Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files - Finding and Keeping
Ah, haan explanation. Now I will check that all the files are properly linked in the Picture Gallery. Once that is true, I shouldn't have any more files reported missing, should I? Thanks, Brian. Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files - Finding and Keeping
Marnie I don't believe it matters if your PDF file is located in the Docs or Data folder, either one should be acceptable. For a PDF file to work in Legacy it must be linked using the "Files" option and not the "Picture" option. When attaching a file to legacy there are four options Picture, Sound, Video and Files. It is critical that documents (DOC) and PDF files are attached using the Files option. It really doesn't matter what folder they are stored in on your computer. I recently imported a gedcom from another program and all of my docs and pdfs were dumped in as Pictures. They showed up but they could not be opened by clicking on them. I would suggest you take one of your pdfs and unlink it and reattach it as a File. Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files - Finding and Keeping
The lf.jpg file is a place holder for those files that are linked using the Files button. Since Legacy cannot display the .pdf, .doc or whatever other file format has been linked using that button it uses lf.jpg as the "picture" for that file in the person's media gallery. Similarly files that are linked as sounds and videos use a jpg to display a picture in lieu of the actual file that is linked ls.jpg for sounds and lv.jpg for videos. I see that the Picture Centre ignores any ls.jpg and lv.jpg files for sound and videos (they are not shown on the attached pictures tab) but does not ignore the lf.jpg file. I suggest you just ignore any lf.jpg files that show in the picture centre. Use the person's Media/Picture Gallery and you will see the correct document, video or sound file name there. Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files - Finding and Keeping
Mike, Let me see if I understand Even though the Picture Center lists the description of the PDF file and links it to a file that Legacy has named lf.jpg (all the missing files are named this in the Picture Center), I shouldn't EXPECT the files to show up there. All of my files and pictures have unique names. The Picture Center doesn't use them. I should just link a PDF through the individual's Picture Gallery using the "File" button? Should I delete the lf.jpg file from the Picture Center? I can get this straightened out...I know I can. Folks on this list are so helpful. AND patient. Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Multimedia Files - Finding and Keeping
Marnie, May I suggest that you first get your files sorted out and then look for missing image files - although if, as in the case which you illustrated they have an incorrect extension. Whereas a long time ago PDFs were stored in the image files this is no longer the case so I suggest that you move them to the Files folder, and you remove the Legacy link and relink it. after that you can deal with the image files. You do not say how many, but I would recommend that you get them properly linked - and make sure that your images have unique file names, and are alpha/numeric only with no spaces - these can be replaced by a hyphen or underscore. I have missing multimedia files determined by going to Options>Customize>Locations>Test all multimedia paths. I've been able to locate many of the missing files, but some others won't stay found. I'm sure there is something simple that I am missing, but. I open the Picture Center, select the appropriate individual in the "Name" box, check for the file in the "picture filename" box. Of course, it isn't there. I know which file is missing because the "attached pictures" box below the "picture filename" box has an entry "lf.jpg" and the column on the right shows, in the "attached picture" tab shows the description of the missing file. When I highlight "lf.jpg", I get a dialog box saying the file was not found in the "picture/sound/video/file folders". From the options in the dialog box, I choose to look for the file myself. It is a PDF located in my C:/Legacy/Docs folder. When I select the file and click "open", the lf.jpg is replaced by the file I selected. So far, so good. I click "Close" to close the Picture Center. Then I go to the individual in the "Family" tab and click on the "picture" icon. The file is in the Picture Galley, BUT when I go back to the "Picture Center", the "lf.jpg" is back and the file I selected has evaporated. If I go back to the individual's Picture Galley, the file is still there. Is there a step I am missing? I thought perhaps the problem was that I was using a PDF, but it happens with JPGs as well. I tried clicking "attach" before I closed the Picture Center, but that just attached the first file in the "picture filename" list. I did a Check/Repair on the database and there were no problems. This isn't a critical problem because I can just ignore the message that there are missing files. I just thought I'd do a little clean-up. I've been trying for 2 days. Re: [LegacyUG] missing multimedia files
When Legacy links to a multimedia file it stores the exact path to the file in your family file. For example C:Legacy\Pictures\UncleGeorge\aunt_millie.jpg. or C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Documents\Pictures\MyFamily\UncleGeorge\aunt_millie.jpg. Since you have changed computer and have all your multimedia on a new drive, probably with a different path on that drive you will have to point Legacy to the correct path(s). Go to Options > Customize > Locations Click the View List of Multimedia Locations button Select each file path in the list and use the change button Browse to the new location of that path on the separate drive where your pictures are now stored. Click OK to change the recorded file path. Repeat as needed for all the other paths Brian Customer Support Millennia Corporation br...