Thank you, Brian. Please ask the programmers to ensure that the output on Legacy's web pages is also corrected. Sometimes old *is* best! Re: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
There may be children who have died and you do not necessarily find out about this. One of the families I've looked at recently had children 1698, 1700, 1707, 1709. My guess is that there were probably 2 or 3 children between 1700 & 1707. Either they were baptised elsewhere, or they died. A will may partially sort this out, but often, one never finds out the truth.. RE: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
David, Referencing your question, firstly through an exhaustive research "some married couples are known to have had no children" and should be documented as such. Secondly and probably more important, making assumptions prior to an exhaustive and documented research can lead one into mythology and pure fantasy. Following an exhaustive research one can make a hypothesis based upon available evidence up to that point, however, newly uncovered evidence can either prove or disprove that hypothesis. Re: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
Olwyn, You must be using the Descendant Chart report since the charts are the only ones which use unknown for a missing spouse. In narrative reports there is a marriage wording setting which uses "someone" as the default for a missing spouse. There is no way to turn off the use of Unknown on those chart reports. The leave it blank option that others have mentioned apply only to the screen display. There is also no way to add the sentence "Had no children" in the charts either, again that wording is used in the narrative/book style reports. You are so right Mary. I am not certain when it happened, I am pretty sure it was either at the time of the release of V7 or following an update shortly after. As Brian has previously acknowledged it has been on the list of bugs since then. Why, oh why nothing has been done about it I can't imagine. If it wasn't for the fact that I really like the Pedigree web format I would try some else. Re: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
Chick, Unfortunately, not entirely. Most, if not all 'unknowns' are generated (if one chooses to put in 'unknown' then that is one which I consider one would wish to print) by Legacy, if a dot is inserted into an empty field then it will show up instead of 'unknown', I haven't tried a space, but I am not sure whether it would work or not. I do use the dot technique to ensure that a field is created for use in Legacy Tree draw which does not create empty fields. The problem arises in that pretty well all the Legacy created unknowns are instead of spouse names, and in web pages, and at least some reports if a spouse's parent is not known (but one is) a line is inserted which says something like: "John married Amy the daughter of Alan Roberts and unknown", or "John married Amy the daughter of unknown and Ann Roberts". As you see a dot will not look good! Anyhow, we should not have this problem, we did not used to have it and it came in with one of the updates. Clearly the programmers do not consider it to be important. Olwyn, For the ‘Had No Children’, go to the report options and under Include, tick the ‘Child Status’. For the word Unknown, go to Options> Customize > Data Format > and look to the lower right hand side of the screen. Try ticking the box for “Word for Blank” Records to ‘Leave Blank’ and see if that gives you what you’re looking for in your descendant report.
