So far as I am aware, the program does not get upgraded automatically. When
there is a new update, you are notified of the fact and it is up to you whether
the update is downloaded and applied or not.

Having said that, if toy turn to the Legacy Home tab you will a button in the
top right-hand corner labelled 'Options'. Click it and select Options from the
context menu that pop up. Now, select the Internet Options tab and select the
lower of the two radio buttons to stop Legacy from checking for updates.

Note that this will totally cut Legacy off from the world!

Re: [LegacyUG] How to prevent Legacy updates?

2014-03-17 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Alexa,

I'm not sure what you are doing, but Legacy doesn't automatically
update. You have to choose to update.

Also there has been no automatic upgrade to version 8 or a conversion
in 7 that forces you to upgrade to 8.
Perhaps you loaded an earlier version of Legacy 7 and when you tried
to open a file, misread the message saying the file couldn't be
opened in it to mean that it could now only be opened in Legacy 8. It
was meaning that it needed a later version of Legacy 7.

You can still download Legacy 7.5 from the Legacy Webpages ( and you
can still download even earlier versions).
You just have to take a breath and read the download page and notice
that on the Right there is a link to earlier versions.
Here is the direct link:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion7.asp

However, after a short while I think you'll come to like Legacy 8.
But let me address some of your other issues and how you can go back
if you want to.

There haven't been many changes to the ribbons since Legacy 8 was
released. The only one I'm aware of is that Research Guidance has
moved from a tab onto the Tools Ribbon.

Perhaps you have discovered accidently that you can have the Ribbon
minimised or maximised. Or perhaps you have moved from the My Toolbar
Ribbon which is like the Toolbar in 7.5 to one of the other Ribbons
which have taken the place of the Menus in 7.5 (think of a Ribbon as
a visual menu that is horizontal rather than vertical) and not
realised that there are a number of different Ribbons in Legacy 8.

Now that you have opened your file in Legacy 8, unless you still have
an older copy or a backup you can only get back to Legacy 7.5 by
using a Gedcom. However, if you still have that copy on your external
hard drive you can install the latest version of 7.5 and open it.

Note you can have Legacy 7.5 and Legacy 8 on your computer at the
same time. This is easiest if you use the defaults for both. They
install in quite different places.
Legacy 7.5 installs to C:\Legacy unless you choose another drive or folder.
Legacy 8 installs to C:\Program Files\ and should not be installed
anywhere else though you can choose to install it elsewhere.
Regardless of where you install Legacy 8, the User settings will be
at ...\yourusername\(My)Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData and
this folder cannot be moved elsewhere.

It's best to keep Legacy 7 and Legacy 8 Data Files in different folders.

Legacy 7.5 is no longer being updated so you are stuck with the bugs
in it. There are no more bugs in Legacy 8 than there are still in
Legacy 7 though because they're different you may come across different ones.

that I had stored on an external hard drive because even though I
have the program disk for Legacy 7.5, the updates/upgrades are no
longer available online, and the file was no longer compatible with Legacy 7.5.

I had to buy Legacy 8 to read my file. Now the darn thing is already
updating/upgrading without my permission and has made dramatic
changes to the program.

Please Help!!!

RE: [LegacyUG] How to prevent Legacy updates?

2014-03-17 Thread Michele/Support
Alexa,

The program does not automatically update. The only way it will update is if
you tell it to. There are two ways to update. You can go to the Legacy Home
tab and over on the right you will see if there is an update available. You
can then click on the update if you want to install it. Or, you can update on
our website.

Neither Legacy 7.5 nor Legacy 8.0 does automatic updates.
