Re: [LegacyUG] restoring a back up
Sherry, I joined the 2 Legacy lists and clicked on the confirmation and again nothing has happened...no messages coming through...this happened the last time I joined... Sherry, I'm helping someone download Legacy Deluxe from the Internet shortly and I needed to know if there was anything "tricky" that I would encounter, or options that would mean I need to make decisions and wouldn't know what to door is it pretty straightforward? Restoring your Legacy file is just half of the job. You need to restore the multimedia as a separate step. In this case, you need to "upzip" the multimedia file. Someone correct me if I am mistaken. RE: [LegacyUG] restoring a back up
That doesn't make much sense. What would be the point of backing up your multimedia files if it only contains a link to where they are located? I would assume the data backup for Legacy does that already. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the backup retains the same folder names that it backed up from, or does it just dump all of the media files into one folder. I've never tried it with Legacy, but FTM restores all images to the same folder which I always hated since I keep my images organized by category or person's surname. That's why I always back up my original uncompressed media folders frequently and a Legacy media backup after linking a bunch of images then delete the older ones. Re: [LegacyUG] restoring a back up
On our website at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Help Center > Tips, under Backing Up and Restoring Famiily Files, you'll find an explanation of how to extract the multimedia backup. The multimedia backup contains all sounds, pictures, videos and documents which you have linked to in Legacy. It does not contain any other multimedia files. When you extract the files on a new computer, unless you had them originally stored in the c:\Legacy sub-folders for each file type, you will need to relink them - however Legacy does this quckly for you. When you go into a Picture Gallery and see the "question mark" icon, just click on one of them and in the Find File window, select to let Legacy search for the file. That *should* re-link most all of the multimedia files. You may have to browse for a file yourself, esp if there's been an name change in the file itself. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but the backup of the photographs is only the link to where the photographs are - not the actual media files themselves - so if you are back up to another computer unless those media files are on the other computer, in exactly the same directory listing as your original computer, then you will not find the photos. RE: [LegacyUG] restoring a back up
I know from experience that if your photographs are not linked to anyone in your Legacy file, they won't be backed up. I have a lot of images that I keep in various subfolders beneath a main folder and when I do a backup, it skips the ones that are not linked to anyone.
