Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
Hi Dennis, The changes are in the file I have relinked so nothing is making sense. I have now made five new files and restored the last five backups - I got to backup no 3 before the photos were all correct - back to one on the 11th. What I am now doing is checking changes between restores 1, 2 and 3 to see what changes I have made and entering them on to the one that has all the photos attached. So it seems that out of three backups in the past week only one has the photos attached correctly. Naturally any files I have attached since backup 3 are not attached but I will do those manually - much easier than re-attaching all the photos. Thank you for all the help - I have no idea what happened - I can't backup much more than I have done - I am thinking of deleting all backups apart from the last month itself in case I have problems again! Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
I have the prompt for backups each time I exist and both data and multimedia are backed up every other session, which is about every second or third day. Cannot quite see how I would open a 6 month old file - Legacy opens the same file each time, and there are only four files in the Database - all four with different names for different reasons - one is unrelated names, two others are for completely different family names. I don't often open the other three but work on the main one, mostly every day, so I have no idea. I have now deleted all the trial and restore versions and all backups more than 4 months old. I shall have to check the external backup hard drive and see what was saved to that as the whole computer was backed up four days ago as well!!! Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
Dennis, The backup I used was two days old. I backup every other time I use Legacy - which is about every third day so in any given month there are at least 10 - 12 backups. Occasionally I will go in and delete some of the very old backups so the drive doesn't get too clogged, Paul, When I change computers naturally the photo path didn't link so I went in and re-linked every single photo and file by hand after some discussion with the LUG. Since that time everything has been fine and each photo was linked to the E drive where the files are all held. Richard, Yes I realise now that keeping photos in a file away from the Legacy file is not a good idea but when I started many moons ago it seemed a good idea at the time and since then the files have grown so much that it didn't seem like a good idea to try and transfer them all. Knowledge comes with time! I haven't been able to check if the new folders I have inserted are showing (memory is my problem here!!!) but . the restore I did was from 11 12 12 - I have nothing prior to the changeover in the backups that I can see as a restore. I have just gone in and opened up a new file (with a new name) and then restored from 04 12 12 - and lo and behold all of the pictures are there. The only backup I have on my computer from the old computer is back in April 2011 - that is the link to the old photos but why would a restore from the 11 12 11 pick up a file back from April - it has never done this before. I have just restored two more from different dates and they seem to be fine. Now it seems I either have the choice of relinking all the photos or taking an old file and working out all the changes I have made (which are reasonably numerous) Thank you for all of your help, it is greatly appreciated (I don't want to do a separate email at the end thanking eveyone - I find it aggravating to open a possible interesting email and find it just says thank you) Marion On 14 December 2011 01:42, Bruce Jones juicebo...@gmail.com wrote: Following Richard's suggestion, when you go to Options Customize Locations View Current List how many paths are shown? [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
I am using Windows 7 Legacy Deluxe v 7.5.0.112. I backup every other time I use Legacy and yesterday made a mess of some entries so I decided to restore the files from the previous backup (as I have done before if really necessary). This time I restored, went to my pictures for something and the dreaded ? mark is on all of the pictures. My photos are stored on my E drive in folders and sub folders, Legacy and backups are stored on the C drive, and the only time I have had this problem before was when I was moving from one computer to another. I have gone to Options/Customise/Locations/View Current List of Multimedia Locations and none of the paths line up with where my files are, but under the Picture Sound Sideo and Files the location to look for the files is correct for the E drive. When I tell Legacy to check for the picture file itself it doesn’t search in the correct location but under a location that is a sub folder under the E drive that is not actually used in Legacy Apart from going through the whole picture file again and searching for the pictures myself is there something else I can do? I have done a File Maintenance and that has not changed anything. Before I sit down for two or three days and manually find all the files is there anything else I can do please??? Marion, You only need to go to one picture from each of your picture folders, provided that you do not have duplicated file names. i find that the best way is to go to one of the pictures with the '?' on it, select that one and opt to search for the file yourself, go to the file and click 'Open'. All files in that folder should now be found. Thanks Ron, Sadly I have folders for each family with several same named sub folders (Documents, Photos, Census, Misc) under each one! I set it up years and a quarter ago and have never been able to face changing the system, which is why I had to do the pictures sub folder by sub folder when I orginally moved computers. I still can't work out why the picture location would have changed when I just restored from a previous backup - I've done this before and haven't had the problem! I also can't work out why Legacy won't look in the location when it is told to search and the link is shown as the E drive. Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
Marion, You are correct in saying that restoring your Family File should have had no effect on the links with you pictures etc., and I have no idea why this should have happened. As far as the the picture locations are concerned, I take it that you are referring to CustomiseOtherLocations; I have only ever regarded these as the default setting for telling the program where to start when registering a new file. To be honest I have never found it to be particularly useful, and generally do not bother with it. I am afraid that I know of no other option other than the suggestion which I have already made. Hi Marion, You said: Again these have no relation to this computer. When everything was brought over from this computer all of the photos and documents were transferred into the E drive, since then there have been numerous extra folders and sub folders added to the E drive on this computer. When you got the new computer and moved all of the pictures to the E: Drive, what did you do to change all of the multimedia paths to the E drive? If you didn't do anything, perhaps all of the old paths have been 'out of date' all along. Yes, you would have correct links to anything you have linked since you moved to the new computer, but existing paths would not have changed unless you took some specific action to do so.
