Thank you, Brian. Please ask the programmers to ensure that the output on
Legacy's web pages is also corrected. Sometimes old *is* best!

After reading all the comments on this thread I went back and tried the
Descendant Chart report in Legacy 4.0, 5,0 and 6.0. In those versions if
the option to just leave it blank for missing spouses was selected the
chart did not use the word "unknown" for a missing spouse. I have
therefore entered a problem report to have the "unknown" on chart match
the setting in the Options > Customize > Data Format tab.

Couldn't they use those little symbols they show in the children list on the
family view?  Just print that next to the box in the chart?  Just
a doesn't-use-much-space suggestion.

In response to David.  No issue gives closure to that line.  As Brian mentions
anyone else following on from me will see this without the need to investigate.
When sharing information with family I print the descendants Report and at this
point no one has my soft copy.  With  the exception of 1 instance I never select
"this couple had no children" unless I am sure this is the case.  I only
recently discovered a gg uncle where the death certificate listed children as
nil when  in reality he had 1 child (complicated story), so there is a chance of
a mistaken entry.  Assumptions are not for me, I am the type of person who dots
all the 'i's and crosses all the 'T's and having this little bit of information
is just something I would like to see. Legacy is working as designed and with
this knowledge I will create a work around for myself.

Sounds like this needs to be added to the next version “Wishlist”.

Thanks,

"This couple are known to have had no children" is a very different
thing to "If this couple had any children I don't know about it yet, but
they might well have done."

According to the bug report the error first occurred in Legacy
7.0.0.110, a Beta build issued to the testers, on 25 Sep 2009. The
problem report was entered in out tracking system on 30 Sep 2009.

For users on this list the first appearance would have been with the
issue of Legacy 7.4 on 29 Jan 2010.

It is useful if you "know for certain" that a couple had no children, to
record that so you do not waste research time looking for children for
the couple. Like you though I do not feel it is something that should be
included in a chart style report. Legacy does report if the "This couple

There may be children who have died and you do not necessarily find out
about this. One of the families I've looked at recently had children
1698, 1700, 1707, 1709. My guess is that there were probably 2 or 3
children between 1700 & 1707. Either they were baptised elsewhere, or
they died. A will may partially sort this out, but often, one never
finds out the truth..

David,

Referencing your question, firstly through an exhaustive research "some married
couples are known to have had no children" and should be documented as such.
Secondly and probably more important, making assumptions prior to an exhaustive
and documented research can lead one into mythology and pure fantasy. Following
an exhaustive research one can make a hypothesis based upon available evidence
up to that point, however, newly uncovered evidence can either prove or
disprove that hypothesis.

This may be a dumb question, BUT, why is this "No issue" such a needed entry?
If there are NO children listed in a database, I assume that there are NO
children for this union.

"This couple are known to have had no children" is a very different
thing to "If this couple had any children I don't know about it yet, but
they might well have done."

If there are NO children listed in a database, I assume that there are NO

2011-10-18 Thread Brian/Support
Olwyn,

You must be using the Descendant Chart report since the charts are the
only ones which use unknown for a missing spouse. In narrative reports
there is a marriage wording setting which uses "someone" as the default
for a missing spouse. There is no way to turn off the use of Unknown on
those chart reports. The leave it blank option that others have
mentioned apply only to the screen display.

There is also no way to add the sentence "Had no children" in the charts
either, again that wording is used in the narrative/book style reports.

You are so right Mary. I am not certain when it happened, I am pretty sure
it was either at the time of the release of V7 or following an update
shortly after. As Brian has previously acknowledged it has been on the list
of bugs since then.
Why, oh why nothing has been done about it I can't imagine. If it wasn't for
the fact that I really like the Pedigree web format I would try some else.

Olwyn,

I do apologize for the misinformation. I always add (_) for any
unknown names so I'd not noticed the 'Leave Blank' was no longer working!
Yikes, Ron, this needs to be corrected. Few things are more exasperating
than having a format option that doesn't work as expected.

Olwyn,

I really do wish that I shared your confidence that the printing of
‘unknown’
would be corrected. The bur, and that is what it is, arose very shortly
after version 7 was released and nothing has been done about it to date.

The only work-around is to use a word processor and delete all instances of
“ and unknown”, “ unknown and“ (note the space at the start of both and
then
“unknown”. A total pain in the neck!

My personal thanks to Mary and Ron. I think my install maybe a problem.
The "leave blank" option is checked and I don't have access to the child
status tab (greyed out). I do have the deluxe version but may have
installed it badly. I have as suggested "reported a problem". I am
confident I will have both these options working soon.

Again my thanks for taking the time to help.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown

2011-10-15 Thread Ron Ferguson
Chick,

Unfortunately, not entirely. Most, if not all 'unknowns' are generated (if
one chooses to put in 'unknown' then that is one which I consider one would
wish to print) by Legacy, if a dot is inserted into an empty field then it
will show up instead of 'unknown', I haven't tried a space, but I am not
sure whether it would work or not. I do use the dot technique to ensure that
a field is created for use in Legacy Tree draw which does not create empty
fields.

The problem arises in that pretty well all the Legacy created unknowns are
instead of spouse names, and in web pages, and at least some reports if a
spouse's parent is not known (but one is) a line is inserted which says
something like: "John married Amy the daughter of Alan Roberts and unknown",
or "John married Amy the daughter of unknown and Ann Roberts".

As you see a dot will not look good!

Anyhow, we should not have this problem, we did not used to have it and it
came in with one of the updates. Clearly the programmers do not consider it
to be important.

RE: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown

2011-10-14 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Olwyn,

For the ‘Had No Children’, go to the report options and under Include, tick the
‘Child Status’.

For the word Unknown, go to Options> Customize > Data Format > and look to the
lower right hand side of the screen. Try ticking the box for “Word for Blank”
Records to ‘Leave Blank’ and see if that gives you what you’re looking for in
your descendant report.

Hello
When I print the descendant's report I would like to include a line to indicate
the couple had no children. Just the same as in the screen reference "Had no
children". Is it possible? Also I would like to exclude the word "Unknown" for
printing when I do not have the father's name in the report. I'm would rather
a blank space or another description e.g +..My older sister's
father is "unknown" (my mother won't tell and refuses to discuss ) I just
don't feel comfortable when I show my sister the tree and this word is there.
If there is an "in place" solution would appreciate a heads up.
Thank you in advance
Olwyn

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown

2011-10-14 Thread Ron Ferguson
Olwyn,

Re your printing of ‘Unknown’, firstly please go to Options>Customise>Data
Format and on the bottom right there is a box where you can select just to
leave blank. Please select this and do your report again. If the ‘unknown’
still appears I would be grateful if you would report it as a bug.

It is the same for Pedigree web pages and over the years I have asked for it to
be corrected – maybe you will more luck!
