RE: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number
Just to put my 2 bob’s worth in, RIN numbers are convenient but I create user id’s, the reason (from experience) if you change Genealogy software the new software will generate its own RIN numbers, what you have been working with and maybe sharing with others will be obsolete, by having user id’s they stay consistent no matter what medium you use, example of mine is I use letters and numbers, i.e. Smith would be under S and all surnames starting with S are numbered from 1 onwards, in my case of Woolvett I’m W51 irrespective of RIN number, I also use these id’s for numbering pic’ documents etc. Brian Woolvett From: SHIRLEY ANDERSON [mailto:yor...@prodigy.net] Sent: Monday, 28 January 2013 5:13 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number We're all still learning. Re: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number
I fill the User ID fields with the MRINs using LTools. As I file by MRIN I have the option to turn on User IDs across Legacy in places that use the RINs by default. It may be possible for you to use LTools to assign some other suitable-to-you numbers into the User ID fields instead. http://ltoolshelp.zippersoftware.com/#31-en http://zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/what-is-ltools/ --- JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://jlog.jgen.ws/ On 1/27/2013 10:00 AM, Jane Sarles wrote: > I don't believe I have ever established user ID numbers, since I thought > that was what the RIN was. If the person has a FindAGrave memorial # I overwrite the RIN in the User ID field. Re: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number
I just recently created a combined family file by merging my husband's file and mine. The catch is that I had been filing by MRIN and although I thought I'd solved the problem, I think it will be easier if I use the MRINs from the two old files as ID numbers. That would be one use that I can see. I think you could use J1 for you, J2 for your father, etc. and CH1 for your children's father, CH2 for his father, etc. I just tried using such a number and it worked. Maybe you have some other use or maybe you don't need them at all. I've gotten along very well without them until this recent file merge. Re: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number
To expand on this the only fields that you can use to locate people are the three shown at the top of the screen. To have USER ID as the sort and as a field you can use to find people you have to click the Options button on the Index View and change the sort/search to User ID. This will change the sorting order and the search even if User ID is not one of the fields displayed on the screen. Changing the button/field at the top of the screen does NOT change the RIN Column in the body of the screen to User ID column. To display the User Id on screen use the customize columns choice on the menu opened by the Option button.
