I paste the info into a new event for the person, called "Burial Record". Use the data as a source if appropriate to add birth and death dates and places, even parents, spouse, children, etc., if that is included. It would be security settings on the second computer through the browser, security program, or through a firewall. If this is at work, you'll need to check with the IT people there - they may not allow this type of activity. I can easily go to certain websites at home, but at Jack In The Box they're blocked! Re: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave Link
The FAG search function leaves much to be desired. It needs an alternative index of surnames in which a search for a last name variant links to the same person. Who ever contributes the memorial can choose only one name variant - with or without the "de", "van", "von", etc., to say nothing of the many different ways a name was spelled over time and even in the same document! The problem is with FAG, not Legacy. I just tested and I can drag icons from the available area to the toolbar. I just checked the Help and I see that Find A Grave is listed as a Deluxe Version Feature. The link took me to a page that listed the FInd A Grave video under new in the archive, then I clicked on view now right before Find A Grave... and it took me to the page that plays the video. Maybe try it again? Or reboot your computer if that doesn't work? Maybe too many people were clicking on it at once or some other weird glitch on your side or Legacy's side. Re: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave template
I have one of these situations - I have personally physically stood in front of the grave of someone whose death certificate states he's buried in another town entirely. The cemetery where he is has him in their records, but the cemetery where his death certs says he is, does not. In my case, both places start with the same 5 letters, but the mis-information is still there. As such, I have made notes with the death certificate entry, and the grave entry stating the facts, and documenting the steps I took to ensure that he was not at the other location. I guess what you do to ensure the record is correct in your own tree, depends on where the error is, and if it is something that can be changed or adjusted with relative ease. My own mother's death certificate has the wrong crematorium. My sister picked it up after the death certificate was issued and we don't know who was responsible for the error. In this case, of course, we knew which was the correct crematorium. Jerry, For Find A Grave, searching on the person's married name is better. Some graves have both the maiden and married names but most don't. Thus not having last name is not a big deal when searching FindAGrave. This is not true for other sites. Jerry Boor - http://www.MerriamFamilyTree.org First off, I put the wife's married name in privacy brackets, [[SMITH]]. This way I know who she is and it never shows up in any reports. I can easily change it to the correct name when that is established and doesn't involve any cludges or workarounds. Secondly, If you are using Legacy's Search the Internet feature, when you select the search you wish to use you are presented with the opportunity to change the name to whatever you wish to search on so it doesn't really matter what is in the Database for a last name. Just enter what you want to search on. I hope this isn't considered off topic as this is to use with Legacy. Anyone using Find a Grave for Legacy?? I am trying but it seems as if your names must follow strict guidelines. In my database I have added a comment in the suffix field for some. Such as wife of if I don't have a last name. Sheila, This is the kind of thing that can happen when you use a Legacy field for something for which it is not intended. I don’t know how it might affect your reports, but using third party software and some of the features in Legacy will be impacted. A big part of my research is done using the “Customized Search” feature and using the name fields for anything but names will certainly impact this feature. You need to decide which you want, a database that will use all its features or one that has some of the features that are not available. RE: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave
Tim, I do not see anything wrong with your search string. It matches what I have and am having no problem with it. I am not sure how findagrave reacts to a middle name vs middle initial. That is will findagrave find Mary Lou Johnson if the name entered is Mary L. Johnson. I do know it works better if you add a location. Legacy does not provide for passing a location and it must be added as a refinement after you arrive at the site. I have asked that the list of variables be expanded to include location and spouse information. To date have not heard if it fell on deaf ears or not. -Original Message- From: Tim Rosenlof [mailto:spa...@xmission.com] Sent: Saturday, August 13, 2011 11:30 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave I'm having a hard time with the following string with the middle name. RE: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave
I can't imagine how anyone could think this of topic. Being able to search the internet directly from Legacy is one of its most powerful tools. I probably have more than 100 custom searches that I use. Using the detail search and the advanced tagging features along with customized searches quickly finds your records in various data collections at various web sites with only two or three clicks of the mouse. Example: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=WW1draftrank=1new=1so=3MSAV=1msT=1gss=ms_r_dbgsfn=[GivenNames]gsln=[SurName]msbdy=[BirthYear]dbOnly=_F00031C3|_F00031C3_xdbOnly=_F000277E|_F000277E_xuidh=7t6 gets you to the WWI Draft Card collection and generally finds your man. Re: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave
Thank You ! Great string. You must have spent quite a bit of time for over 100. Default is 21~23. I have spent hours and hours on one and can't get it right. Some day ..
