Re: [LegacyUG] Dictionaries V7 - V8

2013-12-06 Thread John B. Lisle

Jay,
I have to correct you on this answer.
The files in C:\Program Files x86\Legacy8\ are only for installing
Legacy. A lot of the files are kept there only to give users a source to
get a backup copy in the case that the running copy gets damaged or more
importantly, to restore a default copy of some settings files.
The files in [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree are what are installed on
your PC for the running of the program. All of the sub-folders there hold
the files that are for the various GLOBAL settings during the running of
Legacy.* *See below for exceptions.
The Family File Specific settings are in two places:
(1) [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\Data\
--> This is the default location for your Family Files and the Family
File specific settings are embedded in the each Family File.
--> This and its associated \Media\ are what folks often move to a
separate family files folder.
(2) [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_App_Data\Usr\Profile.dbm
--> This is file is a global file that holds the user's default
customization settings, including the USER's default settings for all of
the User's Global (gbl) and Family File (FF) specific settings.
The key concepts are:
Program Files - Install
[My Documents] Global Settings
Family File - Each family file's specific customizations
settings.
ok?

Dictionaries are Global, meaning that the same dictionary will be

Group,

Are dictionaries from V7 [default folder] compatible with V8 and if
so can they be copied across to C:\Program Files
(x86)\Legacy8\Dictionaries?

Our L7 dictionaries contain numerous “Changeâ†and “Addâ€
resulting ting from spell checking many thousands of events.

Group,

My original question has been answered. Prior to copy/paste V7 userdic-au.tlx
file from C:\Legacy\Dictionaries to C:\Users\XXX\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\Dictionaries, (XXX being computer name) plan to open in text
editor and verify entries. Am sure that over the years there have been a
couple of entries sneak through which were in fact incorrect.

Further to Jay’s previous post, review of C:\Program Files
(x86)\Legacy8\_AppData\Dictionaries indicates no files included.

No, not off hand. I was going to say that there's a way that you could do the
necessary investigation and let the rest of us know. Take a TLX file for a
language other than English from both versions and use a file utility program to
do a byte-comparison.

Unfortunately, I don't see that any dictionary other than English has been
installed in Legacy 8.
