I use microsoft syncToy (Free) to synchronise to a backup drive from my Laptop and my wife also uses an identical syncToy process using the same backup folders and files. This effectively keeps both Laptop PC in synch. Caviat: Need to be very carefull when you both want to modify the same file as whoever updated last gets their changes made. Peggy, Good Luck, I am entirely happy with the way I use Dropbox but your last post does prompt a warning: if you have the same *fdb file open on two machines, do not amend either, otherwise Dropbox will get confused - this is not a Dropbox problem, simply the way that Access works. [LegacyUG] syncing files
I have been using a sync program to sync all files from my working drive to my backup drives. Since I use one drive and copy to only backup drives it's worked well. But now I have a laptop and will be working on legacy while traveling and it doesn't seems as though my chronosync program will save both the older file and the newer one that is different. I can't find a way to do that. I haven't yet delved into drop box. What happens with files of the same name and different contents? Is there a sync program that will save a copy the way a program like Adobe Bridge or even microsoft explorer, I think, will save both files, adding a (1) to the second copy. Hoping you can help me figure out how to do this! Peggy, If you use Dropbox and have files with the same name on both machines then the latest will be used by both machines. If you really wish to keep them separate, one thing which you may like to consider is only having your Legacy generated back ups in Dropbox. These will, of course be unique because they contain the date and time in their file name. If, however, you wished to be more specific then there is no reason for not putting, say, #1 before the PC file name and #2 before that of the laptop. You will, of course have to use Restore to put them into Legacy, and save with the appropriate. *.fdb file name, overwriting the old version. Since I will be traveling and working on a few documents that will be both in my laptop and desktop at home, it should work out ok because I can just replace the older. But today I ended up somehow working on a doc and having part of one with new notes and part on the laptop with other new notes. I renamed the laptop file by adding a 2 and consolidated. I guess that's what I meant rather than syncing: consolidating. Probably not possible to do except manually. Will just have to be careful to work on docs in only one pc. There has to be an easier way than what you're doing. If it's only one file that's being changed you can remember it, but if it's more you're going to get confused, pretty much guaranteed. If you're using Syncback then you know you can set up backup or sync profiles. All you need in the middle is an external HD to go from one to the other. What NOT to do is work on your desktop and then your laptop without syncing the files before you change computers. Another way to go at this is using SugarSync, free 5GB. (http://www.jgen.ws/sugarsync.php [referral link]) You do have to wait for the files to sync between computers before you switch computers. A bit off topic but it's a direction to try. Dropbox saves versions going back 30 days but I haven't used it the way you're suggesting so I don't know for sure. I'm wondering why you want different versions.
