It sounds like you have some hidden format control characters. If this is in a notes field, try using the Strip HTML function. I'm not sure if it will help the period/vertical bar problem, but I think it may help your spacing issues. I have ran a Check/Repair, Compact File and booted my computer, but these issues are still there.