@legacyfamilytree.com http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com -- On 28-Dec-12 05:55, Donna Newell wrote: > I purchased a new computer and I am now experiencing a problem. > > All of my scanned in documents(census records from ancestry, pictures of > graves stones from findagrave) did not come through. The main thing to remember is that using Legacy to restore a file (Restore under the File menu) does NOT restore the multimedia files. You have to unzip the separate multimedia backup file yourself, AND ensure that the files wind up in the exact same location as they came from. A manual restoration amounts to much the same thing, with the exception that YOU have to unzip the database backup file into the place where Legacy is currently expecting to find the family data files. Then, as above, manually unzip the multimedia files. Just copying a family database file from one machine to another is perfectly valid. But you won't retain all your program, screen and report settings unless you copy them as well. If you restore your multimedia files to a different place than that where they came from, Legacy can't find them because the family database file still retains the locations from the previous machine. Thx Ron and Leo for clarifying the bug for me. I ran into it a lot when I was reorganizing my multimedia files, and was frustrated whenever someone here would say "select the first one and Legacy will fix all other occurrances"... it didn't for me! Well, many of mine were source citations, of course. Thx again. --Paula in Texas Researching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson Betz Bigley Blagrave Burton Chapman Clement Clough Coppernoll Costine Daulton Dinwiddie Doody Ellis Exline Field Floran Floyd Gates Goodale Gordon Gump Hale Harbaugh Hind Hopkins Hughes Hurdle Jones Klein Koyle Laswell McDonald Misner Passwaters Pelton Roberts Roche Ryburn Short Singer Sullivan Weller Williams From: Ron Ferguson To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, September 29, 2011 1:53:47 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files Lavern, For once I will knowingly use html!! Re: [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files
Lavern, You might consider naming your files without any commas or periods in the file names. I would suggest you go further and not use any spaces either. I seem to remember receiving that recommendation here on the LUG list... something about making files for uploading to a website work better...? For example, C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County - Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero 1920 U.S. Census.jpg becomes C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio-Cuyahoga_County-Cleveland\Cariota_Calogero_1920_US_Census.jpg I also tend to include the page or sheet number in my filename, and surname. Guess I just haven't gone so far as to use the entire head-of-household in the file name. I do have several cases where multiple families are on the same page, even with different surnames. Just mentioning for your future consideration. --Paula in Texas Researching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson Betz Bigley Blagrave Burton Chapman Clement Clough Coppernoll Costine Daulton Dinwiddie Doody Ellis Exline Field Floran Floyd Gates Goodale Gordon Gump Hale Harbaugh Hind Hopkins Hughes Hurdle Jones Klein Koyle Laswell McDonald Misner Passwaters Pelton Roberts Roche Ryburn Short Singer Sullivan Weller Williams From: Lavern Hall To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Wed, September 28, 2011 12:10:31 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files Hello everyone, I am still plugging away at entering census data, only this time my problems are with the 1920 photo. I captured the census photo from Amazon.com, just like Geoff showed us in the webinar and saved it on my C-drive as the head of the household, etc. I saved everything and was exiting Legacy when I got the "Missing Multimedia files..." screen. So, I went to Options > Customize> Locations. There I selected, "Make a list of all multimedia files" and a screen appeared with "One or more multimedia files are missing". I was asked if I would like to view the missing files. Ok. 1 1/2 pages later I had a full list of problems which I printed out. A final message stated that "all picture, sound, video, and document locations have been verified." I clicked OK. I went to HELP and read the "Checking Multimedia Locations" instructions. Being that I have done nothing with multimedia files before, I just followed the instructions:1) Test all Multimedia Paths, 2) selected the "Unlink unreferenced picture, sound..." option (thinking that Legacy would get rid of what I wasn't using), and 3) Make a LIst of All Multimedia Files. Result: problems not fixed. Here is a partial list of results: Missing Multimedia Files in: C:\Legacy\Data\Lavern Cariota Family.fdb Event Picture: Census: Calogera SEMINATORE [5] C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County - Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero 1920 U.S. Census.jpg Event Picture: Census: Nunzia CARIOTA [42] C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County - Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero 1920 U.S. Census.jpg Event Picture: Census: Giuseppe VINCIGUERRA [50] C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County - Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero 1920 U.S. Census.jpg Event Picture: Census: Catena CARIOTA [43] C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County - Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero 1920 U.S. Census.jpg Picture (Mary Cariota): Alternate Name: Source Detail: Calogera SEMINATORE [5] C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County\Cleveland\Cariota, Calogero - 1920 US Census.jpg I searched the archives and found suggestions for a similar problem. But simply put, I don't know what I'm doing! Here's my confustion. 1) On the individual's Assigned Sources list, I scrolled down to where the 1920 census line and clicked on it. The Master Source picture was there, but the Source Detail picture was not, so I pasted the photo there. (and thought that would solve the problem, but later when I ran another "missing list" the problem is still there! 