
you'll find a Delete anyway button. I prefer to use the old badly
formatted source as a guide though as explained above.

I would like to do the same thing as Naomi. I have over 300 people in my Legacy
file that was created from an imported GEDCOM from Family Tree Maker. When I
was using Family Tree Maker I didn't understand how to properly cite my
sources. So I'd like to remove whatever sources and citations came from the
imported GEDCOM file in Legacy without having to re-enter all those people and
their dates. Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks,Robin McCarthy

Robin,

I tell you how in my response to Naomi.
For 300 people doing this by first deleting all Master Sources is maybe
the way to go but read my full reply.

I agree with everything Cathy said in an earlier post.

I would not immediately remove all your existing citations, though. I
would look at each one and see it says. If it records that someone
found some information on an Ancestry Member's Tree, then you will
probably want to to look for other, more reliable Sources for that piece
of information. If it says it same from a particular Parish Record you
will want to look to see if those records are available online so you
can download the image. And so on.

You will certainly want to re-source all your records, but having the
old Sources will save time by giving you a starting point. Use Tagging,
as Cathy suggests, so you can work on a small area or one "problem" at a
time and you won't feel daunted and will get a good sense of achievement
as you go along.

Great info - I too need to do a complete overhaul & the tag feature will
be a great help in keeping tabs on progress.

Is there a way to tag ALL marriages in the family file in the same way
as you can for individuals (all in one go)?

Thanks
