Re: [LegacyUG] War casualty
Constance, The standard phrase, "Tablet of the Missing", used by the American Battle Monuments Commission, does not convey much information. I have a first cousin who died 7 September 1944 ; "at sea", The Philippine Islands, about ten miles north of Sindangan Point, Mindanao. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery, which spans 152 acres, and contains 17,206 graves. The Tablets of the Missing, containing 36,285 names, are inscribed onrectangular limestone piers within two large semicircular structures on a wide terrace In front of the chapel. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial (77 acres), is dedicated to the fallen, from the campaign of Sicily to the Liberation of Rome. There is cenotaph honoring the dead, a burial ground with 7,860 headstones, and the names of 3,095 Missing are memorialized on the interior walls of the chapel. [LegacyUG] War casualty
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I hadn't thought of a memorial event. It sounds a good way to handle it except that it would appear at the end of a report, far away from the death. My other thought would be to put the memorial location details in the buried location and add burial notes to explain what really happened. Like most things, I'll play around with it and see what works for me. I've now got lots of options I didn't have before. RE: [LegacyUG] War casualty
I have a couple that were killed in action, bodies never recovered. I put the date of death and the date of burial the same (even though the body wasn't buried it was committed to the earth by means of being abandoned on the battlefield). I also fill out the cemetery info and in the notes I have something like this Memorial marker reads: John Q. Citizen Sgt US ARMY World War II 01 Jan 1920 - 15 Jun 1944 John was killed in action in Italy, body was not retrieved/returned. A memorial marker was placed in the Coaltown Cemetery as this is the cemetery where his parents, grandparents and siblings are buried. Tony: I would use the cemetery but note that what you have is a Cenotaph, which is a monument to a deceased person, but not a place where that person is buried. RE: [LegacyUG] War casualty
I think I would add a Burial Note, without adding a date or location. Or, since it isn't really a burial, maybe add a Death Note explaining circumstances of his death and details of the memorial wall.
