Re: [LegacyUG] Running compact family file
Hi I would not run a Compact unless I was told that it was needed, which seems to be your case if Check/Repair asked you to do it. In that case, the report that Check/Repair produces might give an indication as to why. Your run times seem to be slow, but it would depend on the size of the file and your PC. Just for a test I have duplicated my live database, currently 24676 KB for 12000 people, and then compressed it. That only took a minute or so and reduced it to 23304 KB so it only got a 5% reduction. The Compact, ignore my earlier email, should not remove any information. All that it does is to compress the various tables to recover space that had been used by deleted entries. Basically, Access never overwrites space that had been used by deleted records. It always just adds new data at the end. I would not normally expect to use Compress unless I had been deleting a lot of records. Regards Chris From my Motorola G6+ On Wed, 9 Oct 2019, 22:05 Ginny Vocelli, wrote: Whew! Re: [LegacyUG] Running compact family file
Ginny Make sure you do File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair regularly. It has a compact within it but I don't know if it is as extensive as the separate one. It has many other elements that are vital to keeping your database healthy. Databases need maintenance. Re: [LegacyUG] Running compact family file
Hi This should only take a few minutes. If half of the dialog is missing then you should be able to drag it back into vision. Then see if there is a button waiting for a response. Do you have a current backup, which you should always do before running Check/Repair. If so, restore that and run the Check/Repair again. If you get an error messages - write them down and then go to the Legacy support site to see if it is a known issue. If not then raise an issue with them.