2) I am not sure what needs to be written for the Captions. Is is the head of the houshold and 1920 census with the census date, or the individual person's name, 1920 census, and date? My apologies for the length of this query. Some direction would be greatly appreciated. Lavern, For once I will knowingly use html!! See below, Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ From: Lavern Hall Sent: Thursday, September 29, 2011 6:55 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files Ron, Thank you for thrashing this out. A few questions still remain: 1) The 1920 census picture is filed on my C-drive C:\Legacy\Pictures\USA\Ohio- Cuyahoga County\Cleveland so, it is not a problem to access and use that photo. The original was saved from Ancestry.com as the head of the household (Cariota, Calogero -1920- U.S. Census). That said, when I link that photo to a family member event, what do I use as the caption? 1920 U.S. Census, or do I repeat the way it was originally saved? Firstly if ‘Cariota, Calogero -1920- U.S. Census’ is a file name I suggest that you replace the comma with an underscore ‘_’. If by ”caption” you mean the box of that name below the image I just put ‘census’ in it and the date in the date box, but you can put in it what you wish – ie. whatever seems most clear or most appropriate to you. 2) When I opened the Calogero Cariota's individual picture gallery in family view, I found that there were no pictures, so I transferred 1920 census picture there and saved it. The "Show Picture Gallery for this Person" icon is now in color. However, a census thumbnail appears next to Calogero Cariota's name on family view. This isn't correct, is it? Since you have transferred a census image to that link then, yes, that is what you will get. Obviously I am no position to say if that is what you want! 3) Once this process is repeated for each family member listed on the 1920 census, will this correct the Missing multimedia files screen? As far as I can tell, yes it will. Just remember that correcting the multimedia files screen is not the must important aspect of this work – because it is there does not mean that it has to be used. I do add images to all my sources because it gives me easy access to the image should I need it, just ensure that the correct image is linked Thanks, Lavern On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 5:16 AM, Ron Ferguson wrote: Lavern, I'm afraid that the discussion has got a bit away from your original question, which I will come back to. Let us consider pictures which are missing, at the moment it doesn't matter from where in Legacy. The main question is: are they still on your PC? If not then to try and reattach is clearly a waste of time. Broadly speaking when they are gone from your PC, they are gone. So, use Windows Explorer to search your PC for the missing pictures, and make a note of the folder in which they are now. You can either move them back or leave them. If you leave them in the new location, and the picture is in the picture gallery, click on the picture icon in Family View, and missing pictures will be shown by a question mark instead of the picture - click on this and you will see a pop-up giving options as to how you can find it. Since you have already found it using Windows Explorer, click browse by yourself and go to that picture, select it and it should be relinked to all the persons to which it applies. As will other pictures in that folder, if applicable. The basic method is the same for Event pictures and Source pictures, although Leo drew attention to the fact that with Source pictures it only replaces the image attached to the individual's Source selected, it is this which latterly we were discussing, and which, in our view, is a bug. Leo, Have just run a check using an image in the multimedia pictures for a Source Detail and it worked fine for me. Off-hand I cannot think what you may do to make yours work – but I’ll sleep on it! Ron and James, When a picture that was attached to a source has been altered, (name changed - John Smith to John Adam Smith) (File type - BMP to JPEG) or (Location - c/leg/pic to c/mydoc/pic), by any means other then in the Legacy Picture Center, then clicking on the question mark indicating that picture is missing, will not renew all the links where that source was used. Oh, bother! Ron, you are correct, and I offer apologies to Lavern if I've muddied the water now. The key to the problem in this case is to fix the link via the ? as Ron suggests, not to manually go and (re)attach a new photo in one location. James, I am unsure as to what you are saying here " Perhaps you are struggling with another extremely unfortunate feature Legacy. Any source or event, every place that they are attached, result in a separate copy. As such, say you've pasted the same source 4 or 5 times (as this looks like has been done), then you decide that you really need to update that for some reason, you must update each one separately. " You are correct that search and replace will not find pictures, but it is the first part which which I have a problem. Legacy does not attach multiple copies of a picture to everything to which it is attached, in fact it stores the path, and if you correct for one missing link for a particular picture by clicking on the question mark indicating that it is missing, it will renew the link for them all. [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files
Hello everyone, I am still plugging away at entering census data, only this time my problems are with the 1920 photo. RE: [LegacyUG] missing multimedia files
Hi Mike, Your response has confused me a little. I have viewed and printed the 'View Current List of Multimedia Locations' and have been working the last few days (during my spare time) to reattach the pages and pages and pages of pictures. There is nothing there I don't want.but they are ALL on my c drive. I can't figure out why Legacy is looking on a different drive or how to tell it to look someplace else. Ron, I looked there to start with and all of my paths are the default settings c:\ but the box that pops up after Legacy searches, says that is searching in d:\ as soon as I click on an option in the "file not found" box the box that says it was searching in d:\ also closes. Lester, When you run Legacy’s “test of all multimedia paths” You get a "Missing.txt" report which tells you the RIN and event where the TIFF file is still expected to be. [LegacyUG] Missing multimedia files
I had over 100 linked TIFF files each of which I recently deleted & * replaced* with a jpeg (of the same picture). In most cases there was no problem, but in 5 cases (each, as it happens, relating to an Event/Fact), Legacy’s “test of all multimedia paths” is still listing those 5 TIFFs as 'missing'. What must I do to have their deletion recognised?
